Been exposed, have symptoms, formally told to only isolate for 7 days?!

I was told I had been exposed after receiving healthcare from a medical professional who has tested positive.
Yesterday, I was told 14 days isolation (from exposure date) and they were arranging testing as I have a high temp.
Today, I get a message saying I’m out of isolation as it’s been 7 days and that’s it, bye bye.
Obviously can’t get through to speak to anyone and unsure what to do in terms of isolation.

An hour later and I cannot speak to a human. :(

I would stay at home for another 7 days personally . Get well soon xx

Spam88 · 13/03/2020 09:44

It's 14 days from exposure, or 7 days from onset of symptoms I think?

Cornettoninja · 13/03/2020 09:46

I would also carry on for a further seven days and intermittently try to keep contacting someone. If you’re concerned about work then tell them to look up nhs/government guidance and get back to you. They need to be patient if they want evidence since the health service is understandably overwhelmed at the moment.

I saw a headline (so I can’t back it up with a anything unfortunately) that they are only testing hospital admissions now so it may be that you don’t fit the criteria for testing now.

How are you actually feeling? Do you have any current symptoms?

diddl · 13/03/2020 09:52

So you still have symptoms but they won't test?

I don't understand this.

Sounds really odd to me.

Spam88 · 13/03/2020 10:03

They're not testing anymore I don't think? Just treating all symptomatic cases as though they're CV.

SallyWD · 13/03/2020 10:04

The new advice released yesterday evening is that they will only test people who are ill enough to be hospitalised. Everyone else just needs to self isolate. They're expecting thousands more cases and don't seem to have the resources to test everyone.

SallyWD · 13/03/2020 10:05

They also said don't bother to call 111 if you have symptoms unless you rapidly deteriorate. Advice has changed from previous advice.

diddl · 13/03/2020 10:07

"Just treating all symptomatic cases as though they're CV."

Ah ok.

And the treatment is-look after yourself at home??

So I'm also thinking that these cases won't be recorded as CC?

Seeline · 13/03/2020 10:08

They reckon that you are no longer infectious after 7 days of symptoms, so no need to isolate after that. Obviously if you are still feeling unwell, or worse, then contact NHS111.

Flamingnora2020 · 13/03/2020 10:11

Just treating all symptomatic cases as though they're CV.

Which is crazy really 🥺

I'm from a country in lock down. The advice here isn't 7 days self-isolation (goes for feeling unwell too not even proven contamination) , it's 14 days. And 24 hours symptoms free i think.

Feel better soon.

Flamingnora2020 · 13/03/2020 10:12

I thought the incubation period was 14 days and I’m not out of that period of time yet.
I only got a temperature yesterday.

Homkaismycat · 13/03/2020 10:13

This is shocking.
How they gonna know all new numbers? If not testing?
Absolutely madness!

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 13/03/2020 10:15

Just continue to self isolate. The reduction of testing is going to skew the figures but using up valuable resources testing for no improvement in health is a waste. |Treating every illness as potential cv works

MrsBeeluga · 13/03/2020 10:19

The average incubation period was estimated to be 5 days up to 14 a while ago, but could have changed by now.

I would self isolate until well and then atleast 24 hours.

MrsBeeluga · 13/03/2020 10:20

24 hour more, sorry Smile.

MyTwoPence · 13/03/2020 10:20

www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/stay-at-home-guidance-for-people-with-confirmed-or-possible-coronavirus-covid-19-infection

I'd follow this advice from the government: 14 days from contact with a known case or 7 days from onset of symptoms.

PlugholePencil · 13/03/2020 10:22

They’ve said they are only going to test those who are hospitalised.

MyTwoPence · 13/03/2020 10:29

We don't need to know total numbers of cases, and in fact given that some people won't even be symptomatic it's all but impossible to know total numbers of cases. We already know there's community transmission, and aren't trying to contain it any more but rather manage the speed at which it spreads in order not to overwhelm the health service, we can track the progress of the outbreak by monitoring numbers of people with severe disease (i.e. those requiring medical treatment).

The biggest issue with Covid-19 is the sheer number of people who could require treatment at one time and limited resources to treat them, it makes sense to concentrate limited resources on caring for the sickest rather than confirming a mild case, when the advice to them will remain the same.

Cornettoninja · 13/03/2020 10:31

@Flamingnora2020 so you’ve started to show symptoms (which is what the original intubation period would have been to allow time to happen) in which case you start again with the advice for symptoms. So seven further days to see if it develops or abates. If it develops then you need to follow that advice and treat as CV.

It’s tough to be sure you’re doing the right thing at the moment Flowers

MyTwoPence · 13/03/2020 10:32

Oh also the advice from the government website is 7 days from onset of symptoms unless you haven't improved after 7 days in which case at that point you should contact 111 ( if you haven't already needed to due to the severity of your symptoms)

Isadora2007 · 13/03/2020 10:34

But you’re NOT out of isolation now as you have developed symptoms. So now you remain in isolation until you are 24 hours clear of your last symptom. Hope you get well soon.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 13/03/2020 10:39

BJ and his experts didn’t give any rationale for the new “only 7 days” advice. I’d do the full 14.

tammiedog · 13/03/2020 10:43

As others have said it's 14 days to see whether you're in the clear/avoided the virus but since you have now developed symptoms the clock is reset. They're no longer interested in testing people as there are just too many showing symptoms. You have had known exposure, now have symptoms so you need to remain in isolation for at least 7 days from onset of symptoms.
