They are young fit and best placed to fight the virus.
They can replace all the vulnerable groups that volunteer.
Sport tribal loyalty goes direct to local resources so we can have community/team support.

On full pay so the bills should be ok?

A lot of them are self-isolating

TheQueef · 13/03/2020 18:27

That's nice of them.
But after a week, when they feel fit.

Imagine..
Man City food bank V Man United food bank, who has the best stock.

I don't think anyone can just turn up and volunteer at food banks and homeless hostels. Don't you need DBS checks and references and stuff?

Apple1971 · 13/03/2020 18:53

To be honest I was thinking this - I’m a teacher and assuming schools closed and I was not self isolating, I would rather be helping in some way that sat at home.

Perhaps there should be some sort of local coordination on this.

TheQueef · 13/03/2020 18:58

I ruled out emergency health worker and childcare because DBS and training etc but these are for TESTED people and we could use a good hearted local or community rivalry.

There must be a few roles that for the bill?

Did I mention they get paid quite a lot

Do you know how much these "assets" are insured for? Probably would void the insurance contract if they knowingly put themselves at risk of an epidemic virus. Cynical of course but I'm sure they're not allowed to volunteer even if they wanted to.

TheQueef · 13/03/2020 19:04

Insured is another bonus, how many of us have insurance like that?
It looks like sports people are the only ones being routine tested so they will be fine.
Peak of fitness, athletes at their prime really hence the wedge.

YABU Hmm

if you are jealous of their pay package, just do the same.

Next we'll go back to the old debate about putting people on benefit to similar work. Enough already.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 13/03/2020 19:09

No mention of the royal family yet? You could put them to work too....

Notonmyshift · 13/03/2020 19:10

Yab totally U. HTH

Hereforthenamethreads · 13/03/2020 19:11

It is always irritating to suggest somebody else should give up their time to do something for charity. They should do it if they want to and you can do it if you want to.

heartsonacake · 13/03/2020 19:12

YABU and quite frankly ridiculous.

Leeds2 · 13/03/2020 19:13

I think the FA/EFL statement specifically said that Club staff were advised to avoid outside contact, such as the community work they do.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 13/03/2020 19:13

Insured is another bonus, how many of us have insurance like that?

I don't think any of us is worth 50 mil to our employers so... No one?

Where are you helping at the moment?

ilovesooty · 13/03/2020 19:16

Ridiculous thread.

TheQueef · 13/03/2020 19:18

Personally just my parent and Aunt but I'm immunosuppressed and had to isolate, my work have volunteered me though because I WFH already Grin

I think we will see big changes after this, what better way than to step up?

OP posts:
Pukkatea · 13/03/2020 19:19

Yes, I can't see a single logistical issue with Sergio Aguero just rocking up at the local food bank...

TheQueef · 13/03/2020 19:23

Feel like I should know him Pukka just can't quite..

What would happen? Seriously? Kidnap?

OP posts:
Livelovebehappy · 13/03/2020 20:12

If they want to volunteer, then of course. But if you’re suggesting they are forced by their bosses to do it then no. If my workplace closed temporarily because of the virus (I would be on full pay)and my manager said I had to go do voluntary work instead I would absolutely refuse. I may do it of my own accord, but definitely not be pushed to do it.

Areyoufree · 13/03/2020 20:13

They've only cancelled matches, I imagine that they will still be training. Odd thread.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 13/03/2020 20:19

Why just them? Why not everyone not at work?

heartsonacake · 13/03/2020 20:21

Why just them? Why not everyone not at work?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss Because OP has a chip on her shoulder about how much they earn.

Mayorquimby2 · 13/03/2020 20:21

I mean is an impressively contrived way to criticise athletes

Fucking stupid, but impressively contrived all the same

TheQueef · 13/03/2020 20:22

Because they are fit and tested.
We won't be tested until hospitalised but they will be, so they would be the ones starting off our herd immunity.

And they have fans and supporters who can support their efforts.

Add in other groups who rely on public support and can afford it though if there is more.
