Is it going to be drastic changes? Or just 'work at home if you can'?

Their reasoning is a joke!

BecauseReasons · 12/03/2020 17:19

Is anyone feeling reassured by this news conference?

I am. Seems like they have solid reasons for what they're doing.

SureTry · 12/03/2020 17:20

My DP has had a dry cough but no fever for 2 days now. We've been going on the basis that he doesn't have a headache or a fever now we don't know what to do. He's been to work on trains into London and the children have been going to school. What are we supposed to do?

Chief Scientific Officer saying the won't close the schools now as it would be hard to keep kids entertained at home for 16 weeks. Wow, very scientific confused
......
I wonder what the kids would say? I know mine would have been de-light-ed!

yatapina · 12/03/2020 17:20

Some of the young people I work with for instance don't have internet access at home and due to quite severe learning difficulties wouldn't know how to use it but they are aware of the phone service, my Great Gran also doesn't have access to and wouldn't know how to use a computer/smart phone.

We live 150 miles away so couldn't help her either so phone is the only available route, I know full well that she's stubborn and wouldn't want to go against the rules of not to phone despite being in the extremely vulnerable category.

bizzybuzzy · 12/03/2020 17:20

Someone I work with called 111 on Wed, 1 hour 15 min wait.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 12/03/2020 17:20

The Government appear to be relying on people and companies to make the decisions for them.

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/03/2020 17:21

Squirrel
I think you are supposed to have a raised temperature as well as the cough to SI. Am I wrong? As for whether or not you should, it sounds as though the 7 days have now passed.

BecauseReasons · 12/03/2020 17:22

Based on what the press conference said, your DH should self isolate for the remaining five days of the seven. You and the kids carry on as normal unless you develop symptoms yourselves.

ssd · 12/03/2020 17:22

What did he say about Scotland there, that our emergency services aren't very good that's why nicola sturgeon is banning large public events from next week??

YgritteSnow · 12/03/2020 17:22

There's no reassurance to be had. This is going to hit like a freight train but it's not going to for a couple of weeks and they cannot give us any definite answers at this time. We are in a holding pattern and the only actions we can take are to attempt to reduce just how difficult it's going to be. I used to be in the forces. I'm used to waiting for shit things to happen and not being able to address them till that point. Maybe that's why I see this.

Myshinynewname · 12/03/2020 17:22

I agree, I think they are hoping that a lot of parents will pull children out without permission, large companies will encourage working from home and people will choose not to socialise as much or travel. So they don't have to be responsible for the effect on the economy.

BecauseReasons · 12/03/2020 17:23

I think you are supposed to have a raised temperature as well as the cough to SI. Am I wrong?

I heard it as either being sufficient.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 12/03/2020 17:24

According to a clinician at work (NHS)

Throat goes first, then fever, then breathing.

I'm not going any big events, but I could still pick it up at work or DD could bring it home.

LovelyBitOfSquirrelJackie · 12/03/2020 17:24

loppy, it’s not about kids getting bored at home. It’s about the impact that would have on parents due to childcare issues and the fact that kids off school are likely to not self isolate but see their friends which totally defeats the object.

defthand · 12/03/2020 17:25

This boils down to:

(a) we don’t trust the British public to be disciplined enough to maintain social distance measures for a prolonged period.

(b) the economy matters more than lives.

The science they’re using is whacked. Study after study on this virus and others has indicated the earlier you implement social distancing measures, the flatter the epidemic curve, the less lives are lost.

Also containment and delay are not discrete phases — as the WHO were at pains to emphasise yesterday. The declaration of a pandemic was not meant to be used as an excuse to give up containment efforts.

This is not the flu, the WHO believes it remains containable. Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea have shown that.

bizzybuzzy · 12/03/2020 17:27

a) we don’t trust the British public to be disciplined enough to maintain social distance measures for a prolonged period.

tbf I don't think we are

yatapina · 12/03/2020 17:27

@ssd that's how I heard that too - Scotland have issues with their public services so they need to be a bit stricter and that the UK need to watch over to make sure they're alright basically.

I've never been pro-indy before but that has pissed even me off 😡

jewel1968 · 12/03/2020 17:28

My DS has a temp but probably gastroenteritis. Will keep him at home for 7 days just in case but what is the advice about whole household. I didn't quite understand. Thanks

Skybluepink123 · 12/03/2020 17:28

Does any of the advice/decisions from this news conference match with WHO advice?

Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 12/03/2020 17:30

I work for the NHS and while there are plans of what to do training on wearing protective clothing has only just started and the vast majority of us haven't been fitted for masks. This in a department where we will be looking after sick, ventilated patients.
We have had 2 cases so far and for some reason they were allowed in A&E.
We are all resigned to catching it ourselves.

LovelyBitOfSquirrelJackie · 12/03/2020 17:30

It is either symptom.

I have just caught up with the first 7days of symptoms being the most contagious period, so I’m fine. I had the TV on pause so was behind on the CMO announcement.

DoubleAction · 12/03/2020 17:30

Absolutely we don't trust the public to quarantine themselves for 12-16 weeks. Although it's not about trust, how would that even be possible?

MrsWolf2 · 12/03/2020 17:31

The elderly are probably going to be even lonelier when some of their friends and relatives are dead.

MzHz · 12/03/2020 17:31

kids off school are likely to not self isolate but see their friends which totally defeats the object.

My DS said that a few kids gathering is a WHOLE lot less of a risk than 1000+ kids all in one place
