AIBU to think panic buyers are not only selfish but also stupid

First of all, if you buy out all the soap and sanitiser so there's no left for anyone else, you're not really that safe. Because everyone else is walking around spreading germs anyway.

But also, don't panic buy. Shops won't close instantly. Once the government tells everyone the world is on lockdown, then panic buy, but for now just stop being an idiot.

Educate yourself, wash your hands. Tired of seeing people buying PPE for builders/decorators and using it as a sanitary mask (not medically approved). Or wearing masks that don't cover their nose, just mouth. Also wash your hands after using the toilet anyway.

What's really scary is that if there was a real threat to humanity we'd kill each other with our stupidity and selfish greed quicker than the actual problem would.

It's sad that shops are having to email people to be sensible. Hopefully the limiting works though no doubt ways around it

Instead of buying loads of pasta, buy flour, vegetable oil and a rolling pin. Roll the dough as thin as possible and cut with a knife and voila tagliatelle Smile.

No wonder we had rationing in the last war. If we hadn’t many of the people on this thread would have let the poor and vulnerable starve to death.

It seems the attitudes haven’t changed one bit.

I witnessed some man buying 20+ bottles of disinfectant- he asked me what I thought of it all and I said the country has gone crazy and asked did he really have a big enough house to need all of them. He replied that he lived in a caravan.... so no, he doesn't need 20+bottles.

There is nothing wrong with doing a good shop and making sure you have enough in. However many must be buying much more for shelves to be empty of so much.

MaidenMotherCrone · 15/03/2020 22:52

The clue is in the word 'Panic'. People tend not to think rationally when they panic.

I haven't bought anything extra because I'm not panicking and I am one of those that have shut themselves away.

I'm protecting myself and in turn protecting others.

Don't call people stupid or idiots just because they've reacted differently to you. It's really not nice.

Can I ask you all to spare a thought for people with food allergies and a restricted diet? DS, 9, has several life threatening allergies. So judge me all you want, I made sure I have a good stash of foods and snacks he can eat, and the chocolate that is safe for him. I wouldn't call it stockpiling but we definitely bought more than we usually do. And I have a couple of months of medications for him as he needs to take antihistamines every day. Reading about the cancelled deliveries and empty shelves I'm so glad I did.

I want my kids to have enough to eat when I am stuck at work, especially as they won’t get fed at school if they close. I’m NHS frontline and the next few months are going to be extraordinarily difficult, so yes, I’ve bought some extra pasta and cereal so I have one less thing to worry about when I’m working 70plus hour weeks. The kids of essential workers are going to have a shit few months as it is without having to do their own shopping as well as cooking and laundry and looking after younger siblings and doing their schoolwork. My mum usually helps me but she’s 75. In my defence I haven’t bought any extra bog roll as I will be wiping my arse at work, time permitting

Miajk · 16/03/2020 14:06

Yep, obviously situation is very different for people who actually have to stockpile. NHS staff and all workers who are putting in the extra time to deal with this situation should be given a lot of support.

All posters who are saying that they're glad they stockpiled because shelves are now empty.. well yes, they are, because you all stockpiled/panic bought. You are the issue.

If we all kept normal everyone could order groceries and buy things as usual :)

@48Crunchymum

"Buying a bit extra = prudent
Buying 100 bog roll = acting like a cunt"

The latter are ruining it for all of us.

Agree with crunchymum here 100 %

@Miajk
Absolutely agree with you. We have only bought what we need as normal in our 2 week shop. Alot of friends have been ott buying fucking loads of toilet rolls and pasta. Seriously- all we have to do, is buy as normal and there will be plenty for us all. All shops need to place restrictions on how many you can buy. To curb the panick buying and stock piling.
