The virus is SARS COV 2, but the disease is COVID 19. Similar to HIV is the virus name, but AIDS the disease name.

I don’t think most people know this. My sister tried to correct me when I said this is a SARS virus by saying, no it’s a corona virus. Grrr.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 20:44

Yes exactly this is fact.

I think most people have known this for a few months tbf.
At least the Chinese and Italians.
Boris is still calling it "a bit of a cough" I've heard.

SapphireSalute · 13/03/2020 20:45

lol it really doesn't matter...does it!??

PlanDeRaccordement · 13/03/2020 20:46

It’s (SARS) why people with lung diseases, ie COPD are at very high risk.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 20:47

What I don’t understand I keep seeing articles in the paper referring to SARS and Ebola like they were past events and what we have learnt Confused from then.

When is a SARS virus?!

OP posts:
Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 20:47

It does matter a lot.

OP posts:
PlanDeRaccordement · 13/03/2020 20:48

It matters because my sister has asthma and did not realise she was at higher risk because she did not know it is a SARS virus. SARS viruses are the worst of the corona viruses. It goes cold-Flu-SARS in severity ranking.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 20:52

Yep it matters to me.

I have had pneumonia in the past I now have a bad heart.

My children are asthmatic.

We have a rare genetic defect. But you would not guess.

Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome is not OK for us thanks.

andadietcoke · 13/03/2020 20:54

The virus is SARS-CoV-2, the disease is COVID-19

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 20:54

Yep

OP posts:
flissity · 13/03/2020 20:54

I have read that for communication purposes (WHO etc) we are calling it Covid19 and not ‘a SARS virus’ as if it’s referred to as SARS it will create more fear in people. Especially in Asia because of past experiences of SARS.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 20:56

Well yes but people have a right to know if they have heart or lung conditions. Or know people who do.

OP posts:
Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 20:58

Brilliant link thank you.

OP posts:
PlanDeRaccordement · 13/03/2020 20:59

I agree. It is almost like saying people can’t handle the truth. So they just skip over the fact it is a SARS virus.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 21:00

Calling it cute names is not helping society change things like their hand washing and social distancing.

It’s a car crash in the making.

It also causes lasting lung damage in many sars cases.

OP posts:
flissity · 13/03/2020 21:02

It may help the people who say “it’s just the flu” get a grip and realise the seriousness.

flissity · 13/03/2020 21:02

Yes I wonder what the long term damage is to the survivors

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 21:04

Yes I think from my work and looking around many are not scared enough.

The teenagers and 20s think it’s funny not realising they will most probably live yes but it could possibly damage their quality of life.

I would know.

I get what you mean. I am not enjoying all the corona jokes on social media tbh. Not saying I want everyone to freak out, just to realise what’s going on. I’m 30wks pregnant and I want my parents to be around to enjoy this next grandchild.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 21:12

Best wishes on your pregnancy.

I appreciate what you’re saying and agree.
Just to clarify though, if you contract SARS-CoV-2, you will not automatically get ‘severe acute respiratory distress syndrome’. ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome www.nhs.uk/conditions/acute-respiratory-distress-syndrome/) is different to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).
