Thanks - it seems more likely that the UK is heading toward action after the WHO statement yesterday:

GENEVA (AP) — The World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a pandemic and urged aggressive action from all countries to fight it, as U.S. stocks plunged into bear market territory and several American cities joined global counterparts in banning large gatherings.

By using the charged word “pandemic” after shying away from calling it so earlier, the U.N. health agency sought to shock lethargic countries into pulling out all the stops.

“We have called every day for countries to take urgent and aggressive action. We have rung the alarm bell loud and clear,” WHO’s chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Wednesday.

All countries can still change the course of this pandemic. If countries detect, test, treat, isolate, trace and mobilize their people in the response,” he said. “We are deeply concerned by the alarming levels of spread and severity and by the alarming levels of inaction.

Anyone know any good links to explain why the reported death rate varies so much, even in Europe between countries with similar spreads. See stats here www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

This is an interesting read. It discussed actual case numbers compared with known, and death rates.

An actuary's modelling of covid-19 in the UK - read the full thread, there are limitations with the data, but these numbers suggest we'll move to social distancing soon.

New study says coronavirus is most contagious before and during first week of symptoms

People infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the disease, may test positive for the virus both before and after they have symptoms. But a new study of nine people who contracted the virus in Germany suggests that people are mainly contagious before they have symptoms and in the first week of the disease.

Infectious viruses were isolated from about 17 percent of nose and throat swabs and more than 83 percent of phlegm samples during that first week, researchers report March 8 in a study posted at medRxiv.org.

The UK is approx 14 days behind Italy.
We can all do our bit to help slow the spread. Protect your skin, use handcream overnight. Consider showering and washing hair when you come from from work if people have been coughing near you. Try to get a good sleep.

Italy is not an outlier, its a frontrunner. And other nations are set to follow :

We're not trusted to comply with the social distancing rules that other countries are using.

The plan is to essentially wait until the crisis worsens before implementing social distancing. Officials believe the peak of the emergency is still up to 14 weeks away and say behavioural science modelling shows the public will get sick of draconian measures if they are implemented too early.

OP posts:
Wilmalovescake · 14/03/2020 23:50

To be fair, many threads in here seem to suggest they’re not wrong about (lack of) compliance.

OnTheEdgeOfTheNight · 15/03/2020 11:52
