AIBU to think panic buyers are not only selfish but also stupid

First of all, if you buy out all the soap and sanitiser so there's no left for anyone else, you're not really that safe. Because everyone else is walking around spreading germs anyway.

But also, don't panic buy. Shops won't close instantly. Once the government tells everyone the world is on lockdown, then panic buy, but for now just stop being an idiot.

Educate yourself, wash your hands. Tired of seeing people buying PPE for builders/decorators and using it as a sanitary mask (not medically approved). Or wearing masks that don't cover their nose, just mouth. Also wash your hands after using the toilet anyway.

What's really scary is that if there was a real threat to humanity we'd kill each other with our stupidity and selfish greed quicker than the actual problem would.

OP posts:

I agree to an extent, however those in the “risk” category I understand.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll1 · 15/03/2020 18:40

Definitely stupid. And selfish.

Alyssum34456 · 15/03/2020 18:41

People panic buy because they haven't got enough to keep them going in isolation. Considering over 70s will soon be isolated for 4 months, I don't think this is stupid at all.

Gadgnkk · 15/03/2020 18:41

People are frightened, this is a global pandemic not seen for a century. Be kind to people who are afraid.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 15/03/2020 18:43

I bought the last two boxes of Weetabix in Sainsbury's yesterday and worried that people would judge me for it. I'm not panic buying - they only had the small boxes left and DP and DD both love them, and DP is having to work from home this week.
I don't agree with panic buying but I do think we also need to consider that lots of people are going to be stuck home for long periods of time.

Raver84 · 15/03/2020 18:44

Why is it stupid to plan for feeding your family and keeping them clean in the event you will be stuck at home? If you don't want to buy extra soap then good for you but if other want to that's fine. Some People are more organised than others. That's life.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 15/03/2020 18:47

Yes OP 100% agree. And the panic buyers are showing themselves on the thread. Hopefully natural selection does the job anyway

JasonBrun · 15/03/2020 18:47

I keep seeing empty bread shelves? A loaf of bread lasts what, a week? If you freeze it it takes up a huge amount of space that could be used for much more food. Panic buyers are stupid.

PumpkinP · 15/03/2020 18:47

I don’t think it’s stupid. I am a lone parent. I have no family help. So I have been panic buying to prepare. Who is going to shop for me if I have to self isolate?! I’m making sure I’m well stocked up.

Babytigerrr · 15/03/2020 18:48

Its not organised to buy 20 bottles of hand soap. It is not organised to buy 100s of toilet rolls. Even if we go into lockdown the supermarkets wont close. They didnt close in italy did they?

Loads of this stuff will sit in peoples homes for months or end up in the bin.

These people are not organised they are selfish idiots.

Buying enough for one family for 2 weeks (which now isolation is 1 week is more than enough) is fine. Buying enough to feed the 5000 is unneccesary.

Crunchymum · 15/03/2020 18:48

Buying a bit extra = prudent
Buying 100 bog roll = acting like a cunt

The latter are ruining it for all of us.

aroundtheworldyet · 15/03/2020 18:49

How much extra soap and toilet roll do you think you’ll need for 2 weeks.
Or even a month.
I mean genuinely

Rosehip10 · 15/03/2020 18:49

Panic buyers are idiots.

user764329056 · 15/03/2020 18:50

Sheer bloody stupidity and sheep mentality

idontlike789 · 15/03/2020 18:50

It is selfish and stupid because there will be more delivery's tomorrow and the next day .Hmm
Being out and about and reading some of these posts is showing people in a not very nice light at all . There were 6 loaves of bread left yesterday I took 2 as my usual shop , I wouldn't dream of taking all 6 loaves .
People unable to buy calpol and baby milk it's shocking and I honestly never thought I'd see the day that I can't get toilet roll in the year 2020 .
Also a car near me was broken into to steal the hand sanitiser ,shocking AngryAngry

MolyHolyGuacamole · 15/03/2020 18:50

@PumpkinP do you think that you are the only person in your position? Because of the panic buying many others like you are unable to get basics for their children. If everyone shopped as normal it would be fine. Everyone doing this is self-centred acting like they are entitled to behave this way because their situation is unique.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 15/03/2020 18:51

Friend works in sainsburys. Someone had 7 bottles of calpol in their basket. Whenever they were actually sold it but still..said stock coming in going out but straight away gone!
Fair enough add the extra bag but not 10 packs of soap and whatever else. It's all madness.

HasaDigaEebowai · 15/03/2020 18:52

I suspect today a lot of it was older people who expect to have to go into extended isolation. I know PIL were in a flap about it. Its understandable to want to stock your cupboards if you think you might be in isolation for 16 weeks.

That said I struggle to understand how anyone hasn't seen this coming over the past month or so which would have enabled them to build up a stock a bit at a time and avoid the panic buying.

PumpkinP · 15/03/2020 18:52

No I’m not the only one but it’s not going to stop me being prepared. Not just going to sit there and wait.

Sparklingbrook · 15/03/2020 18:53

I think that panic buying is more contagious than the Corona virus.

aroundtheworldyet · 15/03/2020 18:54

What’s my elderly mother going to do. She hasn’t panic bought anything. She’s 88

Because some twat has enough pasta to last a generation

TellySavalashairbrush · 15/03/2020 18:55

Totally agree op. It’s the same when we are predicted snow. Bloody selfish and ridiculous.

DGRossetti · 15/03/2020 18:56

Supermarkets crackdown on what shoppers can purchase after panic-buyers strip shelves bare with restrictions on items including milk, pasta and loo roll

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8113773/Supermarkets-crackdown-panic-buyers-strip-shelves-bare.html

RhymingRabbit3 · 15/03/2020 18:56

I havent been panic buying. I think it is selfish but not sure about stupid - if you have a family to feed and are unsure whether you will be able to get food next week, I can see the logic in buying double this week.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 15/03/2020 18:57

@DGRossetti it's not going to change anything because the panic buyers will still be there at 8am when the crowds are too busy for the elderly and people who aren't panicking are getting their kids off to school or on their way to work
