No please do not buy an oxygen concentrator from eBay.

They’re not reliable, they’re not necessarily even properly tested, and unless you’ve had adequate training they really shouldn’t be bought by the average person who has no idea what they’re doing. And from eBay of all places.... Angry

AlternativePerspective · 15/03/2020 07:17

And this is part of the problem.

We have idiots like the one above suggesting people buy medical kit from eBay and others who are profiting from that idiocy. The one above perhaps?

Confuzzled123 · 15/03/2020 07:42

Hi @teacherspet. I knows exactly how you feel. It’s just so awful. However, even if you have every condition known to be a risk factor, you still have a good chance of recovery.

Try to stay safe as much as possible and keep healthy otherwise. I’m boosting my mother’s vitamin d consumption plus we are taking vitamin c with zinc.

Who knows if this will help but it’s worth a try.

@Delicatelyscentedflavour FFS it is NOT flu! Do wise up before you post. It is a virus that can cause pneumonia. And yes, flu can too, but this is not flu.

The risks are that no one has any immunity to it (unlike flu.)

JinglingHellsBells · 15/03/2020 07:51

@teacherspet There is a difference between self isolating (meaning you lock yourself in a room in your home and do not touch anyone else there or eat with them, or share anything) and taking care.

You are most at risk from your family.

They are mixing with the public so they need to protect you by handwashing the minute they come home, and maybe changing their clothing.

We are not self isolating, but my mum in her 90s has stopped going to clubs she belongs to ( often with up to 70 people there), and using supermarkets- we are buying her food online.

Likewise, I am reducing my own social contact to protect y DH who has a health issue which could put him at greater risk ( we are in our 60s.)

PLEASE DONT USE TEA TREE IN A DIFFUSER IF YOU HAVE PETS

@Mohster Op has dogs and tea tree oil in a diffuser is toxic for dogs so prob not the best advice, but I know it was from a good place

Homkaismycat · 15/03/2020 08:14

I’m thinking the same.
I got few conditions too but these would be manageable until late age.
I’m only 45 with a small child.
No friends around as they live far.
I can’t self isolate as of school run every day and my DH thinks nothing of all this, calling me hypochondriac nonstop.
His parents have lots of serious conditions too, but I get the same response too from them- in a fact his mum said just shut up and drink lemon drink- it’s nothing.
Plus he gives no shit of any extra hygiene, sits in dirty work clothes the whole evening.
I have to remind him to wash hands.
In his work people give no shit about it either, apparently they cough and sneeze nonstop on purpose..
So either my child ( corona cases in school) or him will bring it home.
So yes- It was nice to be alive while it lasted.

Whatever decision you take is the right one for you, OP.
No one else can tell you better.
I would choose to live my ordinary life but a little carefully.
I'm not so afraid of death, though.
I hope you come to peace with your difficult decisions.

teacherspet · 15/03/2020 08:54

I am very lucky that my family all totally support this, are very careful about handwashing and staying away from me. I understand that this might be a long term thing. I had a conversation with my dd about how it must be impossible for some people who need to to self isolate and I can see how awful that situation is. I don't understand how the government are not advising everyone with risk factors to not go to work. Obviously it would be personal choice if you wish to carry on as normal, but surely removing vulnerable people from the equation would put more people's mind at rest. As it is currently, there are people who sneer and think I'm mad, it would be good if I had validation from the government.

I appreciate you have an understandable high level anxiety. I am in a high risk category also but you’re acting as if you’ve got the virus and that you’d almost certainly not survive. Statistically, this is not correct. It’s not a given that you’d get the virus and you it’s not a given that it would be critical for you. Please try to keep this in mind. It’s ok to be scared but please try to rationalise that fear somewhat.

By all means, isolate yourself and be cautious. I think that’s sensible. I’m not judging you for this but try not to live life as if you’re definitely going to die, it’ll be utterly miserable. Try to keep busy. Flowers

PeggySuehadababy · 15/03/2020 15:32

healthy people in their thirties and forties are dying too Cannot comment about UK but in Italy only 2 people below the age of 40 died of coronavirus, and both had terminal illnesses.

OP, my FIL is older than you and has a heart condition (and had two strokes in the past). He will try and avoid crowded places and eventually self isolate until the situation becomes a bit more manageable. It is a time of great anxiety for many and is hard to maintain calm, but focus on the positive things you have at the presnt moment.

And I'm sure your age is a positive factor in the recovery from coronavirus.

teacherspet · 15/03/2020 19:53

As a vulnerable person, I feel that the government are saying they want to protect us, but are doing absolutely nothing. We are not allowed to self isolate unless we have symptoms, so we are expected to go to work amongst people who have no idea if they are infected because nobody is being tested. By the time they decided we should self isolate many of us will already be infected!

OP posts:
SquashedFlyBiscuit · 15/03/2020 21:58

I wish they were able to tell those with conditiona to stay home ao Id feel legitimate doing so.

Schuyler · 15/03/2020 22:17

There’s an element of responsibility that we all need to take. You are allowed to distance yourself or totally isolate. It’s obviously highly problematic if you’re employed and/or have other caring responsibilities. However, the problem for me remains whether the government tell me to self isolate for 4 months or not. The problem being that my employer won’t like it!

You also cannot put a blanket ban on it because some people even with chronic respiratory conditions may not actually be very high risk, especially if their condition is very mild and well managed. Whereas I have been told I would not survive being ventilated again, although this was discussed pre coronavirus. With this in mind, I am trying to be more cautious than someone with a very mild version of my condition.

It’s really bloody scary but do what you need to do.

BitOfFun · 19/03/2020 02:23

Did you watch the recent tv series of Catch 22 ? There was a character in that who said there was a choice: worry worry worry DEAD, or happy happy happy DEAD.

That's good advice, in my book.
