Does anyone actually have the virus?

With all the talk and speculation on these boards and with thousands on here everyday, may I ask if anyone on her actually has the virus?

OP posts:
Frownette · 12/03/2020 18:55

Sazzle27 they would suspect corona anyway if all symptoms are gone through, then take it accordingly

ploppityplop · 12/03/2020 18:55

my thing could be a seasonal thing going around?? Its so mild!! whatever it is. But I have avoided everybody!!! the house is so clean lol

Hodgewell1 · 12/03/2020 19:24

Are you able to give a bit more info on what it feels like and what we can expect, particularly how it progresses over the days?

HollowTalk · 12/03/2020 19:28

I don't believe nobody will see someone who can't breathe and is coughing up blood. That's bollocks.

I agree.

Frownette · 12/03/2020 19:36

I hope so in a way, if I had those symptoms and was turned away I'd feel crushed

Ohnoducks · 12/03/2020 19:41

A friend today self isolated and called 111 as he is presenting with high temperature, cough, sore throat, generally achy and groggy. Asked to be tested. Refused a test and even better told due to the nature of his work (paedeatric consultant!) to go to work as it is probably a cold (you'll be pleased to hear he's refused). And they wonder how super spreaders come to pass.

cologne4711 · 12/03/2020 20:42

This article on the BBC might be helpful in giving a bit more insight into the symptoms: www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-51858845

Bathroom12345 · 12/03/2020 21:00

With no general testing when this is over the data will be wrong! If there are no tests then people might think they have had it (and haven’t) and of course there are the people who just fancy a week off work and are ‘self isolating’ maybe more than once. No company would risk bringing it up as a sickness issue in this current climate so this could be massively taken advantage of by some.

SelfIsolating · 12/03/2020 21:08

I've been ill for 4 weeks, steadily getting better, so if it isn't Corona, there is also another virus out there that is hellish.
Also done the coughing up blood and struggling to breathe. I never bothered calling anyone at the time, but in hind site think I probably should have. I have just hunkered down and tried to look after myself.

WickedWitchOfTheDesk · 12/03/2020 21:11

Anecdotally there is speculation among GPs, that Covid19 in some form has been circulating for a few months anyway. That weird virus my mother in law had, the two weeks when one of our GPs just couldn't stop coughing (and wore a mask to protect her patients), that time when another doctor felt so rough he actually took to his bed (unheard of).
Patients have been presenting with malingering respiratory illnesses that don't quite follow the usual pattern.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if loads of us have it or have had it.

Charlottejbt · 12/03/2020 21:15

A week ago DD2 and I recovered from the exact same symptoms as Mr and Mrs Tom Hanks have had. I didn't think it was Covid because we weren't coughing or headachey, but I'm still having slight trouble breathing.

Frownette · 12/03/2020 21:16

SelfIsolating how long did it take for the breathing to clear?

zafferana · 12/03/2020 21:22

These are the symptoms of coronavirus, vs those of a cold and flu.

Does anyone actually have the virus?
SelfIsolating · 12/03/2020 21:25

The first two weeks were worst with the breathing, since then it has lessened but it's still not back to normal. And still coughing but again not as hard or uncontrollably.

FionaCorkesWardrobebyKamizole · 12/03/2020 21:29

My DS was sent home early from school today with a lot of the symptoms zafferana listed above. But the school nurse didn't seem unduly worried as he also had a snotty nose so she seems to think its a cold as he's not had contact with anyone with the virus or been abroad (or actually anywhere apart from school & home for the past 2 weeks). I'm surprised how quickly this has come on, he was fine last night & this morning, just moaning about being tired and not wanting to go to school, which is pretty standard for an 8 yr old with a spelling test to do.

He's very under the weather this evening though but GP surgery have a message on their website not to contact them about it, just self isolate & monitor the situation, and the school nurse said we didn't need to contact 111 as we don't meet the criteria to be tested. Normally I wouldn't be worried, but these are different times.

Frownette · 12/03/2020 21:30

You've got far more patience than I have, I've never had breathing problems but if I did I'd be begging someone to make it stop.

