Agree but academic stats say 20% will.

It’s the fact the young are not being made aware it could cause them long term damage.

And the death rates for people with heart, lung conditions is between 6.7%(lung) and 10.3% (heart)
Surely a person with heart disease or COPD should be aware this is not a common flu and what their odds are.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 21:30

Yes so you take further precautions.

It needs to be said.

Where does it say that 20% of people will develop Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome? Most people with ARDS require invasive ventilation. I’m not seeing anywhere that such a large no of people require this.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 21:43

I might be wrong. I hope I am.

I think that was for the older age group.

Stats show around 10% are critically ill, ARDS would come under this umbrella.
Yes, sadly, this virus does seem to be much harder on older people. It’s worrying. :(

Ofthread · 13/03/2020 21:46

The virus is extremely similar to SARS, hence why it was called SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2)

Stats are concerning for people aged 70 plus ....and 70 really isn’t that old these days.

SARS-COV-2
Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 21:59

No and those in their 70s contribute a lot. I know my parents do.

Purplewhitelie · 13/03/2020 22:12

I don’t think 50 something parents/teachers realise. And haven’t looked at this chart!?

There is evidence coming out of China that the disease appears to leave lasting lung damage in some people who recover, including younger people. Obviously we don't know yet whether this will be long-term damage.
