AIBU to spray entire contents of shopping?

We are all aware by now that coronavirus lives on surfaces for a period of time. So I have been washing my tins, wiping down my boxes and packaging, etc of shopping when I unpack. Is everyone else doing this? Because the current advice of singing happy birthday while washing your hands isn't quite enough I don't think.

I don't think it's unreasonable OP, they're a surface I suppose. I haven't been but DP and I are giving door handles a wipe, our keys and phones when we get in as per expert advice on the matter, especially as he works with the general public in a close contact setting. We have deviated to separate beds as he has symptoms of a cold as of yesterday and are using separate towels etc.

I am very unwell with a chronic illness but would do so regardless as it hardly takes much time when you are having to make a beeline for the sink for handwashing when you get in. Just do what you feel is necessary OP. Over cautious isn't actually a bad thing if it isn't harming anyone or yourself.

Isla727 · 13/03/2020 00:29

I don't think it's unreasonable to do this, given that Coronavirus can be deadly.

I open packets, tip the food out and then wash my hands but my family are handling packets and then eating so I wonder if I should start doing this. It just seems like such a huge schlep!

Redshoeblueshoe · 13/03/2020 00:33

T0tally ha ha ha
A deep clean that would put a hospital to shame !
A family member was discharged from hospital this week, because the consultant said it was a far too dangerous place for sick people.

texasgurl · 13/03/2020 00:36

My mother is a nurse practitioner and she does this with her trolley and groceries anyway. I thought she was insane until I picked up the norovirus. The only public place I'd been that week was to the supermarket.

MinkowskisButterfly · 13/03/2020 01:11

@Glowcat my mother said she would stop offering the sign off peace (hand shaking) at church because "the bishop said to, and if he said it then it must be the right advice" she was complaining the priest was overly dramatic until she realised the bishop had said it! 🤷‍♀️ She was also a bit miffed at no longer being able to take communion on her tongue...that poor priest!

Isla727 · 13/03/2020 01:14

Oh just to add that I wouldn't literally spray the items as it wouldn't be good to actually ingest the dettol/disinfectant but wiping them should be ok!

Purplelion · 13/03/2020 01:19

Under 5s are the least at risk so based on that YABU

MyBlueMoonbeam · 13/03/2020 01:22

I always wipe my shopping regardless of Corona virus (OCD sufferer of 40 years)
Also never touch door handles etc - it's weird to think that other people are now living in my world 😣

Apileofballyhoo · 13/03/2020 01:23

I've been wiping the trolley handle for years but not the actual shopping. I think I'd get too anxious as I have a tendency towards OCD and I have to convince myself that the measures I take are enough or I wouldn't be able to draw a line and stop. I do take things from the back of the shelves though. I try and trust that the people stocking the shelves have clean hands. I got very anxious today though and had that horrible feeling that everything I touched was dirty/contaminated and washed my hands far too many times.

Apileofballyhoo · 13/03/2020 01:26

I was thinking that too BlueMoon, if people noticed me wiping my trolley today they'd have thought it is because of CV19 whereas I've been doing it for years. (Hardly ever get colds/flus though.)

I must say, a few years ago my parents came back from an overseas trip very sick. I had to drive them the three or so hours home. Really didn't want their bug, so had a tin of Glen20 in the car and everytime one of them coughed or sneezed, I'd spray. They were rather offended initially but got used to it. Got to their place and thoroughly sprayed the interior of the car then closed up and left it in the sun. Didn't get sick Grin which was unusual as I normally catch everything going around.

For corona I'm hoping work will say work from home. I'll get so much done if we can.

1forAll74 · 13/03/2020 02:04

I am just going in the kitchen to disinfect the two tins of tomato soup that I bought earlier. !

Coffeekisses · 13/03/2020 07:04

You’re spraying bleach on your food?!

longwayoff · 13/03/2020 07:06

While spraying our shopping we've got a Prime Minister who shrugs his shoulders and says 'many people will lose loved ones' as if that's perfectly acceptable. Nobody knows exactly what to do so we may as well do what we're comfortable with. I'm just staying in, no visitors thanks.

user1480880826 · 13/03/2020 07:07

What are you wiping it with?

BlondiebyBottle · 13/03/2020 07:21

Wiping packets/boxes with paper towels with a disinfectant and water. Cans/bottles washed with washing up liquid. Fruit and veg in apple cider vinegar and water. Front door keys, wheelie bins, bottom of shoes bleach in water. Yes it is a pain, but going out, people are definitely not sneezing or coughing into a tissue or their elbow.

My father refuses to do anything until it’s ‘official advice.’ He was still drinking communion wine right up until they stopped giving it.

I was still doing this last Sunday and will again in 2 days unless they've "stopped giving it" in this week. I imagine my parents are the same.

Glowcat · 13/03/2020 07:32

Seriously, why? Why would you take that risk?

MissCherryCakeyBun · 13/03/2020 07:34

dayswithaY · 13/03/2020 07:36

@MyBlueMoonbeam I'm also an OCD sufferer and it's like now everyone understands me! I've been wiping down my shopping for years, cleaning light switches, remote controls, keyboards, this is all normal for me. Years ago I trained myself to never touch my face.

Funnily enough I'm quite calm about catching Corona, I even went to a restaurant last night. I still rubbed the cutlery clean on the napkin before using it though. Wonder how other OCD sufferers are coping?

Glowcat · 13/03/2020 07:37

Where are the telephone sanitisers when we need them?

youkiddingme · 13/03/2020 07:45

I'm putting shopping such as tins that I don't need for a while in a designated seperate area where they won't be touched for at least a week. I'm buying fruit and veg wrapped (contrary to my usual eco tendencies) and discarding the packaging immediately. Anything else is getting wiped with dettol wipes.
Post is opened immedietly and the packaging discarded.
Hands are washed as soon as any items entering our home have been dealt with and then any door handles etc that I have touched are also wiped.

youkiddingme · 13/03/2020 07:47

Oh and money too, change is all being wiped.

DappledThings · 13/03/2020 07:57

Where are the telephone sanitisers when we need them?
Ha ha. Wonder how many people will get this?

BlondiebyBottle · 13/03/2020 08:00

The post?! Of course, that's a surface too right... Mobile phones, door handles. I'm really surprised that nurseries, schools and colleges, mass gatherings etc haven't been shut yet, yes I know most of us work, but if the rest of Europe are doing it why can't we do the same? This is getting surreal..
