Have you stockpiled?

Sure there have been other posts pertaining to this but I'm starting to be tempted based on the unavvailable items on Sainsurys (online shopping).

Our local supermarkets have had issues with no pasta or loo roll by the afternoon. By the morning they are fully stocked again

Who knows if that will last though, if things get worse and more people get ill we could have problems with supply etc. People who don't have a store are going to be trying to get their weekly shop or extra . Then there will be less available for those on low incomes

Just don't buy extra from the likes of Lidl or asda if you are concerned about people on low incomes. Those of us with little money are unlikely to be trying to get the weekly shop in from m&S or waitrose

CakeAndGin · 11/03/2020 09:42

No, but I do usually keep a small stock of things in.

I did a slightly larger shop at weekend but that’s because I have a relative staying with us this week. I always have dried good (rice, pasta, flour, sugar, lentils) in and replace dry goods when I get to last 25% of the old one. I also try to keep a number of tins in (tomatoes and variety of beans) in. I try to have a stock of pain killers anyway. I usually buy the big packs of toilet roll and again replace when I get down to 2/3 rolls. However, I have counted how many toilet rolls we have and worked out when we will need to buy some - probably in about 2 weeks - so hopefully people will have run out of storage space in their house by then and I’ll be able to buy some but I understand it might be best to buy small packs for a little while to help everyone out.

Snaketime · 11/03/2020 09:46

No, because I can't afford to.

FthisS · 11/03/2020 09:46

We have put aside a big box of food to last us for 3 weeks of not leaving the house. The only thing I've stocked up on is yeast and bread flour because I make 2 loaves a day anyway.

GeraltOfRivia · 11/03/2020 09:47

No specifically but I generally keep some tinned food and dry pasta in the cupboard in case we get struck
With lurgy and no one wants to shop so it was already in the cupboard. I have my regular delivery of Who Gives A Crap loo roll due later this month.

bobstersmum · 11/03/2020 09:47

Does anyone have a really really easy bread recipe I can try please?

Zeusthemoose · 11/03/2020 09:48

Isthistrueor
Yep I agree with this. Very selfish to clear the shelves and leave those that are not able to stockpile unable to do their normal family shop. Usual 'im alright jack' attitude of some.

Porcupineinwaiting · 11/03/2020 09:51

Bollocks. If everyone who can gets a bit extra in now, it is the exact opposite of selfish. Selfish is going and filling your trolley when you or someone in your household is already sick.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 11/03/2020 09:52

And stay away from own brands if you can afford to buy the more expensive stuff.

WellTidy · 11/03/2020 09:53

I've stockpiled but for DS2, who has Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and just won't accept any alternatives to his very very narrow range of foods. He also has other co-morbidities. If at some stage I'm unable to access fresh soft fruit for him, then it will be hard enough to feed him even with the things I've been able to stockpile.

PennyArrowBar · 11/03/2020 09:53

Stock piling, no. Trying to have a little extra in, yes.

We're just off the back of being poor as shit (still are, but about to have a regular wage coming in) so I've been double buying pasta and tins for ages.

Toilet roll is abundant near us but if it came to it, I'd chop up an old think towel and get a bucket and some napisan Grin

bellinisurge · 11/03/2020 09:55

Tin Can Cook by Jack Monroe if you can afford to buy a book.
Some ideas on her website if you can't cookingonabootstrap.com/

Prepping well in advance, a tin at a time if necessary, was not panic buying.

YouDoYou18 · 11/03/2020 10:00

I’ve just gone to do my normal shop and a lot was out of stock. I usually try and stay stock piled anyway because I’m always paranoid my husband will suddenly be off work and we won’t be able to afford food 🤦‍♀️ So I’ve added an extra one, maybe two, of the things we eat very regularly just in case I can’t get it next time, but that’s as much as I’d do.

HoffiCoffi13 · 11/03/2020 10:05

No, but we shop in Costco anyway (family of 5) so always have plenty of toilet roll/pasta/rice etc in the garage (although I ought to check how much we have left!).
I have been putting extra in the food bank though.

Honeyned · 11/03/2020 10:17

Our freezers are normally full as quite a large household. Just grabbed a few extra things that ds1 will eat because he has sn and will only eat certain things.

finn1020 · 11/03/2020 10:49

Nope, not stockpiled. People are weird in Australia, toilet paper is nowhere to be found and hand sanitizer liquid gold, but plenty of tinned foods, long life milk, biscuits, cereals etc everywhere. At least the poor employees in the toilet paper factories that have upped production to 24 hours will get a few weeks off in about two months when the supermarkets can’t sell any toilet paper as we all still have a year’s supply stashed in the house.

sudocremanglaise · 11/03/2020 10:58

Bought in extra fresh stuff to stock the freezer and extra formula (bought latter online from what appears to be abundant stock, didn’t clear the shelves in the supermarket!). We have specific dietary requirements - medical reasons, so breaking them would do us a real mischief - so don’t really want to be caught out (pasta, jar sauce, most tins etc no good for us so at least we’re not depleting the ‘usual’ items). Also have DCs with SN and restrictive feeding so trying to make sure we have enough ‘safe’ foods. But we’re not overflowing, enough for a week or two to help out initially if there’s a reason to isolate.

Baaaahhhhh · 11/03/2020 11:01

Just had my Waitrose delivery. Everything there. Delivery driver said he has a few extra calls, 10 instead of the usual 4 for a Wednesday, but the local store is fully stocked up. Suppliers have ramped up, warehouse has ramped up, nothing is unobtainable, people are just being panicked by the media and Mumsnet Wink.

Great video on loo roll here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/business-51823128/coronavirus-don-t-panic-be-community-minded-says-loo-roll-boss

Baaaahhhhh · 11/03/2020 11:05

Just bought a table top freezer for the olds. They are going to do some ordering from Cook and Wiltshire Food Co. I agree with the pp comment, that if you have money you can afford to get deliveries of expensive items, like Cook. Others are not so fortunate.

ToughGuy · 11/03/2020 11:06

I have slowly stocked up over a few weeks, could kinda see this coming. I think I have enough in for a good couple of months in case of lockdown, shops running low, getting ill.

FthisS · 11/03/2020 11:08

@bobstersmum this is my recipe that makes perfect bread by hand
500g bread flour
3tsp yeast
Salt 2tsp
4tbsp oil

Mix flour, yeast and salt. Make a well pour in oil and slowly add water. Knead for 10mins on a floured surface. Put in a well piled bowl and leave to rise for 1 hour. Knock out the air, transfer to a tin and leave for an hour. Heat oven to 220 and cook for 20-30mins until brown and hollow sounding when you tap the bottom.

PotholeParadise · 11/03/2020 11:18

I imagine it depends on your definition of stockpiling. I don't have a bunker, but I did take steps to ensure I wouldn't be having to buy particular items during the weeks the panic buyers would be doing it.

I am a keen student of human nature, and somewhere to the far left of Marx Wink so I despise panic buyers for the effect they have on the vulnerable. So I bought a couple of weeks' extra soap, toilet tissue and so on a good while back, just so that I wouldn't be placing demand on the supply chains this week.

BiddyPop · 11/03/2020 15:24

THanks Bobstersmum, I look forward to trying it in peace on Friday!!

gamerchick · 11/03/2020 15:35

No, another general prepper here. Always have around 3 months worth in. Keeps shopping bills long term.

However, it's business as usual here. Very few empty shelves. There are some nearly of course but there's no shortage of anything. I was looking at racks of Calpol and cheaper Tesco's own make last night. Plenty bog rolls, lots of pasta. The insanity hasn't hit our area yet.
