Suddenly so many people know a ‘government insider’ or someone ‘high up in medicine’

Seriously, I’m getting rather sick of it.

Dh boss is apparently related to a government insider and is spreading apocalyptic rumours around the office.

My exh new wife now has a brother who is ‘high up’ in the medical world, also spreading panic among her family.

Two people I know on Facebook have posted about having high ranking government contacts telling them to panic.

It’s funny how all these top secret people suddenly seem to crawl out of the woodwork.

I love the fact the only practical advice or info they gave was too panic’

ButteryPuffin · 12/03/2020 15:56

Yes, amazing how many people are so well connected!
For balance, I don't know any government insiders or 'top medics'. I will just have to read the news..

Sugarmirror · 12/03/2020 15:56

to panic

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 12/03/2020 15:59

DH is a doctor and says “it’s going to be bad and lots of people are going to die” but he does not say that anyone should panic! He just says that everyone should be sensible and not take stupid risks🤷‍♀️

Doyoumind · 12/03/2020 16:02

I think I might self isolate just to get away from these kinds of people. Everywhere I go people are spreading panic.

I am not overly worried about my health or my family's. I am more concerned about the financial impact.

Connie222 · 12/03/2020 16:02

I think some people just love to stir the pot, which is rather unfair to those who are worrying about family/friends.

It’s just the invention of these fictional top secret people who have suddenly appeared to ram home their own views which gets on my wick.

"High up in the medical world" 😂 She'll be referring to some bog standard doctor or nurse 😂

ColaFreezePop · 12/03/2020 16:03

Government insiders and top medics don't tell people to panic. They are generally the calmest and most boring people I've met. If they rant they do it in person but only when they know you will keep your mouth shut until what they have told you is in the public domain.

Russellbrandshair · 12/03/2020 16:06

Yeah it’s all BS. It was just like a few months ago, everyone was a brexit expert giving out financial predictions. Now those same people are suddenly virology experts or know virology experts.
I bet you their insider “info” came from twitter 😆

Connie222 · 12/03/2020 16:08

@ColaFreezePop apparently the fictional ones do! I know I shouldn’t make light of it really but I can’t help rolling my eyes.

OP posts:
MrsGrindah · 12/03/2020 16:09

Government insider = admin assistant in HMRC
High up in medicine = works in Boots

Russellbrandshair · 12/03/2020 16:15

@mrsgrindah

😆

Connie222 · 12/03/2020 16:17

@MrsGrindah nail on the head!

Ugh anyone who uses the phrase 'I know someone high up in x y or z' usually know jack shit, and are very insecure in their status in life and want other people to think they are important enough to be in the 'know,' whilst everyone else are just peasants who need to just wait for the info to trickle down to them.

Gives me the 😠

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 12/03/2020 16:28

It’s like the conspiracy theorists that the virus was made to kill off the elderly and reduce the care bill and pension payments🤦‍♀️

IrmaFayLear · 12/03/2020 16:32

(Very) cccasionally there is a thread on something which I actually know about and there are people pontificating or citing "someone high up" and I know they are wrong. I once called someone out on something that was absolutely 100% false but they wouldn't have it.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 12/03/2020 16:33

It's the same as all that who ha about the queen supposedly having died and the military getting ready. I vaguely remember a WhatsApp from Gav (!?!?) or some such

virginpinkmartini · 12/03/2020 16:33

Someone in my family does this. Every field she has worked in, she tries to act like she is in 'the know' about something, like a terrorist act that happened, brexit and now the coronavirus. If you bite then she just goes 'I've been instructed not to say anything further, sorry. It's a national security issue and I could get in a lot of trouble,' so now I just don't engage and change the subject and it properly winds her up because she wants me to be impressed and try and probe her 😂 In reality, she has an entry level job.

Connie222 · 12/03/2020 16:36

'I've been instructed not to say anything further, sorry. It's a national security issue and I could get in a lot of trouble’

Oh dear God!

OP posts:
ZarkingBell · 12/03/2020 16:43

Oh dear, I know lots of people like this, due to my career, and I know people feeding directly into Downing Street right now. Sadly they can't make the PM make all the right decisions. At times like this people stick carefully within their professional competence.

One of my friends is one of the national medical experts all over the media. But I know enough not to bother him for a wee chat about corona virus while they are working very hour that God sends. He doesn't have time for that right now.

Stonefancier · 12/03/2020 16:50

It's the same as all that who ha about the queen supposedly having died and the military getting ready.

Yes, that's exactly what I was going to say -- there was a lot of pontificating about Big Announcements and Cancelling Leave and Funeral Uniforms on Standby. And everyone scuttled off into the woodwork again when it turned out that HM and Phil the Greek were fine and dandy. Grin

DH, because of his job (which involves huge international sporting events) has actually had to deal with the HSE a lot lately, and, really, there isn't any 'inside track' apocalyptic scenarios being planned for that aren't already being discussed in the public domain, like treatment of the bodies of people who die for Covid-19. Or not that I can determine.

Stonefancier · 12/03/2020 16:51

'I've been instructed not to say anything further, sorry. It's a national security issue and I could get in a lot of trouble’

Waterboarding? Grin

LynnSchmob · 12/03/2020 16:52

It’s a bit like how everyone was a constitutional expert a couple of months ago.

CloudPop · 12/03/2020 16:53

Whereas of course people who do generally know things they aren't allowed to talk about, never mention the fact.

ButteryPuffin · 12/03/2020 18:03

Oh yes, where's Gav on WhatsApp when you need him? He was probably stood in the corridor listening in on the Cobra meeting..
