I don't understand why people are still allowed to leave and enter back into the country without any checks. Surely being an island we should be able to contain it better then most!!

Two cases in pembrokeshire, and the school allowed 100s of children to go to euro disney on friday and a case has been confirmed on a park assistant today. My son shares a taxi with a girl who has gone and she is due back today. He has brittle asthma, is on 4 lots of medication and I'm really concerned now.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 09/03/2020 14:03

I just don't understand why travelling is allowed especially to infected countries without any checks or quarentine when they return.

The UK is an infected country.

Devlesko · 09/03/2020 14:06

Because the aim is for 80% to become infected with low to moderate cases.
Our government has never been interested in containment because of parents working and childcare, don't ya know.
If we'd have locked down like Wuhan did, we would have had fewer cases, and less during the managed peak the government have planned for Summer.
If you don't like the plans, which I don't, you need to make your own arrangements.

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/03/2020 14:07

Most countries are affected now. Including the UK.

FthisS · 09/03/2020 14:07

I'm sat here really anxious now. It really should be completely stopped. I'm wondering where I stand on keeping my son home, he also has asd and is in a class of 11 and does completely different lessons so it's not as though he is missing anything crucial. He is so unwell, he has just fonished a 7 day course of steroids he takes azithromycin because his immune system is so compromised.

ChristmasFlint · 09/03/2020 14:11

Because the economy is king and we have a conservative government that are perfectly fine letting the vulnerable die.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 09/03/2020 14:14

I know we are infected now but still reasonably low compared to some places. And we should be able to contain it better by reducing the risk.

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 09/03/2020 16:26

So you would set your arbitrary limit on flights at 'wherever is more infectious than the UK'?

Dickorydockwhatthe · 09/03/2020 16:29

Well if its about containing and reducing the risks then maybe we should!!

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/03/2020 16:34

There are also costs to doing it. We always balance risk and benefit. The costs are not just financial. I live in another country to my elderly parents. Some children (minor children) have parents in other countries. People travel for work. It's a huge thing to close down a country. It's not just holidays. You are restricting people's freedom, that should be a very well considered decision.

ShanghaiDiva · 09/03/2020 17:20

Do you mean testing everyone who returns to the UK?
With an incubation period of up to 14 days even testing everyone will not prevent an increase in cases. One solution is that anyone returning has to self isolate for 14 days even if they have no symptoms. This is what China has put in place to try and prevent a second wave of infections.

undead · 09/03/2020 17:44

We are going to Rome for Easter. There is infected people here too.

notimagain · 09/03/2020 17:50

So with reference to flights

  1. Which countries are would be on the “no flights to and from list”..

And then

2.How do you address the issue of people from these countries entering the U.K. via a connecting flight?

e.g. travelling from Italy to Germany to the U.K.?

Dickorydockwhatthe · 09/03/2020 19:37

Yes maybe self isolate on return, advising essential travel only. Surely they can be doing more to contain it whilst in its earlier stages rather then get to crisis point then have a lock down situation like they have in Italy.

OP posts:
CokeEnStock · 09/03/2020 19:47

We were going to Italy at Easter, but without DD who is meant to be on a camp. The risk of potential further lock downs or flight cancellations means we cancelled. We can't get stuck anywhere. No idea whether the camps might yet get cancelled either. I think everyone needs to be a bit unselfish. No unnecessary travel or mixing in huge groups. Hand washing etc.

Devlesko · 11/03/2020 13:04

Because the economy is king and we have a conservative government that are perfectly fine letting the vulnerable die.

Don't forget the selfish too, those going on holiday are more at risk in many places.
I think gov think if you're stupid enough they aren't going to stop you.
I'm sure rescue missions will stop soon as it's not like people don't know.

just because your flight is travelling, doesn't mean you have to be on it.

roarfeckingroar · 11/03/2020 13:11

I think you're being unreasonable. Flights to Iran and Italy, fine. The economy and global business needs to continue.

inwood · 11/03/2020 13:22

Affected.

I totally agree with you.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 29/03/2020 13:55

I still don't know why flights are still continuing.

OP posts:
Seventyone72seventy3 · 29/03/2020 13:58

Well it's just about everywhere now so that horse has bolted.

maddy68 · 29/03/2020 13:59

This government is a shambles. I flew back last week from a high risk area and honestly no checks, not even a leaflet given to me telling me to wash my hands. Shambles

Dickorydockwhatthe · 29/03/2020 14:04

They should have contained at the start to look least give them time to prepare. They should have stopped non essential travel or told people to isolate for 14 days.

Peregrina · 29/03/2020 14:14

Some flights are continuing to get people back home. As one who very nearly got stuck abroad for an indefinite time, and has elderly relatives back home, I am jolly grateful for that.

I too came back from a high risk country - no health checks on landing. There was an announcement on the plane about hand washing and keeping your distance.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 29/03/2020 14:33

I definitely agree for those needing to come back home, but checks and isolating should be done.
