Will teachers and school staff in the UK still get fully paid if schools close due to Corona virus? I cannot find any information about this and starting to worry. Sorry I know it's another Corona virus thread Blush

Yes as they are on a salary.

Hahaha88 · 12/03/2020 13:53

Everyone should still be paid if their place of employment has to shut because of Cv

DisasterousManagementPlan · 12/03/2020 13:55

Teachers will get paid.

However, there's presumably a possibility that the government/schools might do what US local authorities do about snow closure days and just add the closure days on to the end of the school year and just have a shorter summer holiday period. That would probably be politically popular with a lot of parents.

Ariela · 12/03/2020 13:55

Of course they will. The poor teachers will be expected to set work, and probably mark it, all by email, remotely. So I don't expect their workload to do anything other than increase.

Not necessarily true. It depends on their contract and whether Lay Off is provided for.

Dh teaches in the independent sector but as far as I know of teaching contracts, they will get paid.

opticaldelusion · 12/03/2020 14:00

Will people get paid if they can't work because they have to look after their child(ren) for a month?

They can't do this AND expect us to set work remotely during a closure period. It has to be one of the other. We're paid for a set number of hours during the year (which we all work more than but that's beside the point) so we can't be directed to work more than those hours.

Nuffaluff · 12/03/2020 14:04

I will be setting and marking work remotely as well as completing a list of professional development training tasks that have been set.
I’ll be looking after my own kids too.

Comefromaway · 12/03/2020 14:04

No, we won't. We could choose to take holiday or unpaid leave unbless we were sick/self isolating in which case we'd get SSP.

If the business were to close down we would be put on short time/laid off and paid £29 per day for 1 week unless we could work at home. Actually no-one would get paid at all unless I worked from home as only I can operate the payroll software & I donlt have a PC at home (the accountant could do it too if I gave him the passwords).

SlayingDragons · 12/03/2020 14:05

I am support staff - not teacher. If the school is closed but staff are in, I could be there and could help out with admin but the reality is that there would be very little for me to do. If school was closed and staff weren’t going in then I would have nothing to do. I’m also only on a temporary contract (which is term time only). I suspect that if the school closes I won’t get paid but no-one can actually clarify this for me

Paddington68 · 12/03/2020 14:08

Yes they will get paid.
Money made from before and after school club and school meals will however not be paid.
Schools will therefore find their deficits getting larger.

ScorpionQueen · 12/03/2020 14:09

Not if they have summer holidays booked and get fined for taking out in term time. You can't just change the way term times and holidays work like that, it takes a lot of planning.

Hercwasonaroll · 12/03/2020 14:13

Yes they will. Most will be setting work while the schools are shut. I won't be teaching extra weeks to make up for it if I've set work. What other sector expects you to work twice?!

Whichoneofyoudidthat · 12/03/2020 14:24

I’m in Hong Kong. Schools have been closed for 7 weeks now. All the kids are doing online learning/Skype/slack/google type meets. Email , etc.

Friends of mine are teachers and working harder than ever. It’s very tricky for the younger kids without laptops, but they’re muddling through.

WhatHaveIFound · 12/03/2020 14:30

I think regular teachers on salaries will get paid. However DD was talking to her singing teacher yesterday and as a freelance teacher she's really worried the school closing and not being able to earn any money.

Comefromaway · 12/03/2020 14:33

Yes, this will hit peris badly.

tootiredtoconga · 12/03/2020 14:37

We've been told that we will be paid but will be expected to work from home.

Maythelordopen1 · 12/03/2020 14:37

I’m not in the U.K. but in Ireland and all school staff on contractual employment are still being paid. They have set up social payments for those who are self employed or not covered for sick leave under a contract! See attached... I think the payment is €200 per week.

Not a teacher but a library assistant. Really stressed about this as and no one at work can clarify! Am on a permanent contract but can’t do my work remotely...

Chocolateandamaretto · 12/03/2020 14:38

Sorry meant to say library assistant at a school

annamie · 12/03/2020 14:40

Will people on zero hour contracts be screwed?

babymidgetgem · 12/03/2020 14:40

My husband is a supply teacher. We will be totally screwed.

caulkheaded · 12/03/2020 14:43

On a contract yes, of course!! The same as snow days. Supply staff or zero hours no- you’re not needed on that day.

AliasGrape · 12/03/2020 14:46

Supply teacher here too, also pregnant and plan was to save as much as possible now as I don’t get maternity pay, so yeah I’m screwed. Very lucky that I have managed to at least save a bit of a buffer having had two long term supply placements back to back, and DH earns enough to cover essentials but it’s definitely going to be very tight.

My understanding is that salaried teachers will still get paid, but I’ve not seen it confirmed anywhere.

Who will pay?
