Will teachers still get paid if schools close Corona virus

Will teachers and school staff in the UK still get fully paid if schools close due to Corona virus? I cannot find any information about this and starting to worry. Sorry I know it's another Corona virus thread Blush

Our union has stated advice to say that UK teachers (non academy) will get paid and should not expect to then have to make the time up at the end of the year.

We will, therefore, like on snow days, be expected to do other tasks on our days off. Usually it is paperwork and planning or policies. This time it would also, I imagine, involve setting of some work.

Those of us who will be home with our own children will just have to find the time to fit those tasks in when we can around looking after our own children. I take this as a necessary compromise for being in a job that means we can/will be able to stay at home with our families when the schools shut without losing pay. Anyone saying 'I can't do anything as I'll be looking after my children' will have to find a way in their quiet times/bedtime/when a partner, if they have one, is also home.

If they themselves are ill, that's another matter entirely and not one I think headteachers have particularly considered when it comes to the 'get ready work to set at home come the shutdown' brigade assumes this can and will happen.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 14/03/2020 20:45

I don't think that there should be an expectation to be 'live' at set times when it comes to teachers who are looking after their own kids - that inflexibility won't work.

Apple1971 · 14/03/2020 20:55

I’m a teacher and we will get paid - we will be setting and marking work remotely,

I hope that other staff will too - our cleaners, canteen staff and office staff. Will be awful if they don’t x

Ilovearcticroll · 15/03/2020 16:26

My children's school parents' Facebook page is now awash with people saying they aren't sending their kids in whether or not the government says they should and that they are going to insist that school sends home all the work. Hmmm...

Needtobepositive · 15/03/2020 16:29

My husband won’t get paid if he can’t work. He’s self employed. I won’t either. I’m a casual worker. We will probably lose husbands business if it goes on too long.

Ilovearcticroll · 15/03/2020 16:47

It's a terrible situation. I had no work last week and anticipate the same next week as the home Ed families I work with are voluntarily shutting down already.

Imok · 15/03/2020 16:57

I'm a TA. It's been made clear to us that if we close, we will be expected to work at home. We have online training set up and as well as working our way through the training modules we have been told we may have to 'attend ' training via Skype etc. Teachers will be expected to set work, both online and paper form for those who don't have internet access at home. So yes, I fully expect to be paid if the schools to close.

MoltoAgitato · 15/03/2020 17:00

How about academy teachers?

peoplepleaser1 · 15/03/2020 17:06

Most likely yes.

Please know though, that many many many people will not get paid (or will be paid very little, SSP is £98 per week) if their place of work closes, if they self isolate or are sick.

So if you do get paid, then please realise how lucky you are!

LaurieFairyCake · 15/03/2020 17:08

Yes, academy teachers will get paid - they've been paid for the students for the year.

Any Academy chain doing different would get a terrible reputation and Dh has just said to me (SLT in Academy) that if another academy chain didn't he'd be instructed to get on the phone immediately to poach the best teachers Grin

They have about a dozen vacancies (London)

HoldMyLobster · 15/03/2020 17:13

Our schools have closed down.

Teachers log on at their usual start time, set work, mark work, make themselves available for calls or video chats with students, deliver lessons via video, etc.

The tutoring companies I know of have switched to doing tutoring online by Zoom.

MetallicPaints · 15/03/2020 17:36

I'm a TA and have no idea about our pay. Mind you I'm not convinced we will close, we have a family who are self isolating and we are still open, not talk of closure whatsoever.

Farahilda · 15/03/2020 17:37

Yes, because many/most will be working on the delivery of online lessons and revision assistance

BritWifeinUSA · 15/03/2020 17:40

In this country they don’t. They are getting unemployment benefit instead. And the missed days/weeks are being deducted from the summer holidays. So we are having the summer holidays now, as it were. They will get paid for the weeks of teaching in what was the summer holidays, however.

blue25 · 15/03/2020 17:44

Will be a rough time for peripatetic teachers. Potentially no pay for months.

HoldMyLobster · 15/03/2020 17:49

In this country they don’t. They are getting unemployment benefit instead.

Huh - ours are being paid. Where are you in the US? Are there no lessons at all running there?

Michaelbaubles · 15/03/2020 17:50

Well, we’re not lucky to get paid if we are, in fact, working. Yes I’d consider myself lucky to get paid for a long holiday but I don’t think that’ll be how it pans out and the extra stress and workload in the run up won’t earn us any extra pay (not that I would expect it to, but putting together online work, getting to grips with remote working is all taking time, effort and is genuinely stressful).

DinosApple · 15/03/2020 18:05

I'm really not sure. I'm a 121 TA on a 12 month contract. I don't suppose so.

ifonly4 · 15/03/2020 18:29

I'm just an MDS but I'm disgusted we've had no guidance on washing hands, keeping the school clean, how to deal with the children's reactions to cornonavirus or possible cases, nothing about protecting ourselves or pay.

My DH knows exactly where he stands. They've been supplied with wipes and sanitizer as working areas change every day, how their pay will be affected, even when they thought it would kick off and pick (they're probably not far off)

My other job, there's sanitizer everywhere, no limit on it's use. Also disinfected wipes for when we feel necessary, again no limit.

FizzyLimes · 15/03/2020 19:16

Schools are rumoured to be closing on Friday

Michaelbaubles · 15/03/2020 19:21

What’s the point in posting a rumour?

Dubdubdubtub · 18/03/2020 14:46

My husband is a TA on a permanent contract and today has been told by his headteacher that’s he might not get paid if the schools shut. He is not off sick so can’t claim sick pay. Bloody great

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/03/2020 17:20

We are def shutting on friday (Wales).

Ilovearcticroll · 19/03/2020 15:04

Dub-that's a dangerous game for his head to play. The school will need staff after this has all blown over.

michaelbaubles · 19/03/2020 15:39

Our principal today clearly said everyone will get paid as usual. FOr those support staff who don't have work to do at home in their usual role, they may be asked to come in (6th form college so no children to supervise but some students may want to use some facilities if we're not in lockdown), do support jobs from home they wouldn't usually do (admin etc) or maybe later work in a school that has been designated as a hub for vulnerable students. But he accepted we can only do our best and not to worry about being paid.
