Wearing disposable gloves

Something I’ve been thinking over the past couple of days....why aren’t we being advised to wear latex/plastic disposable gloves when out and about?
Surely this would be as good if not better than continuous hand washing or sanitising. For instance, someone travelling on public transport could wear them and then dispose of them when they got to their destination.
Even if you used several pairs a day, your hands would be protected and you would also be less likely to touch your face with plastic gloves on.
Am I missing something as to why this isn’t being advised?

Um unless you change the gloves as often as you wash your hands how would that help? If you think we have a toilet roll supply problem......

Ness1234 · 11/03/2020 20:33

Good point......why isn’t it being suggested? Any medics know?

brighterdays2 · 11/03/2020 20:35

I have got some to wear while travelling to work (I'm in London). Usually don't get a seat and it's crowded, therefore I need to hold a pole. Take them off, then dispose of at work. It's not very eco-friendly but I'd rather not take chances. I would buy some while you can if you're thinking about it.

Cotswoldmama · 11/03/2020 20:38

You'll still be touching things that could be contaminated and then touching your face clothes etc. So wearing gloves will surely make no difference!

DoubleAction · 11/03/2020 20:39

Possibly because the medics need the plastic gloves Ness? Where is this huge supply of gloves supposed to come from?

Only last week we were pilloried for using plastic bags....

LightAsTheBreeze · 11/03/2020 20:42

I was going to wear Marigolds as you can wash them while on your hands and they are quite substantial. I wear them loads at home as I suffer a bit with dermatitis and wouldn’t touch my face with them on

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/03/2020 20:42

I use latex gloves for dyeing my hair and they were sold out in Boots here last week, so I suspect some people are.

brighterdays2 · 11/03/2020 20:44

I bought mine on Amazon last week (50 pairs). They were sent Prime.

Davincitoad · 11/03/2020 20:52

I might start soon. I used to work in a lab and I know for a fact by Brain tells me not to touch face when I have gloves on. Working In a school my hands are raw from Washing. Gloves will come out soon!

TheGreatWave · 11/03/2020 21:38

I got some the other day to go in the car - I was thinking more for use at the petrol pump.

Yeyellow · 11/03/2020 22:14

If everyone starts using gloves then there will be a shortage.
If there’s a shortage then people who NEED gloves to do their JOBS won’t be able to.
Gloves are essential for my job, it would be impossible to do any work without them.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 11/03/2020 22:16

I always have these in the house for dealing with dog diarrhoea. Wore them in the tube today!

Iggly · 11/03/2020 22:17

Just wear normal gloves and wash them regularly.

Clymene · 11/03/2020 22:20

I have gloves anyway. I wore them to work on multiple modes of public transport today. I would hope that if people need them to do their jobs, their employers will be able to get them.

Yeyellow · 11/03/2020 22:20

Also, coming from a microbiologist, washing your hands is essential gloves are not a substitute. Gloves won’t limit your need to wash your hands, you still need to wash them just as much.
Gloves offer a false sense of security and you forget that and touch things you might be more conscious of otherwise, then touch something else, phone, keys, etc, then something else, and before you know it everything is contaminated and you don’t even realise.

CherryPavlova · 11/03/2020 22:21

Gloves are as capable as hands as picking up bugs. The virus comes from hands touching faces. That would still happen with gloves. They wouldn’t be as effective as hand washing and avoiding crowded areas.

Hellodotdotdot · 11/03/2020 22:21

I would wear Marigolds too. Less likely to touch my face if I wear them

Iggly · 11/03/2020 22:24

I was thinking of wearing my gloves on the train or bus when I have to hold the pole. I’ll still hand wash as normal and exercise the usual cautions of not touching the face etc

Miriel · 11/03/2020 22:25

I'm wearing cotton gloves when I take public transport in London. I got a packet of ten pairs cheaply. Easy to wear once and put in with the washing, and I definitely touch my face far less when I have them on.

The idea of everyone wearing disposable gloves just seems really wasteful.

Crunchymum · 11/03/2020 22:25

The Marigolds aren't a bad idea actually!!

You can wash them and yes I'd never touch my face with them on... plus it may give everyone at work a laff Grin

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 11/03/2020 22:26

The reason you don’t want to contaminate your hands is to stop transfer to your mouth, nose and eyes. You are not going to absorb the virus through your skin.

Gloves will perhaps stop you from touching your face while you’re wearing them (although possibly not, from my observations people kind of forget they are wearing them and touch face, pens, phone etc), but they are very difficult to remove without some skin contamination - so you have to wash your hands anyway.

Nat6999 · 11/03/2020 22:28

Latex & silicone gloves can be bought from hairdressers suppliers or DIY shops, hairdressers suppliers come in boxes of 100 for about £7, DIY shops 10 for £1. If it helps anyone.

KaptenKrusty · 11/03/2020 22:28

Great - just more plastic going into landfill then 🙀 fuck the planet...

Just wash your hands - the gloves are the same as your hand touching the rail if you touch your face anyway so can’t see the benefit

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 22:36

You can wash gloves like you wash your hands they are safer.

Crunchymum · 11/03/2020 22:50

How are gloves difficult to remove without contamination? HCP do it all the time?

I have severe psoriasis and contact dermatitis. My hands are cracked, bleeding, have open sores.

I need an alternative to handwashing.
