What are your work doing?

Didn't see a thread on this but apologies if there is!

Given that it's become more serious and people are more panicked, what are your work doing?

I work in Central London in finance. People with a cold are not even allowed in and must work from home. Anyone who feels uncomfortable can also work from home. All travel to Italy is banned and there's restrictions on Asian countries.

I personally am not worried at all, but I do love working from home!

What about you?

OP posts:
JulietTango · 10/03/2020 11:58

I work in the service sector so there's no option to work from home. There's lots of posters showing how to wash hands effectively and how to minimise the risk

SueEllenMishke · 10/03/2020 11:58

I work at a university.
All international travel has been banned for a month - when it will be re-visited.
We're being asked to consider our personal travel plans over Easter and consider the impact having to be isolated might have on our work.
We've also been asked to put contingency plans in place for work - exams, lectures, events etc and to ensure we can work from home if we close.

ApplesAndCheese · 10/03/2020 11:58

I work in a university in central London. Very high proportion of international students.

They are 'monitoring' the situation.

ie: doing absolutely bugger all.

OhNoNoNoNotThatOne · 10/03/2020 12:03

At present nothing, but information that the WHO and government put out is being taken on board.
We're an office of 6 people. None of us have left the country in the past 6 months and apart from the mother in law of one team member none of us has spent time in the company of anyone who has either.
The city we live in is yet to have a confirmed case, so at present I assume we're not classed as at risk.
We can all sign in remotely and work from home if we need to.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 10/03/2020 12:04

I work at a company that's part office staff, part healthcare workers.

I think they're gearing up to have those of us who can working from home. We've been asked to take our laptops home every night.

Dollywilde · 10/03/2020 12:08

I'm in legal in central London, OP, and our arrangements are pretty much the same as yours. I'm 18 weeks pregnant and trying to make the decision on whether to ask for an extended WFH period. On the one hand, avoiding the train/tube/bus will bring down my risk factors substantially. On the other hand, this could go on for months - what point is there to me taking three weeks' WFH now if at the end of that time we're full in the midst of an outbreak?

bellinisurge · 10/03/2020 12:12

Civil service not central London. A colleague is being tested having shown symptoms.
I am choosing to work from home because I have MS. Any bug can trigger a relapse so I'm kind of used to thinking about it. Office is fine about me doing so.
If the colleague tests negative I'll go back into the office unless and until we are all told not to. Or this issue comes up again.
We have all been told "be prepared to work from home".

Skyejuly · 10/03/2020 12:19

Absolutely nothing Confused

GoldenKirst · 10/03/2020 12:23

All business travel has been banned & meetings are to be done through Skype etc.

Any visitors have to be asked whether they have been to 'hotspots' and if so are not allowed on the premises.

If you have travelled (to any other country) you have to call in the day you are due back and check you are allowed in, if not then self containment (paid) for 14 days!

Work for a large debt collection company (in W Yorkshire) with offices in Europe, only a handful of people that we are aware of are currently self isolating.

cologne4711 · 10/03/2020 12:26

I work part-time for a organisation in London and they've recently moved to (lightweight) laptops for everyone so people take them backwards and forwards every day. They are stress testing the system for homeworking and I suspect will be moving to it before the end of the month.

bengalcat · 10/03/2020 12:28

Work in the NHS and private sector so its business as usual for me .

LaurenSarah22 · 10/03/2020 12:28

I work in the NHS so nothing has changed for me 🤣

Thebearsbunny · 10/03/2020 12:30

The company I work for think it’s just the flu, so business as usual. My DP company have told everyone that they will not be paid if they fall ill or have to self isolate, business as usual etc, even sending an employee on a business trip to Egypt is a couple of weeks (or think they are). Ironically one of the two directors is over 50, a heavy smoker, has diabetes and raised blood pressure, so at risk, though my DP suspects he’ll isolate himself and expect his staff to carry on and run his business. We will see how things pan out, but if no change my DP will be looking for a new job once this is over.

ivykaty44 · 10/03/2020 12:33

One section has put up hand sanitizer machines for everyone to use...interestingly not many public or works seem to be using the 3 units at the main entrance

Another location we’ve been lectured about hygiene but other than soap nothing provided, even though we all share pcs

Another location nothing other than posters telling people to wash hands

Bunnyfuller · 10/03/2020 12:34

Police - intranet messages, posters and paper towels (a few).

