Cold or Coronavirus?

DP has come home from work with a sore throat, aches and pains and a temp of 38.3. He has a slight cough.

He's not one to whinge, despite having a penis, and isn't prone to colds. He thinks he should go to work tomorrow, as he has things that need doing.

Should I tell him not to be such an arse and should we self-isolate? We've both got leave booked for the next two weeks and staying indoors for a fortnight is a bit of a grim thought.

He needs to self isolate for 7 days as per today's guidance. I developed v mild symptoms yesterday - cough, chills, headache. I intend to do the same.

A cold rarely causes a temp that high. He needs to call the NHS 111 coronavirus line and selfisolate regardless for 1 week

You don't typically get a fever with a cold. He should self isolate.

He doesn't need to call - seriously, the advice was very very clear!

Anyone with a new, persistent cough or temperature is to isolate for 7 days.

Don't call 111 unless symptoms are worrying enough that they may need additional support such as antibiotics.

Mild symptoms can be checked using the online service.

Sorry to sidetrack - but what is classified as a new cough? Few days? A week?

@NauseousNancy I read it as new in the sense that you don't usually have a persistent cough, might be wrong though. Also that apparently there's something about it being 7 days from when your cough starts, so perhaps if it's been longer than that the horse has bolted already.

Another for self isolate. I’ve come down with a 38.5 fever, shivers and muscle aches out of the blue this afternoon, which is worrying as I never get a fever usually. So self isolation for me (as far as I can with a 5 week old attached to me 24/7!). I hope that your partner (and his unusually stoic penis) feel better soon.

In a generally healthy person, there's hardly any difference between Coronavirus and a common cold, apart from the fever and a more dry cough. It targets the lungs.

Which is probably why it spreads so easily, we'd normally go about our usual lives in that situation, but now he'd need isolate.

As a NHS worker, a fever and cough would mean staying home. Never would I have done that before.

Self isolate for 7 days. He must do the right thing.

@Butterwhy I’ve had this now since the middle of last week, when advice was to do nothing if you hadn’t visited anywhere affected. So self isolating now seems very pointless!

I developed what I’m as sure as I can be just a cold since Tuesday and have been self isolating myself just in case.

The issue with this advice is that I have mild symptoms as of yesterday so will self isolate, but what about others in my family? If it is CV that I have then they will have been exposed, so are they meant to continue with work and school, spreading it until they develop symptoms ?

This just goes to show how the governments policy is not going to work. It is relying on individuals self isolating - what if they can't afford too/don't believe CV is that bad (frankly the government aren't making out it's that bad/don't care?). Most families cannot isolate one individual - do people understand that a whole family will need to isolate in this siutation? This government is pushing all decisions back onto the population.

All my instincts say the whole family should self-isolate while any one has symptoms. In practice, how will this work, we could have weeks / months off work? Other countries seem to accept this as inevitable, here if feels as though individuals will be blamed (by employers or schools) for making responsible decisions on behalf of the community.

No reflection on OP’s husband, but I don’t believe the majority of people will self-isolate with colds. I teach, and pretty much have the cold from October to May. My workplace puts you on an “alert” and a meeting with HR if you are off sick twice in six months, then three times is a referral to occupational health. People are scared to be off ill, plus know it causes huge inconvenience for colleagues and students.

What about people on zero hours contracts/gig economy workers who can’t pay their rent or eat if they are not at work?

The govt is clearly hoping that the general public begin to associate 'cold symptoms' with 'possible CV' and make responsible decisions. As you say, for a great deal of people this decision has been taken entirely out of their hands. I have no idea what my rights are re. SSP if I self isolate for 7 days. Pretty sure DP would get nothing.

Tiddle - you get SSP from day one if you self isolate, even if it’s just a cold.
