If you have asthma are you reducing social contact?
Queenfreak · 15/03/2020 21:48
Just that really. I'm currently staying home because I have pneumonia (NOT C19 related). I've felt so awful, so now concerned about the impact C19 could have on me. However I've also got a toddler (not yet in nursery) and due to her being Ill recently and me being very poorly we haven't really been out socially for a month now. Poor child is climbing the walls!
I dont know what to do for the best.
katy91 · 15/03/2020 21:50
If I were you I would look long-term at keeping your family safe and do whatever is required. Take into account this could go on for months.
I have asthma and self-isolating (I am currently able to work from home).
LolaSmiles · 15/03/2020 21:51
I have made changes to my daily life such as DH doing the weekly shop, avoiding playgroups, calling the doctors to get my prescriptions sent directly to the pharmacy.
I'm still going to the park, walking the dog, seeing individual friends and so on.
OkMaybeNot · 15/03/2020 21:53
Yep. Had pneumonia once, and I felt like I was going to die.
I do not want this disease.
covetingthepreciousthings · 15/03/2020 21:53
I wish I could, but work in retail so have to face the general public every day regardless until anything changes. I am worried for my health though, and will try reduce contact on days off but it's probably pointless.
AutumnRose1 · 15/03/2020 21:54
And you ha e asthma as well?
I’m sorry but I can only speak from my experience. Asthmatic and recovery from pneumonia was very long for me.
I have reduced my social hugging (!) but will still be hugging mum and best mate. In terms of going out, I have to use the Tube. I’m an obsessive handwasher already.
Really I think the big factor here is that you’re recovering from pneumonia so I think you need to be a bit careful but I’d say avoid crowds and that’s about it.
My cousin is severely immunocompromised - he’s not in London so no tube issues - but going to see friends for meals etc. His specialist advised him against a concert but I suspect that will be cancelled anyway.
I hope you recover asap
Queenfreak · 15/03/2020 21:55
Thanks.
I was thinking of avoiding groups, but still going to NT places, park, even library (it's very clean and we are rural so quiet). Maybe seeing friends here for a play.
Thanks
thepeopleversuswork · 15/03/2020 21:56
My DD has asthma and I am taking her out of school and wfh. Have had individual friends pop over. Can’t completely eliminate social contact but am limiting it as far as possible.
Not because I am especially concerned about covid 19 per se but because I don’t want her to have to go to hospital right now. And because it’s quite plain to me that the government guidance is a huge mistake and is allowing the virus to circulate unchecked which will put other vulnerable people at risk. I expect there to be a u turn within days. I am very lucky that I can wfh.

I've had a flare up of my asthma and am on steroids and antibiotics (prophylactic). I'm tight chested and needing my reliever inhaler every few hours, been in a and e and at gp this week and waiting dor call from asthma nurse tomorow. I had atypical pneumonia in october and needed lots of steroids and antibiotics so am trying to be proactive in looking after my chest now. Silly timing for it really.
I did a quick shop yesterday and have seen both sides of our family over the weekend (low impact). Ds is nearly 2 and is a snot factory so I expect that I've got some virus from him (no cough or fever). I feel a bit better today than yesterday but am staying off work to rest up. Am a bit worried about what happens if I get CV but ds goes to nursery and I simply cant self isolate from him (hes too kissable).
InflagranteDelicto · 15/03/2020 22:17
I am at home. But that's not difficult because I'm quite antisocial. Everyone is being reminded constantly to wash to their hands, cover their mouth and so on.
I can't avoid work though- I work in a pharmacy, so all I can do is hand wash religiously and minimise opportunity for the general public to cough and splutter all over me (which they do, as a mass group the general public are gross)
I'm working on keeping my lungs as healthy as possible. I already use a pretty strong preventer with the option to increase my dose if needed. Otherwise all I can do is pray, because I've got 3 DC that use public transport to get to school.
Peasfox · 15/03/2020 22:22
I am worried about how it will affect my asthma. It takes me months to get over a cold that my husband has bounced back from in a matter of days.
There isn’t too much guidance out there from either the government or Asthma UK about how it affects asthmatics and no instruction to self isolate so I’m not for the time being. If that guidance changes I will listen.
Fidgety31 · 15/03/2020 22:40
I have asthma and got home today from Walt Disney world in Florida
So many germs out there so I probably have picked it up
I have a sore throat but no cough yet
GruffalosOldTrousers · 15/03/2020 22:40
I'm currently on second dose of steroids as my asthma is flaring up so staying off work for the next couple of days at least.
I can't make a decision about sending my kids to school. I don't want them bringing germs back until I'm healthy enough to face it at least. DH also can't work from home.
It's so hard to know what to do. The official advice isn't very helpful but my GP suggested staying away from large groups of people.
Queenfreak · 15/03/2020 22:44
Thanks everyone. Obviously I'm on antibiotics and pred (I'm not sure I'll ever sleep again!), plus ventolin and max dosage of symbicort.
I'm not going anywhere this week, but if we arent on lockdown I think places outside will be ok for the time being.
CrocodilesCry · 15/03/2020 22:50
It's really scary isn't it?
I have allergic asthma which isn't well controlled - I'm not talking regular hospital admissions but I do wheeze often as I'm allergic to lots of airborne stuff, and if I get a cold it goes to my chest. I've been on a nebuliser a few times and had pleurisy twice.
Part of me hopes I get it now while the NHS might even vaguely be able to cope if I needed to be admitted.
But I'm going into work tomorrow as my job is important in terms of getting information to other people - depending on how things progress I may be working from home more.
DevastatedandDistraught · 15/03/2020 22:51
Probably shouldn’t say this but I lost my child neatly a year ago. I am 49. I have asthma and have had pneumonia twice. I hope, wish and pray that Coronoavirus is my get out of jail free card. Sorry. Probably not the best place to post this but I am alone and very sad and wishing I wasn’t here.
I hope everyone else is safe.
FrangipaniBlue · 15/03/2020 22:52
I was planning to, however pretty much had it forced on me as it's looking very very likely that DS has Coronavirus, symptoms started Friday.
I'm resigned to the fact I'm probably going to start showing symptoms in the next week.
I was ok with it until DS got a bit upset tonight because he's worried about me and if I get it will I have to go into hospital.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bit scared, especially since I've had pneumonia before so know how bad things can get
AfterSchoolWorry · 15/03/2020 22:54
Yeah, I am. I've had pneumonia a few times and pleurisy. I'm also middle aged. So I'm prime cannon fodder.
GruffalosOldTrousers · 15/03/2020 23:02
@DevastatedandDistraught, I'm so sorry. My thoughts are with you.
GruffalosOldTrousers · 15/03/2020 23:05
@FrangipaniBlue I hope your DS recovers quickly and ideally that you don't get it, but if you do that it's not as bad as you fear.
Look after yourself.
Bagelsandbrie · 15/03/2020 23:07
I’m staying home and not seeing anyone - I will have to pop to the pharmacy and supermarket unfortunately but plan to do this at the quietest times to limit social interaction as much as I can. I am not seeing friends or going anywhere else. I have asthma and autoimmune conditions. I want to try and avoid getting it as long as I can.
SquashedFlyBiscuit · 15/03/2020 23:15
Im ry not aure what to do. Waiting dr this week but asthma nurse not available for 2 more weeks.
Youngest gets asthma too. Do i keep us all home? I wish we'd been told to officially.
marmitebear · 15/03/2020 23:19
@DevastatedandDistraught I am so sorry you are going through so much pain. I