Speedy recovery.

SelfIsolating · 12/03/2020 21:30

Specifically the night I spent a while on all fours on the kitchen floor, gasping for air and coughing up blood was about a week and a half in from first getting sick.

fairyfingers · 12/03/2020 21:36

Another who had a 'something'. Hit like a brick last week with fever, chills, aches and a dry cough. Took 3 days in bed. Sore throat came in and then snotty nose. 8 days later still not right and coughing a fair bit. Still a bit wheezy and like there is a bit of effort to take a proper breath but heaps better. Kids and dh all fine.

It's the snot that makes me feel like it's a fluey cold rather than anything else. What was/is odd though as I always get very snotty/headachey with a cold (sinus issues) and I'm just not at all with this. Some snot yes but not as much as usual and no headache which is properly odd for me. Oh and I lost my appetite which I never do.

The only thing which is now giving me pause is that my boss is potentially come down with it - he's been off with what sounds like an accelerated version of what I have. We both complained of feeling off colour at the same time so it would be logical that it's the same thing.

fairyfingers · 12/03/2020 21:38

If I look at the symptom chart I have something in each column! More in the flu column than anything else

SelfIsolating · 12/03/2020 21:42

I usually get sinusitis, that's my usual 'weak area' but this never touched my sinuses. Small amount not snot for maybe 2 days no more than that.
Hope you're back to normal soon fairyfingers and that your boss is ok too.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 12/03/2020 21:43

@ploppityplop i had that same thing for a few weeks. Not a terrible cough though. Mainly at night. But no aches like flu or temp.

MMN123 · 12/03/2020 22:13

They don’t have capacity to test the volume of people already infected. And doing so would add little value anyway.

If you have a new prolonged cough and/or fever then assume it’s COVID.

I have a colleague currently infected. Her husband has been ill for 2-3 days, now she and the children all have it. Most of his work colleagues and their families have it.

It’s most likely been spreading for weeks. It’s still early days. Those with is now (who recover) will be immune. So they can function while we all gradually get it.

Aim is to spread out the duration so we have fewer people at a single moment in time who are at their most ill.

It’s likely most of the population will get it in the coming months. They are trying to avoid a vast number having it at once. Estimates are about 10,000 probably are already unwell. That is a drop in the ocean. Several tens of millions will eventually become unwell. Most won’t have severe symptoms that require admission to an intensive care unit. But at any moment in time a small % of whoever is ill at the time will. So they are just trying to slow down the number in crisis at once.

No chance they can stop us getting it. If we did a Wuhan and stopped the spread now, it won’t go away - it’ll just take off again later in the year with a worse impact because the old will already be getting ill with flu and any of the mild cases with it will be snotting and sneezing everywhere because it’s winter. The virus will spread slower in summer. We need the majority to have been infected and recover before next winter.

Seems a well thought through rationale in the absence of a cure.

DrMaryMalone · 12/03/2020 22:18

I know someone who tested positive. He had been in northern Italy and returned last week. Currently in hospital but starting to feel better. Now needs 2 negative tests before he can be discharged.

coronade · 12/03/2020 22:31

MMN123 Totally agree. We have another winter to come with the virus before a vaccine is available to the masses so any shut down tactics now will just push the problem into next winter.
They can’t stop the virus, all they can do is try and manage it and minimise the impact to our daily lives and it’s impact on our NHS. Hopefully by allowing a steady stream of us to have it over several months (Mainly spring/summer) the very sick will be able to get the care they need.
My mother is 90 and in a carehome with dementia. If she gets it she might not survive, but equally she could get the flu and not survive. I also would not want her taking up an ICU bed if someone younger needed it. This may sound harsh but we need to think about these situations now before they happen.

MMN123 · 12/03/2020 22:35

And the next few weeks will be particularly bad as all the healthcare staff will be exposed, get ill and recover. Or in some cases not recover. But still. Once they recover they will be able to work unhindered - but lots and lots of them will get it now because they gave no immunity and so we (the great unwashed) need to get it less while that’s happening! But not so much less that enough of them they don’t get it. Quite the balancing act to be achieved!!
