I would say a good month of eating twice a day (pasta, rice dishes) - ie no thrills just sustenance

OP posts:
Egghead68 · 16/03/2020 13:41

4 weeks but I would run out of fresh fruit and veg in about a week.

APurpleSquirrel · 16/03/2020 13:41

2-3 weeks, but that would empty cupboards, fridge and freezer.

Egghead68 · 16/03/2020 13:41

It would be just beans and pasta for the last two.

WhoEatsPopTarts · 16/03/2020 13:41

4 days, max

1981m · 16/03/2020 13:42

I think it's really selfish people who have months worth of supplies stored away, especially rice and pasta and hand sanitizer when others can't get hold of any. I have genuinely run out of bread, pasta, hand sanitizer, toilet roll and can't get any more because of these people.

I went to the shops Friday and it was mayhem with so many shelves stripped bare. And note people are coming on here to brag about their supplies.

GameSetMatch · 16/03/2020 13:43

Five days maybe, definitely no more than that.

SparklingGin · 16/03/2020 13:43

A month but after two weeks it would be very boring

StrongTea · 16/03/2020 13:43

About 3 weeks from freezer and cupboards. Have got a few chickens though so have fresh eggs daily.

ShouldIStaySelfIsolated · 16/03/2020 13:46

2 weeks tops Blush

Lynda07 · 16/03/2020 13:47

I've no idea, a couple of months I suppose.

longearedbat · 16/03/2020 13:47

Probably about 3 weeks. Actually it would be good to get to the back of the cupboards - perhaps I'll even use up the pilchards, anchovies and prunes that have been languishing in their tins for ages.
As an aside, re the panic buying (which I have only seen on TV etc, not in reality), surely once people who hoard have stuffed their cupboards to the gills, they will not be buying more for ages? I mean, you wouldn't panic buy every week, would you? I would think the situation will normalise once the supermarkets have re-stocked. I would hope these greedy people look at all their food and wonder what they are going to do with it. There's only so much pasta and rice one wants to eat (unless you're starving of course).

StylishMummy · 16/03/2020 13:47

3 months, family of four

I'm a general prepper, we have 3 months of full supplies and I've been sure to practice making bread, pastry and other staples so we can maintain a varied diet.

By the time the 3 months is up, my tomatoes, potatoes and courgettes will be ready to pick from the garden.

millerjane · 16/03/2020 13:49

I went to the Asian supermarket yesterday and bought a huge bag of rice and flour plus a few bags of mixed lentils and stock.

Not my intention to bost/make people feel bad.

Soooo selfish, can't believe some people on here who have months worth of things.

You have panic brought and stick piled at the expense of others.

MmeAlice · 16/03/2020 13:50

3-4 weeks. I have been overbuying for four weeks now (NOT panic buying and certainly not depriving others. I sat out the end of last week when everyone went in a panic - we live in Denmark and only ventured to the shops this morning after it had all calmed down). We have two freezers and these are fully stocked. Lots of tins and dried goods. Always buy rice in large quantities from the Asian shop.

KarenTookTheKids · 16/03/2020 13:51

We have enough to last us 2 weeks, if we scrape round the backs of the cupboards and freezer. I couldn't bear to have anymore than that cluttering up the place, I detest clutter!

1981m · 16/03/2020 13:55

If course you are depriving others, you have said yourself you have over brought. If there is now not enough for others you have deprived others. You can say you haven't panic brought but you most certainly have. You wouldn't not have brought that much usually so you have panic brought.

I felt so sad for the elderly people I saw today trying to buy there essentials and there's no bread etc. I was fortunate and got the last of a few loaves of bread, pasta, lemsip and spaghetti but I would have given them it if they had asked for it even though we have none.

KarenTookTheKids · 16/03/2020 13:56

19, that isn't really fair. The posters who have months and months worth of stuff generally are the sort who describe themselves as preppers. Whilst I am not a fan of the concept, they did not cause the shortages as they have been overbuying for months/years.

Roselilly36 · 16/03/2020 13:59

Family of 4, two weeks at a guess

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 16/03/2020 13:59

We bought a 10kg bag of rice a month ago when it was reduced in Tesco. We normally bulk buy eg Costco. This was before the madness set in.
We could last a month to 6 weeks but it would probably involve a lot of lentils by the end.
I make soap as a hobby and so we haven’t bought any soap recently.

1981m · 16/03/2020 14:00

Karen- I am not convinced that they always have months worth of food stored away. They may have prepped but it is at the expense of those who haven't or can't. That can't be denied otherwise there wouldn't be any empty shelves and Eve humid would be able to get what they need which isn't the case.

Ok, fair enough a couple of weeks if you have to self isolate but a months worth or more is selfish imo

AutumnCrow · 16/03/2020 14:00

I already have a lot of things I bought leading up to brexit, in case it was a 'hard brexit'. I could last on my own for months if I'm required to quarantine.

Which is looking likely.

That's just being practical and not placing a burden on others, isn't it?

PhantomErik · 16/03/2020 14:00

I would think about a month, maybe a bit more but not of everything. We'd be on frozen fruit & veg by week 2 & tinned by week 3.

I like being fully stocked up & started a long time ago (years) so actually I've not needed to buy any pasta or loo rolls since all this panic buying started making it easier for everyone else.

We've had some very lean times financially in the past so I bulk buy when we can afford it. Works out cheaper in the long run anyway.

1981m · 16/03/2020 14:00

Everyone that should read.

PieceOfMaria · 16/03/2020 14:00

Probably about 3 weeks, provided we didn’t mind living on subsistence rations of wheat based foods like bread, and grain and pulse based foods like dhal, porridge and split pea soup. I’ll run out of fresh veg and onions within about four days and freezer veg and meat within about ten days.
