Is this a cull?

As a vulnerable person I feel that the government are saying that they want to protect us, but are doing absolutely nothing. We are not allowed to self isolate unless we have symptoms, we are expected to go to work amongst people who have no idea whether they are infected because nobody is being tested. By the time they decide we should self isolate many of us will already be infected.

Its crossed my mind more than once. This heartless govt with clear contempt for the vulnerable would be saving a bomb if they allow the deaths of many (in their view) expensive drains on resources.
I have been worried sick for the already marginalised and struggling. I can't see this reflected in the government's concern or actions. Its understandable, given their past contempt that people would worry about this.

PhoneLock · 16/03/2020 08:43

Not allowed to self isolate? Who says?

Reginabambina · 16/03/2020 08:45

I doubt it. It seems more like they are attempting to prevent a situation like the one in Italy where care is denied on the basis of age/underlying conditions. The government has also said that they want the elderly to isolate (for months on end). I think you’re just being a bit paranoid here.

MoltonSilver · 16/03/2020 08:46

It feels like it, yes.

WrongKindOfFace · 16/03/2020 08:47

Pensions are the biggest part of the benefits bill. However the older population are much more likely to be Tory voters. Even Bojo wouldn’t be daft enough to wipe them all out.

OhCaptain · 16/03/2020 08:47

When you look at what the UK are doing compared to everyone else, it sure looks like one.

Our Tánaiste Simon Coveney said last week that we must do our part to protect the elderly and the sick, because they are precious.

Looks like BoJo et al are saying the exact opposite, banging on about scientific advice as if the WHO aren’t practically begging them to do better.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/03/2020 08:50

No, because the elderly vote conservative, if nothing else.

Can we please stop this scaremongering?

MorrisZapp · 16/03/2020 08:50

And yet when asking retired people to self isolate is mooted, the only response is no that won't work because its not fair to the elderly?

I can't bear conspiracy theory, but even the evil BJ wouldn't try to cull taxpayers. Asking older people to stay at home is the opposite of a cull.

MoltonSilver · 16/03/2020 08:53

I don't think people mean that it's literally an intentional cull (or do they?) but it may be what it amounts to in the end.

halcyondays · 16/03/2020 08:53

It’s only over seventies to isolate. Not one word has been said about anyone younger with underlying conditions. No official advice given that children with underlying conditions should be taken our of school.
No wonder special schools in Belfast have decided to close themselves.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/03/2020 08:54

If it does it will be because it’s what the virus does, it’s worse in the elderly and there’s only so much you can do about it.

ThunderboltandLightning · 16/03/2020 09:01

From a recent Torygraph article. There are people who believe this is a way to solve the social care problem...

Is this a cull?
HonestlyItsFine · 16/03/2020 09:03

No, for one simple reason:
The Tories want to be reelected.
Killing off their voter base and pissing off the rest of the country would not achieve that.
I do think they are out of their depth. Everybody is.
I think today things will start to close. I hope. People will not social distance theirselves, it needs to be forced.

MummyPop00 · 16/03/2020 09:08

Objectively speaking, the whole planet probably needs a cull. 2.5 extra people every single second?

12 billion on the medium horizon according to the UN? Not ideal letting ourselves proliferate like this is it? Whoo yeah stop all disease, keeping people alive until they reach 100 - high fives all round, well done us etc

But no, I don’t think this has been planned. Doesn’t mean they won’t try it in future though. Depends how desperate things may get.

Counterpane · 16/03/2020 09:13

I have thought this for weeks. The older Tory voters have served their purpose and given them an 80 seat majority for the next four and a half years so there is no further need for them.

The fact that Ian Duncan Smith was handed a knighthood tells you all you need to know about the level of concern the Government has towards the vulnerable.

OnABeachSomewhere · 16/03/2020 09:28

No. It's an epidemic, which does happen now and again. It's nature, unfortunately.

teacherspet · 16/03/2020 09:30

To be honest, I wasn't talking about the elderly in this case. As a pp said, there is no advise for the vulnerable to self isolate, obviously if they wish to. My work have said that unless you have been advised to self isolate you must come in. This means I am expected to be amongst people who could well be infectious and not even know it. The vulnerable are definitely not being looked after. This is not scaremongering, this is the actual situation as it affects me and many others.

OP posts:
Notredamn · 16/03/2020 09:36

You're right. Keeping children off school amounts to unauthorised absence and parents can't afford to pay the fines so people who would otherwise self isolate, aren't going to.

alloutoffucks · 16/03/2020 09:50

Isn't one of the Government advisers a fan of eugenics?

Kelsoooo · 16/03/2020 09:53

My kids school has said if a child has underlying health issues, or a member of their direct family does and they self isolate prior to symptoms or recommendations, then they'll be assigned a code upon calling in and it won't affect their absence levels.

So I'm gonna say, you're scaremongering.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/03/2020 09:54

Isn't one of the Government advisers a fan of eugenics?

Who is that?

Ohfrigginghellers · 16/03/2020 09:57

I work in a school and they have asked us to self declare if we are pregnant or have underlying health conditions as a protective measure.

SummersMahoosiveClipOnFringe · 16/03/2020 09:57

No it is not- it is people trying to do their best given the information they have and the limitations around the Health Service.

If you want to self-isolate- crack on. Get GP letter of support re work or work from home.

The use of 'cull' is nasty and unnecessary.

Popuppippa · 16/03/2020 10:01

Please stop the ridiculous scaremongering. It is a global pandemic, not something cooked up by politicians.

Oh, and self-isolation - the clue is in the name!

Lordamighty · 16/03/2020 10:02

STOP SCAREMONGERING- there are many people on this forum with underlying health conditions and/or mental health problems & this rampant scaremongering is disgusting.
Have at least some consideration for others before posting this rubbish, PLEASE.
