To ask when you think all schools will shut

Due to the corona virus.

Have been talking to a relative and am more worried than I was. Have three dc, one of whom gets ill at the drop of a hat.

Facts emerging from Italy are not great, so why aren’t we in complete shut down now? What is the government waiting for?

Easy for you to say when you're not worried about putting food on the table. Of course people should be off school if they are sick and I would take the time off. But closing schools for goodness knows how long will not help much. Children aren't the most at risk, parents will need to find alternate childcare and tbh it's not going to be that bad for most people. I don't want to lose my home.

Littlescottiedog · 09/03/2020 22:09

I'm not a teacher who works in a state school, I work for a council. If there are no pupils at the schools then there is very little point in my going in. That's why I may not get paid.

We all received an email saying they will let us know about getting paid or not if we have to self-isolate or if schools close.

MamaFlintstone · 09/03/2020 22:11

Yep it’s getting a bit galling to hear from SAHMs with children old enough to entertain themselves how schools must close now. It’s an easy thing to suggest when it’ll have barely any effect on you, not so easy for those who would be unable to work and support their families.

bigchris · 09/03/2020 22:11

Where did i say I didn't ?

If it does happen it'll only be a couple orders

Isn't it because kids are carriers and we're protecting our elderly and the vulnerable in society

I guess we'll learn from how Italy manage it all, they're on lockdown

Beansandcoffee · 09/03/2020 22:11

Bathroom12345 predicted grades is not fair. My son has worked really hard to improve his grades. Others have done nothing so far and will not meet their predicted grades.

bigchris · 09/03/2020 22:11

Weeks not orders Grin

Helpmechangemymindsetplease · 09/03/2020 22:11

There is a report that it is now starting to affect people that are younger.

This is what is coming out of Italy as well.

And as we all know, the NHS is not equipped to deal with all of this.

I think lost earnings should be compensated for by the government, and exams (I have one doing GCSEs and one doing A Levels this year) will be sorted, but don’t take precedence over the kind of situation that has developed in Northern Italy.

Self isolation is counted as normal sick leave

Gertie75 · 09/03/2020 22:14

My sister works in a school and she's been told they are trying to delay until the Easter holidays and are considering extending the break from 2 weeks to 3, possibly 4.

funkybum · 09/03/2020 22:15

My sons secondary school is closed for a week, after a confirmed case. The school the younger siblings go to is still open though

bigchris · 09/03/2020 22:15

@MamaFlintstone on this thread? Who said sahm?

Hope it doesn't turn into a sahm v wohm but usually does on mumsnet Grin

LizzieMacQueen · 09/03/2020 22:15

Re exams - Highers, Nat5s and Advanced Highers in Scotland start end of April too. I checked earlier and SQA, the examining body, haven't updated their CV advice since 3 March.

Think you in England and Wales have better info.

Littlescottiedog · 09/03/2020 22:16

I'm only repeating what was in the email and pointing out that it's not just pupils and parents who will be affected by school closures. Lots of people are worried, especially as we don't know if they will close or not and, if they do, for how long.

Helpmechangemymindsetplease · 09/03/2020 22:16

if parents needed to stay home to take care of their children, the entire country would grind to a halt - because it would include parents who are doctors, energy supply company workers, water supply workers, food delivery drivers and so on.

I know Sad. Communities will have to come together to help people where they can - with childcare etc.

Not everyone gets sick pay though. Some people are self employed or on 0hour contracts.

GabsAlot · 09/03/2020 22:16

I was thinking that greenyulip wont it just spread round more

manicinsomniac · 09/03/2020 22:16

Brown76 I really, really hope you are right! I've got an £11,000 school production on 20th and 21st that we've been rehearsing for months. The children (and staff!) have worked so hard. I know it's not life and death but I will be so gutted if they can't perform. Even more so if we spend the whole weekend on the set build and technical rehearsal then close and spend the next two days taking it all down again with no performance! Can't postpone as other groups will have the scenery booked.

But I'm aware that's selfish, I guess. Just makes me sad.

Fatted · 09/03/2020 22:18

Never hopefully.

Hollyhead · 09/03/2020 22:18

Just because schools close won’t necessarily mean that exams won’t get sat - I can see schools opening for exams still but other pupils to stay away. It’s about lowering risk not zero risk.

Theukisgreatt · 09/03/2020 22:18

@PeppaisaBitch I was talking about teachers

ElderAve · 09/03/2020 22:18

If communities pull together for childcare doesn't that defeat the object of closing the schools?

MamaFlintstone · 09/03/2020 22:20

on this thread? No IRL and on others! Ok not just SAHM then, anyone who doesn’t work or who can work from home easily and has teenagers who don’t actually need looking after!

If DD’s nursery closes we are screwed. And SSP is a joke; £95 a week wouldn’t touch the sides.

PeppaisaBitch · 09/03/2020 22:20

Theukisgreatt I work in schools but am self employed if schools close I don't work. I don't work I don't get paid. I don't get paid my children can't eat and we lose our home.

Helpmechangemymindsetplease · 09/03/2020 22:20

Maybe. More manageable small groups. Or each household that can to look after a small group of kids.

Littlescottiedog · 09/03/2020 22:21

@Theukisgreatt Not all teachers are on the same contract, though. You mean teachers covered by STPCD will get sick pay if they self-isolate.
