Supermarkets Is it still safe to go out to supermarkets?

Yabu Yes it's fine to still go.
Yanbu You should not go. Should have stock piled last week. (I did a bit but not as much as I should have and kids eat lots.)

It's still safe to go but they may not have anything to buy for the stockpile, that's the problem.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/03/2020 19:52

Sure, if you want to walk around an empty one!

RosehipRuthie · 14/03/2020 19:54

Completely safe to go. Just make sure you wash your hands afterwards (trolley handles are filthy things) and don't buy more than your fair share of anything / what you will actually use.

bengalcat · 14/03/2020 19:54

Of course it’s safe .

peachypetite · 14/03/2020 19:55

Most are pretty empty

glasshalfsomething · 14/03/2020 19:55

Of course!

crustycrab · 14/03/2020 19:58

Well no, you shouldn't have stockpiled last week Hmm that's what has caused this panic buying.

You should've prepped and then the toilet roll supplies wouldn't be diminished. But will anybody learn? Doubt it

ParkheadParadise · 14/03/2020 19:58

The supermarkets near me were absolutely mobbed today. Queues all the way up the aisles.

OddBoots · 14/03/2020 19:58

I wouldn't go for fun but if you need stuff then there is no point worrying, just try not to touch your face and wash your hands as soon as you can when you leave.

AccountAntsy · 14/03/2020 20:00

Of course it’s safe. You might have better luck with a small local one as the ones near me were fine today, it seems to be the big supermarkets where people are going nuts and panic buying everything.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 14/03/2020 20:01

Who knows? I have people on my FB feed who are out at pubs etc tonight having just done a “quick flit” to Paris or London. (I’m in NW England)

I wish these people would stay at home and out of my way once they arrive home from another area but they seem intent on spreading it from one part of the country to another (or even from another country to ours)

I can understand people wanting and needing to go out in their local area, but why travel a long distance and then come back and go all over the place. No doubt supermarkets will be full of CV germs very soon thanks to these gung-ho people.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 14/03/2020 20:02

To be clear, they are out at LOCAL pubs after just coming home from somewhere a long distance away.

Rhubarbpeony · 14/03/2020 20:15

It’s totally safe to go but because reams of selfish cunts have stripped the shelves of food you might not be able to bloody get anything.

Isla727 · 14/03/2020 20:21

It's not totally safe. If someone with Coronavirus touches your trolley or anything else that you touch then you might pick it up and rub your eyes or put your hands in your mouth.

If you can then use gel or wipes and then wash your hands as soon as you get home.

Horracewimp · 14/03/2020 20:23

I wouldn't count on supermarkets being safe. I have the joy of working in one.
I find it darkly humorous how some of the lowest paid people in the country will be expected to carry on working through this, no matter how bad it gets. I am now apparently an 'essential worker,' on not much more than 8 pounds an hour.
I will handle money and deal with face to face customers approximately a foot away from me, potentially 200+ a shift, with a smile on my face and the pretence that I have not a care in the world. Whilst really I am panicking that every single transaction could affect mine and my families health.
If nothing else i truly hope this makes some people realise what a predicament this country would be in without the lowly 'shelf stackers' and such in our society.

Rhubarbpeony · 14/03/2020 20:31

Sorry - I mean it’s as safe as anywhere else at the moment. People should still hand wash, use sanitizer and avoid touching their face etc.

Lordamighty · 14/03/2020 20:34

I was at M&S today, it was very busy, no shortages of anything, just washed my hands thoroughly when I got home. I even bought some loo rolls.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 14/03/2020 20:40

It depends how busy it is. You could easily spend 15+ minutes within 3 feet of someone in the queue who may or may not have the Coronavirus. If they sneeze or cough without using a tissue...
It's all about managing the risks.

Sparklingbrook · 14/03/2020 20:57

I don't think the supermarket is any less safe than other public places TBH.
Wash your hands before you go, don't touch your face, and wash your hands when you get home.
If you are worried about people coughing and sneezing on you though don't go.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 14/03/2020 21:06

Supermarket was fine near me. Same amount of people as usual. They’d ran out of toilet paper but I got some from the petrol station.

I had looooads of stuff in my trolley though as I couldn’t get a delivery slot for my usual weekly delivery on Monday so had to do a big shop. I’m sure people thought I was panic buying but it was just my usual amount!

Il be going again on Wednesday - You should be self isolating if you’re ill but apart from that of course people will have to go to the shops. This could go on for months...

Meme05 · 14/03/2020 21:32

Yes , if you have them though wipe down trolley handles or just try not to touch your face until after you’ve washed your hands at home. Go when there’s less people likely to be there (not at weekends).

Tonz · 14/03/2020 21:32

@Horracewimp I never thought of it that way. If Britain locks down shop floor workers will be crucial to keep our country going

sigmu87 · 14/03/2020 21:50

I have been using my local co op, including today and it’s been no busier than any other day. Of course it Is out of toilet roll, paracetamol and other food stuffs like Pasta and Rice but other than they you could buy anything.

I worry what will happen if the staff get ill

lorrainerose · 14/03/2020 21:56

Yes it's safe, no chance of toilet paper though

Vargas · 14/03/2020 22:00

DH went to M&S today in London and shelves were full, apart from pasta. Not sure about loo roll, he didn't give a full report Grin
