Cold or Coronavirus?

DP has come home from work with a sore throat, aches and pains and a temp of 38.3. He has a slight cough.

He's not one to whinge, despite having a penis, and isn't prone to colds. He thinks he should go to work tomorrow, as he has things that need doing.

Should I tell him not to be such an arse and should we self-isolate? We've both got leave booked for the next two weeks and staying indoors for a fortnight is a bit of a grim thought.

@hermione thanks , that's good to know.
I can do much of my work from home so I think I'm going to do that instead. Said as much to my employer today and didn't get contacted back... seems win win , if people are able to WFH and only have mild symptoms

ifonly4 · 12/03/2020 21:38

As from today it's self isolation. Even if it ends up being a cold, better to have time off and not get rundown, that way is immune system is the best it an be if he does come into contact with the virus.

Dementedswan · 12/03/2020 21:39

My whole family are coughing and have symptoms, yet I'm still expected to take the kids to school and dh has to go to work despite them complaining about his cough....

ElsieBobo · 12/03/2020 21:41

I don’t agree that the advice is very clear. What is a continuous cough? Are we talking normal cold and cough that one gets this time of year or literally ‘continuous’ as in non stop constant cough? I’m confused whether or not we are to self isolate for a normal cough In the absence of fever?

bemoreeverything · 12/03/2020 21:42

don’t agree that the advice is very clear

I said it was very clear in the context of calling 111. The advice is NOT to call. It's clear.

Poppydaisies · 12/03/2020 21:47

He needs to stay at home for 7 days.

And he should not call
111.

This was made very clear today.

Poppydaisies · 12/03/2020 21:48

dh has to go to work despite them complaining about his cough....

Isn't that a little selfish? His poor colleagues.

He needs to stay at home for 7 days. It's quite clear.

I have every sympathy. I need to stay at home for 6 days (cough started yesterday). It's a pain in the arse but it's to protect people.

SweepTheHalls · 12/03/2020 22:00

@zafferena, where did you get that symptom list from?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/03/2020 22:20

According to the Guardian, “guidance asks people to self-isolate at home if they have a new and persistent cough for up to four hours, and a temperature of 37.8 and above”.

I read that as quite differently to the cough most people get with a cold. Just me? I always get a mucus-y cough with a cold, and my understanding was that the CV cough was dry. I feel more confused than ever!

ihaveaquestionplease · 12/03/2020 22:25

@Judystilldreamsofhorses that's wrong anyway. It's a temperature OR a cough. It doesn't have to be both.

I'd suggest people read the NHS sites or government site for proper guidance .

I’ve had a cough for a couple of days, mildly feverish, chest tightness. 90% sure it’s just a bloody cold so far, but even boss (work in a very small retail business) has said to stay home if worse. Bloody hell!

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 12/03/2020 22:39

I have a tickly cough, headache, achey joints & runny nose. No fever. No sore throat so I’m pretty certain it’s just a cold. What’s the point of self isolating? I will but it’s not CV symptoms?

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 12/03/2020 22:47

I should say, I feel mostly ok, and have had a lovely day off (my normal day off) chilling, but obviously I don’t want to spread anything around right now so will probably self isolate as recommended. Just a real bugger as we’re very broke right now 🤒

zafferana · 13/03/2020 09:06

@SweepTheHalls I got it from The Times yesterday.

Mary1935 · 21/03/2020 09:40

He needs to self isolate for 7 days - more importantly the rest of the household need to self isolate for 14 days.