We have gloves anyway because some of our customers prefer it 😊.

I think there’s talk of WFH if necessary/possible but I did also hear it needs to be within the existing WFH policy, which is about specific projects. Frontline will just have to get on with it. And even support functions need to be in work some of the time, very little purely IT based.

TheHagOnTheHill · 10/03/2020 12:36

Working in the NHS,work as usual but we're seeing pressures on ordering gloves, masks and gowns as there are supply shortages..This makes sense since globally were using more and it takes time to step up quantities.
I have some marigolds at home in case they're needed.

BiddyPop · 10/03/2020 12:38

Plans being put in place (civil service in capital city - not London) but no changes as yet. Hand sanitisers very prevalent again at entrances and main congregation points. New posters up about handwashing (I think the ones they replaced were from SARS scare). ICT have done an audit on how many people have capacity to work remotely and are stress testing that capacity later this week. Senior management are doing a prioritisation of work exercise to decide on "mission critical" functions.

Lots of meetings are being cancelled internationally. No curtailment on travel yet, but all at each official's own discretion to attend. No policy regarding isolation on return from Italy or other contact areas - but a few are self-isolating where they have capacity to work from home.

DH company have gone into quite a lockdown mode. NO international travel, and even travel locally and big meetings are being discouraged, and staff encouraged to avoid public transport at peak times. All staff already have capacity to WFH, and have been asked to test that it works. He expects that it will be a dictat quite soon to actually WFH, but that it will be pretty much business as usual other than that.

TheresWaldo · 10/03/2020 12:42

We have a complete travel and handshake ban. Anyone who has travelled to affected countries has been asked to self isolate. I have just changed jobs and don't have a security token yet to work from home. I hope it turns up shortly. There is sanitizer and handwashing instructions in the loos, and anti-bacterial spray placed on each floor for us to clean phones/screens etc. The place seems mainly deserted. I can drive to work here though so am quite glad to avoid public transport for the time being.

Yurona · 10/03/2020 12:50

Central london office - told to work from home if we don’t have to be in. I’ll have to be in on Thursday, otherwise working from home. Hand wash + sanitiser is mandatory, all travel banned

Phoenix15 · 10/03/2020 12:56

I work in a pub in semi rural Yorkshire, so far absolutely nothing! There's only a dozen employees though, and no-ones been anywhere that's had a case recently. We're expected to wash hands frequently anyway just for good hygiene.

The manager has said that we will shut if anyone contracts the virus or goes into quarantine. They don't want to do that though as most of us are hourly paid so no sick pay.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 10/03/2020 13:00

I work for a multinational in an office-based role. We had a blanket travel ban except for business-critical travel imposed a couple of weeks ago. Anyone with cold symptoms is to work from home for 48 hours before they and their manager decide whether they should come back in. Anyone who's been in an FCO 'all but essential/no travel' country in the last 14 days has to self-isolate for 2 weeks. There are posters and hand sanitiser pumps everywhere.

Managers can take additional measures for their own departments at their own discretion. Individuals can talk to their manager about WFH if they're particularly worried. I'm immuno-deficient and considering WFH but feel a bit silly.

meredithgrey1 · 10/03/2020 13:16

All international travel stopped, large events (100+ people) stopped and smaller events must be considered and deemed necessary in order to go ahead.

Travel between offices is discouraged. It's quite a flexible office anyway and having meetings via Skype is more common than face to face so it's not been a huge change.
Everyone must take their laptop home every night in case the office is closed at short notice, or you need to self isolate etc.
Internal company webpage specific to CV has been set up and is updated daily with updates, advice and any changes.
Hand sanitiser all over the place.

HoneyBee03 · 10/03/2020 13:24

My work hasn't done anything. We can all work from home if needed but nothing has been mentioned yet. A few funny memes have been shared around the team, that's it.

madcatladyforever · 10/03/2020 13:25

I work in the NHS so isolation pods, hand hygiene etc. my hands are like raw meat at the moment.

Yabadee · 10/03/2020 13:33

I work in Edinburgh airport, and an immunocompromised. I had a phone call from my manager earlier telling me to work from home until he says otherwise. Will re-evaluate in a few weeks, although only expecting it to get worse
