Shingles

TiddyTid · 14/03/2020 15:41

I've just been diagnosed with shingles. I have it in my mouth and left side of my face. Been given anti virals by the GP but advised to self isolate for 7 days as my immune system is not as it should be at the moment and I should also be avoiding those comprised out there, even though it's a small risk.

I guess there's enough going on out there at the moment they'll happily tell me to stay out of the way.

Luckily I work from home but just wanted to share my experience here. I feel shocking tbh.

Interesting. We have shingles here, not me, another adult in the household, but no similar advice. Do you think it’s becaise it’s in your mouth?

Gilead · 14/03/2020 16:07

Had it three weeks ago, hope you feel better soon. 💐

TiddyTid · 14/03/2020 18:12

Etinox yes I think it's because of where it is. It's also affecting my eye. I can't help touching my face a lot and obviously have a virus in my mouth. They wanted me to go in last night at 10pm and wait (up to 6 hours) but I persuaded them I'll be ok until this morning. Didn't fancy a waiting room full of poorly people including me and no sleep and thought they'd have bigger fish to fry! I just wanted to know whether I'd be right to self isolate with no CV symptoms really.

My colleague has shingles just now too.

Of course you should follow the doctors advice!

wouldyouadamandeveit · 14/03/2020 18:43

I think I may possibly have Shingles too, though unconfirmed as yet. Noticed a strange rash develop on one side of my forehead down around (though not in) my eye from yesterday morning. Feels tingly and hot (compared to other side of my face) and today I want to itch! No blisters yet though, so may be not Shingles?

Guess it might also be an allergic reaction to something, but will try to get into the doctors on Monday to confirm.

TiddyTid · 14/03/2020 18:50

No rash on my face as the blisters are on the roof of my mouth but yes, skin around left cheek and eye feels like it's burning, very sensitive to touch and hot , jaw aches (like toothache) and left eye really dry. Also completed bloody exhausted. I've had quite a traumatic year so far, last time I had this was 8 years ago also after a stressful episode.

I've just recovered from shingles. I had it around my waist. Can't imagine having it in my face. I had the antivirals and loads of painkillers. I was signed off work for 3 weeks. This was pre cv. I think your doctors advice is sensible. Hope you're feeling better soon

TiddyTid · 14/03/2020 20:32

I've had so many messages, not just here but IRL with people who are being diagnosed with shingles or know someone who has it? Is this usual? It is a different virus but fighting any virus makes you a little less weak to fight another.

OP posts:
inselfisolationnow · 14/03/2020 20:37

Do you know I was just thinking there seems to be a lot of shingles about.

inselfisolationnow · 14/03/2020 20:39

Have you had a cough or fever since December?

I'm really wondering if covid-19 has been circulating for months now and people have had it without knowing, immune systems effected then getting shingles a while later

As you can tell by my user name I'm really bored

TiddyTid · 14/03/2020 21:01

I had an awful virus type thing before Xmas, as did DH. Wiped us out for weeks. Stuffed up, cough and generally unwell and knackered. This is interesting. Fever? I don't know, I'm menopausal so have been soaking the bed most nights and put it down to my age Grin

TiddyTid · 14/03/2020 21:04

It is interesting how many seem to have shingles now and how 111 were pushing me to be seen asap. The GP today had no hesitation in his advice. We are not being told everything. Course not.

OP posts:
inselfisolationnow · 14/03/2020 21:04

I mean it started in December in China didn't it? How long did it really take to get over here with air travel.

TiddyTid · 14/03/2020 21:07

It started in December in China because that's when they declared it. Who knows. All I know is I was surprised at how 111 called me back within minutes trying to get me seen for something relatively "normal" and saw me today and said self isolate. I asked if this was connected and was told no.

OP posts:
inselfisolationnow · 14/03/2020 21:09

There's so much unknown isn't there. I don't think the authorities know the half of it and they're certainly not sharing what they do know with us

MitziK · 14/03/2020 21:12

Shingles can be deadly. The last thing an elderly, pregnant or immune supressed person needs if they've braved the supermarket fist fights over Andrex to get their food is to get killed off by shingles instead because somebody didn't isolate until the last blister dried over.

No conspiracy about it. It's just not something they want you to give anybody else - no point in increasing the numbers needing respiratory support, after all.

TiddyTid · 14/03/2020 21:15

Exactly Mitz that's why I called 111. Shingles is shite but there's a
deadly virus out there as well. Both together? I was saying this to the GP and he agreed.

OP posts:
MitziK · 14/03/2020 21:26

I don't think there's any correlation between the two. There are always multiple diseases knocking around, mumps was also recent (again, bloody anti vaxxers ) - I reckon that it's being treated as more serious because they don't want shingles patients cluttering up the respirators and HDU beds - and because it's so bloody painful/dangerous to others.

It is so shit to have even if you are generally fit and healthy - hope it's a mild case as they go.

Dontsayyouloveme · 14/03/2020 21:33

I had shingles before Christmas, on my back on the left side right under my bra strap. Pain and soreness was all the round to the front and into my left boob! And I only had 7 spots but it bloody hurts! I was also exhausted and was off work for 4 weeks. It’s a bloody nasty virus in your entire body so I’m not surprised the GP told you to self isolate.. shingles is horrid enough never mind anything else on top of that! Take it very easy and Hope you get better soon! Flowers

wouldyouadamandeveit · 15/03/2020 00:39

I have felt like shit, actually since the new year. Stye in one eye, sinus issues and completely feeling wiped out and then some (to the point I couldn't physically keep my eyes open) . No fever, but snotty, bit of a cough, but the potential shingles really does, at this point, feel the icing on the cake. Unless I get Covid-19............

I have seen an endocrinologist once for other reasons, but can't help feel it is all linked somehow.

Historyofeverything1 · 15/03/2020 00:55

I had shingles in the eye 10 years ago.
It has caused permanent damage to the eye - make sure you get your eyes tested once all has settled as optician can then refer you to eye clinic if needed. I now wear glasses due to scarring and have eye drops due to dry eye.
I also felt really ill for about 5 days before starting to improve my friend who had it at the same time was fine no symptoms felt a fraud. Everyone is different just take any medication religiously and rest for the best outcome.

carlywurly · 15/03/2020 08:23

We've got someone off with shingles. They were sitting next to someone who is now self-isolating due to a persistent cough. Hmm

Gilead · 16/03/2020 22:10

And a month later I’ve got it again. It’s definitely a reaction to my infusion which is frustrating and now means I have to start again.

LennyPugGoat · 26/04/2020 15:32

DD (adult) called 111 yesterday as she had pains exactly like dontsayyouloveme they called her back this morning and advised to call straight back if she got any spots.

Getting ready for work and yep, spots on her back just above her bra strap called back and they arranged for a doctor to call her straight back who asked for a picture and diagnosed shingles. Prescribed antibiotics (collecting them now) and co codemol (sp) 2 weeks off work possibly 3/

LennyPugGoat · 26/04/2020 20:32

Any tips on dealing with the itching please?
