Do I really need to stay home?

Me and ds have a cough which i believe is from a cold. We've both had runny noses and no temperature.

Does he really need to stay off school and do I really need to stay off work?

I thunk this thread shows the level of confusion about what we are supposed to do. It's a new persistent cough or a fever ie 37.8 . Asthma etc isn't a new persistent cough and a runny nose without cough or fever is 'okay' although I never understand people with colds who carry on infecting other people! Every single day someone gets sicker because a person thinks it's okay to splutter their germs in public. Schools are obsessed with attendance targets and bribe kids to stay in school even when unwell. . the government is trying it's best to give clear guidance. Follow it! I'm sure the guidance will change as the situation changes. But we all have a responsibility to look after other people and stay at home with symptoms.

@NoFruitTea

Get some long life food in - pasta, tins. Stick them in a box in a corner. It won't be forever, sorry if it clutters the place up a bit but this is a GLOBAL PANDEMIC.

Online shopping - £40 is the min value for Tesco - book some deliveries in now. Booked it weekly. You can change the order til midnight the night before so book in the basics needed to reserve the slot and change/amend the food as needed. They'll leave it on the doorstep if they can't come in.

tobee · 13/03/2020 09:45

It would be nice if people could just pass on advice rather than have to add the "how could you be so stupid?" tone. If people are asking on here, it's better that than they just decide incorrectly for themselves.

If it's clear for you bully for you.

NoFruitTea · 13/03/2020 09:45

As for parks, that is selfish. The virus lives on surfaces.

I said avoiding actual climbing frames etc so she wouldn't be touching any surfaces. What surfaces do you touch in a park field kicking a ball? I'm not talking about playgrounds

If you have the money to buy extra food and milk, you don’t need cupboards to it. Under the bed, top / bottom of wardrobes, the floor etc. Anything will suffice.

HasaDigaEebowai · 13/03/2020 09:47

I live in a rented studio flat. Not allowed to put up more cupboards, no space for a full size fridge.

So buy some stuff you don't need to put in a fridge and keep it in a plastic bag hanging off a door handle. You don't need anything to do that.

If you're self isolating, the advice is not to go outside, even for a walk!

helpfulperson · 13/03/2020 09:47

The guidance very clearly says follow it as far as possible. It is not expecting perfection. Not everyone is going to be able to follow it totally but the nearer you can the better. So, to use the food example, If you normally have to shop every day can you reduce that to twice in the week by changing your eating habits. Bagels instead of bread, long life milk, tins of stuff. Accept you may have a pile of food under the bed or sitting on the floor if you dont have storage space.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/03/2020 09:47

Cross post. Dogs walk along the routes you’re proposing. You could still be shedding the virus. Self isolating means staying inside your studio flat for 7/14 days or maybe even longer.

NoFruitTea · 13/03/2020 09:48

They'll leave it on the doorstep if they can't come in.

Yes but wtf happens in a lock down that lasts weeks? Where do the delivery drivers come from if nobody can leave house? Clearly they must be able to?

Jespers · 13/03/2020 09:52

@NoFruitTea

In that scenario we're truly f+cked aren't we, so let's not get there by having people gadding around when they're supposed to be in isolation.

But in a scenario where there are no delivery drivers able to deliver then the "feed the nation' plans take over with rationing, the military delivering food, and depots set up where people are allowed out under special circs to pick up their rations.

But, if we are start following, ACTUALLY following, the isolation advice we hopefully can avoid being delivered rationed food by soldiers.

Apolloanddaphne · 13/03/2020 09:52

Why does no one understand that lockdown does not mean an entire nation confined to their homes for weeks? It is just limiting movement and putting social distancing in place. People would still be able to go and buy food.

Here is an article about how it is working in Italy.

I've just had a bollocking from the gp. DD has had a night cough for over 6 months now. She also gets wheezy with any colds. I booked her in for an appointment 2 weeks ago and finally saw the doctor today, and she has now picked up a cold so is snotty.

The doctor practically threw me out of the surgery. I now feel awful as it really isn't the time to be investigating suspicious coughs. I'm sure it's nothing but who am I to diagnose? I'm considering whether or not to self isolate now 😔

Bathroom12345 · 13/03/2020 09:58

The supermarket earlier was full of people. Some people clearly had a cold and one elderly person was coughing and spluttering at the till. Someone told him to go home as he was not well but he claimed he needed to do his shopping.

He wasn’t happy being pulled up and clearly didn’t give a toss who he infected as long as he got his shopping done.

Never mind - when he infects the staff the shop won’t be open or have big queues because of lack of staff.

He also asked for a green token for the charity box and was most miffed when told they had been taken away (the assistant told him they were still giving the same donation). He just wanted to feel better about himself even though it was a bloody green plastic token!!

Some people are just so wrapped up in their own lives and selfish wants and we will see much more of this sadly

A08x · 13/03/2020 10:00

NHS advice web page literally states to stay home for 7 days if you have a new, continuous cough OR high temp.

Not both together.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 13/03/2020 10:05

it’s disgusting how terribly we treat our ill

Not when we are in the middle of an unprecedented pandemic which is killing people.

tobee · 13/03/2020 10:06

Thanks for that link Apolloanddaphne. Smile

SlayB · 13/03/2020 10:08

I know for a fact that my elderly father will ignore everything. I tried to explain to him but he said stop going on.

He will end up dead along with lots of elderly people some going out is their only form of communication with the outside world. The ones that like to chat to the check out supervisors.

When you go out today see how many people cough and show other very questionable hygiene behaviour. Look at the filth encrusted card terminal that people are touching. A girl in front of week a while back ( I have mentioned before) wiped her dripping nose and used the same hand to type in her pin.

I think the fact is some will and some won't. Perhaps they need health checks on all shops. I just don't think the measures will work is my point.

SlayB · 13/03/2020 10:09
  • should read a girl in front on me
madcatladyforever · 13/03/2020 10:10

God almighty, the third post in a row, no by all means go out disco dancing, it will be fine.

MonkeyClimbing · 13/03/2020 10:12

I can’t tell you how much this ignorance pisses me off. I’m 60 and have asthma - so potentially vulnerable to covid 19.
I work in retail. Yesterday a customer stopped me in the shop asking for toilet roll (we didn’t have any). He then went on to tell me how he’d been to hospital (for a different reason), was found to be running a temperature and is returning to hospital today for a covid 19 test. So he’d come out to panic buy in case he had to isolate.
What is the point of me washing my hands, taking every precaution I can if stupid people are going to put me at risk regardless?

AddressLabel · 13/03/2020 10:13

I’ve been sniffling and coughing at work for the entire week. No one seems to give a shit.

greathat · 13/03/2020 10:13

How new does a new cough need to be? Since the advice? A week before? It's nonsense
