Over 70s to self isolate

Dodie66 · 14/03/2020 21:36

Over 70s are going to be told to self isolate even if they don’t have the virus and this will be coming in 5-20 days and last 4 months

Mummy I don't think it's WHO advice to close borders or stop flights.

People went to Italy at half term and before. They did not that Coronavirus was freely circulating in Italy.

When it did become clear at end of half term the horse had bolted.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I am no expert by any means but to me it seems the WHO still wants it contained.

That is not feasible.

Bool · 15/03/2020 08:42

@Mummyoflittledragon I don’t know how to say this but i was explaining the situation to my teenage son the other day and I was having to explain concepts to him like - yes but how does being an island help....think about it harder.

Random18 · 15/03/2020 08:43

C3line would you be self isolating too?

If you are working or have DC etc then I am sure.youncould talk to each other through the window

Bool · 15/03/2020 08:43

@Sunshinegirl82 that’s reassuring to hear.

Sunshinegirl82 · 15/03/2020 08:44

At the recent press conference Patrick Vallance said that when they looked into stopping flights they estimated that if you could stop 95% of flights you would slow the epidemic down by 1-2 days. They estimated they could probably actually only stop 50% of flights so the benefits just weren’t there according to the modelling.

Teateaandmoretea · 15/03/2020 08:45

Why is it acceptable to essentially lock up kids, but not older people?

It's baffling. Lock up the people who don't actually have any symptoms so everyone else isn't inconvenienced.

So why are Germany not suffering like France & Spain?

Because they have less cases, obviously.

This thread just shows why lockdown won't work. If people can manage it for 2 weeks then it needs to be carefully timed exactly as the government is doing.

And lockdown will cause deaths it will also negatively impact on health and make conditions that make coronavirus death worse (high bp and diabetes to name two) so people will be less able to fight it off. It will massively impact on mental health (which is a serious problem) So it needs to be used carefully.

Honestly speechless at people talking about a year 🤦🏻‍♀️. People are going to die there is absolutely no way round that whatever the government do.

C3line · 15/03/2020 08:46

Just wondering if we all have to go under lockdown after a couple of weeks could we be together. She lost my dad not long ago and already low. Can’t go weeks alone and we’re just at the end of the road.

Teateaandmoretea · 15/03/2020 08:46

When it did become clear at end of half term the horse had bolted.

And let's not forget closing schools caused massive spread, maybe it was a one-off bizarre scenario but it's what happened.

slartibarti · 15/03/2020 08:46

It's not a surprise, anyone listening to the news would have been able to see this coming for a while.
My 94 year old grandmother has spent the past week getting ready for self isolation, she'll be keeping in touch via face time and text and doing online shopping and is fairly postive about getting through it OK.

Yes, however the government could have enforced quarantine weeks ago. People on this site and undoubtedly elsewhere called for this to happen for travellers coming in from Italy amongst other places for some time. At the time, many mumsnetters were calling them hysterical. Well guess what? They were no such thing. So no, sorry I do not wish to be governmental cannon fodder especially considering my state of health.

Cameron2012 · 15/03/2020 08:57

My Mum is going to stay indoors from today, we decided this a few days ago.
We will bring her food and keep in touch via FaceTime etc.
I want my Mum to stay alive and will do whatever is nessasary to ensure this.

Random18 · 15/03/2020 08:57

mommy well quarantine yourself - problem sorted.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 15/03/2020 08:59

How do they get food/medication? if they are on regular, prescription medication, you will need to arrange the pharmacy to deliver. It's a feee service.

As food, in parts of China the people on lockdown were allowed out for food every three days I think?

Poppydaisies · 15/03/2020 09:01

My mum (80) lives with us. What do I do, put her in the shed? Not everyone lives alone or with a single generation

Nobody is forcing you to isolate her! But by isolating her as much as possible you're reducing the likelihood that she becomes ill and potentially dies.

So maybe all isolate? I know it's a pain and very costly but surely worth it if it saves her life?!

chomalungma · 15/03/2020 09:02

Matt Hancock on BBC now

JiltedJohnsJulie · 15/03/2020 09:04

She has access to more than enough pain meds to kill herself including a ton of tramadol and all the stuff my dad was given but didn't take when he was dying of cancer. Could you take it all back to your local pharmacy for destruction? When our DF was admitted to the hospice we did this, the drugs left over included half a litre of morphine in a bottle. We didn't want to take the risk of leaving a grieving woman alone with those kind of drugs lying around.

RainbowPenguins · 15/03/2020 09:07

China seems to be doing ok. That has been a lot less than a year, hasn’t it?

China is far from ok yet. Far too early to tell. They are still having new cases and deaths despite being under a very strict lockdown for weeks, why? Being complacent about China being ok is dangerous. Imagine the same happened here and people started becoming complacent about lockdown, the numbers will just increase again.
Nobody knows what's going to happen in any country for months to come, including China. Everybody is in this now for the long haul.

OddBoots · 15/03/2020 09:08

I suspect this measure is brought in partly to protect the over 70s but also as a step towards a later announcement that hospitals won't be treating the over 70s alongside hints that those over 70 and infected only have themselves to blame as they didn't listen.

Yeh sure that’ll work.😂😂 I need surgery, have 2 dogs and an 11 yo, who depends on me for almost everything.... and yes I do have a dh but feeding us isn’t part of his remit.

nellodee · 15/03/2020 09:10

OddBoots, my thinking entirely.

RainbowPenguins · 15/03/2020 09:12

Yes even the WHO have stated restricting travel is ineffective along with temperature screening. The problem is it sounds 'huge' when a country puts this in place and sounds like they are doing more, so I think it makes people feel safer even if it's not going to make a huge amount of difference. But we need to be focussing on things that are actually effective.

Random18 · 15/03/2020 09:12

mother I don't get it. I don't get what you want?

I am sure many questions will be asked later but now is not the time

Now is the time to get through this with as many people as possible living at the end of it.

OddBoots · 15/03/2020 09:15

Obviously the timing of this relates mainly to the stage of pandemic we are in but they may also have one eye on it being Mothering Sunday next week so many will have plans for extra and longer visits to their parents.

Daffodil101 · 15/03/2020 09:15

I think the government are doing the best thing. It’s different to what’s being done elsewhere, but if you had to make the decision yourself, what decision would you make?

I’d isolate the vulnerable and support them.

Random18 · 15/03/2020 09:20

Rainbow people keep saying the uk is ignoring the WHO.

They are re testing, but I wonder if it's the wHo that should be more realistic. Few countries have the capacity to test like South Korea.

But other countries ignore it - conveniently not mentioned.
