Is this whole thing being exaggerated?

Coronavirus seems to only affect mostly older people with already compromised immune systems. So far we have had only 11 deaths some being 80 even a ninety-year-old. The press is whipping people up into a hysteria in my view I have a degree in biology I am not a doctor but I would say that some of this is ridiculous.

Thought as much @MrsBobDylan :)

It is quite shocking the level of ignorance that some people are exhibiting. I can only think they aren't paying any real attention to what is going on in the wider world.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 15/03/2020 20:11

Tell that to the families of the 1089 dead due to this virus in Italy.

WanderlyWagonInWales · 15/03/2020 20:24

@agentstarling: Initially, I thought it was being exaggerated. Then I heard from friends in China, Italy and Spain. And then Leo shut down Ireland in the run up to St Patrick’s Day. So no, I don’t think it’s being exaggerated any more and I’m scared that BoJo and his cronies in Westminster are not doing enough and we will all be screwed.

Have a look at this video and see if it helps in any way...

Here in France half of those in ICU are in fact under 60.They may have underlying conditions( don't know) but don't be complacent and underestimate this virus.

souldivachakkakahn · 15/03/2020 21:02

@MacBlank your post makes no sense whatsoever. So do I assume you're doing nothing different? Is it business as usual for you? You may realise your error when the world around you becomes unrecognisable.

MacBlank · 15/03/2020 21:38

I'm not doing anything differently... I already wash my hands, and cover my sneezes.

I don't go round touching people, as I'm not that sort of person!

So, no, I'm not changing a thing I already do.

However, if you're the one that doesn't wash hands regularly, or sneeze proudly, and touch everyone, then ok, change your ways!

I dont go buying lots of arse wipe, as a cold doesn't give you the shits! Plus, scraping by on disability benefit, I can't afford to go buying lots of stuff I don't/won't need.

I don't need to go round panicking, and taking stupid precautions, if I catch it, I catch it! There's nothing you can do to guarantee you won't get it.

Look at fate as your guide to Life, and you won't worry about things so much. What'll happen, will happen.

....
For all the others

I'm not missing the point or talking bollox, you just worry about it too much.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Israel has come up with an antidote. If true, why hasn't more been made of it? If false, why hasn't it been disputed?

Sostenueto · 15/03/2020 21:45

It's great to not worry but if I get it I know I will die........comprimised immune system due to cancer treatment 2 chronic underlying conditions and if the meds have to make choices through lack of ventilators I will be one of those way down the list.

DioneTheDiabolist · 15/03/2020 21:48

If false, why hasn't it been disputed?
Because governments have better things to do than deny every crackpot conspiracy shit that raises its head.Hmm

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 15/03/2020 21:51

you just worry about it too much

Untrue. I'm not worrying about it. I am realistic about it. There's a big difference.

Inkpaperstars · 15/03/2020 21:59

I didn't realise Trump University ever offered biology.

aurynne · 15/03/2020 23:01

@agentstarling I hope you volunteer your parents to be the ones who go first

CrisPbacon · 15/03/2020 23:59

I work in the front line. It is not being hyped if anything it's being played down to avoid panic. For the record. If you look hard enough you could describe just about anyone as having "underlying health problems"
All lives matter and anybody who succumbs to this is dying prematurely, whatever other health issues they may have

Sostenueto · 16/03/2020 06:47

The Government will as from today be making official daily reports.
Europe will not sell us ventilators in fact no one will. The daily figures i.e 35 dead 1,300 tested positive are those tested in hospital. So 1,300 people are currently in hospital with the virus supposedly. We only have 5000 ventilators. If all tested positive in hospital need a ventilator you can see where this is going. In my humble opinion as testing for all has stopped I estimate at least 10,000 would test positive in the general public.
We cannot shut schools because people like my DD could not work ( cares for young adults with severe autism and learning difficulties). She has been told if one of her residents gets virus she will have to go into isolation at work to continue to look after them! I will be expected to look after her DD! Are you having a laugh!!!
Everyone's life will change and the financial divide in this country will become wider. We see it already with people who can afford to shop in bulk versus those that can't.
The whole world is in Mass panic. Look outside your bubbles and see the world for what it really is.
I have no intention of self isolating yet. I have 3 hospital appointments this week am only one in family with car and who can drive I must continue for as long as I can. I along with thousands and thousands in this country do not have internet at home or access to any internet. Old people especially. Deprived children especially. Those that have should shop exclusively on line leaving shops available for those to shop weekly who have no internet. And so it goes on.
Now this desperate government who people voted for in the belief we can stand alone are resorting to beg car manufacturers digger manufacturers, in fact anyone, to build respirators! Europe are sharing theirs around their member states along with masks and protective clothing for Frontline workers. But never fear little Britain will continue with a stuff upper lip!😁

MrsBobDylan · 16/03/2020 07:43

Those who feel this is being hyped, are suggesting that it is the hysteria causing problems and older people are acceptable collateral damage.

Well, as of today, we are self-isolating because of my 12 year old son. He has 2 health conditions which makes him very vulnerable. We don't want to wait for herd immunity or whatever else it is which the Government are pretending is the best for us.

I won't get paid, we will struggle financially, my other two dc won't go to school and dh will work from home, I am cancelling 3 non-essential hospital appointments for ds this week.

Why do we think we're so different to Italy, Spain et al? Do people really believe our 'stuff upper lip' will save the vulnerable people in society? Heavens above.

I can't risk my son's life. I can't risk his lungs being permanently damaged even if he does survive.

TheCanterburyWhales · 16/03/2020 07:51

MrsBob Flowers you are doing the right thing.

Sostenueto · 16/03/2020 08:53

The government is relying too heavily on community spirit. I did not see community spirit yesterday in the heaving supermarkets. Undoubtably there are many who will help others but it won't be enough. Strange and trying times ahead for all. Let's hope enough people keep their humanity, empathy and truly caring side of themselves through hardships to come.

Teddybear27 · 16/03/2020 09:47

I was wondering if we were all being heavy-handed about this last week but things have really kicked off now.
My husband's company which is huge and worldwide have closed their offices and everyone is to work from home for the foreseeable future.
The person that put the original post obviously doesn't have anyone elderly in family or they wouldn't have put such a silly comment..
This is far more serious than some people realise. This is a pandemic and there is no vaccine and many people may have symptoms and not realise and possibly pass them on.
Saying that I think we all need to calm down a bit, we have been through things before and everything will calm down eventually but things are going to get worse before they get better. ❤️😷

DitheringDoris · 16/03/2020 09:50

@Sostenueto I haven’t seen much community spirit either, I think it’s down to fear of what may happen. If we had a strong, trustworthy and reassuring prime minister I think things would be different. People wouldn’t feel the need to panic quite so much.

swishthecat · 16/03/2020 09:54

MrsBobDylan you are very wise. I wish you all the best and hope that you all stay well. Flowers

Our government is letting us down, so it seems that businesses and individuals need to make their own decisions. Theatres in London are making the decision to close. Other busnesses will follow.

swishthecat · 16/03/2020 09:55

DitheringDoris I agree totally.

formerbabe · 16/03/2020 09:55

I must be in denial. I'm not at all worried...unlike dh, who is checking his life insurance policy is in order and his will Hmm

Sostenueto · 16/03/2020 10:03

A sobering thought is those that lose lived ones won't be able to bury them straight away if they have been in contact with their loved ones as they will have to go into isolation themselves☹️
A member of a family who has just lost their loved ones has asked people to do acts of kindness rather than flowers or donations to remember him by.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 16/03/2020 10:06

If anything its being downplayed to avoid mass panic.

Nanalisa60 · 16/03/2020 10:06

I’m very worried for the over 70’s and people who have underline health problems, I feel a lot better after seeing a lady doctor on breakfast TV who has had it, and explained how bad it was and how she has now got through it and on the other side of it.
