Bump

Presumably after it’s happened?

Tonz · 09/03/2020 09:25

Hopefully as soon as its done

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/03/2020 09:25

We didn't find out anything after the last big one until the day after. I think that they probably need to work on messaging after each one to ensure that things are being said in the right way and to put systems in place, ready to implement whatever it is they say is needed.

AlternativePerspective · 09/03/2020 09:26

Whatever is decided, it’s not going to be an immediate thing i.e. events may e cancelled but those are in the future, schools will likely be closed as of a set date (if they are) It’s not going to be a mass exodus from society to home iyswim. There will be time to implement all measures.

Hugglespuffed · 09/03/2020 09:28

Thanks all.
I know it won't be an immediate thing. I more want to know what is likely to happen in regards to travel.

This!

It's not as if very much came out of that first Cobra meeting, really, is it?

Helenj1977 · 09/03/2020 09:59

What time is it?

onalongsabbatical · 09/03/2020 10:02

It's 'this morning'. They really don't want to give us clear info, do they?

GrumpyMug2 · 09/03/2020 10:08

It starts at 11am, I think we will know by tonight. I bet they don't close schools. But will ban large gathering and urge WFH where possible

AncientEvil · 09/03/2020 10:23

I bet they do sweet FA. They do not seem to grasp what is happening in Italy tbh, too concerned with protecting the economy

Kazzyhoward · 09/03/2020 10:28

366 dead now in Italy

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51793619

If the UK doesn't start taking it seriously, we'll be next. We need travel bans into/out of Italy and other badly affected areas immediately. We also need to stop large gatherings.

And for God's sake, people need to start washing their sodding hands - this morning in the supermarket toilets, neither of the two women made any attempt to wash their hands after using the loo. No excuses - plenty of hot water and soap at the sinks - they didn't even look! I followed them out and they both went straight into the store with their trolleys - I had hoped (naively) that they may have been going to use hand gel instead, but no, nothing!

Personal hygiene in the UK is absolutely shocking.

NeckPainChairSearch · 09/03/2020 10:31

Just washing hands will be fine. No need to do anything that risks the economy or involves making major decisions. Luckily, we all have a quirkily British immunity that viruses sort of respect because we're so, so, so globally important.

If we could all just Britishly hang in there, intoning a series of meaningless, Dad's Army-style soundbites, while maintaining a foppish stiff-upper-lip about a bit of natural survival of the fittest, that would be great, thank you.

AncientEvil · 09/03/2020 10:33

All this crap about the NHS being "fully prepared" Yeah right, I work in it, say no more!

madcatladyforever · 09/03/2020 10:37

Me too, first I've heard and I work in it too. maybe in the big cities.

JudyCoolibar · 09/03/2020 10:51

It does seem a bit irrational to be looking at banning large gatherings (many of which are in the open air) whilst still running crowded trains, buses and underground trains.

HonestlyItsFine · 09/03/2020 10:51

The NHS is in no way prepared for anything. It's barely coping now.
Sensible measures at this stage would be encouraging people who can to work from home (takes many people out of the cities and away from others).

Kazzyhoward · 09/03/2020 11:28

Not irrational at all. Large gatherings aren't essential, public transport is. Even at open air events, there are usually confined spaces such as the refreshments counters/seating areas etc, plus usually large queues in & out, not to mention people stood/sitting very close to eachother for 2/3 hours. I was at a football match a couple of weeks ago on a very windy day, a guy in front sneezed and a glob of phlem flew back into the face of someone sat next to me. I'd far rather miss a footie match or delay a pop concert than get coronavirus and spread it around my vulnerable family/friends. Public transport is a necessity so best to get fewer people using it, i.e. work from home, avoid unnecessary travel, so those who do need it (emergency services and other essential workers) are less likely to get the virus.

backtonormalname · 09/03/2020 11:37

If they have not put aside their petty rivalries and invited Sadiq Khan to this one I will lose all faith. London really needs so much better measures for this.
I hope they can read Italian and have taken on board what happens when containement fails and people start dying in large numbers because there are not the facilities to look after them - there are heartbreaking statements out there from Italian medics who are having to ration care

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/03/2020 11:49

It isn't irrational at all to ban large gatherings while keeping other stuff going. It's all about slowing the virus. We probably can't contain it now, but we can slow it down so it overwhelms systems less.

Kazzyhoward · 09/03/2020 11:49

London really needs so much better measures for this.

So you don't think the majority of the population living and working outside London deserve better then? Then people wonder why London Centric politicians got a kicking at the last election!

Dusty01 · 09/03/2020 11:52

So you don't think the majority of the population living and working outside London deserve better then?

But no where else in the UK (cities included) is as packed and dirty as London is it? At the moment London does need special treatment otherwise once Covid-19 takes off here there will be no stopping it.

NeckPainChairSearch · 09/03/2020 12:00

That would be pretty bad optics imo. Almost as bad as shutting parliament but not schools.

HonestlyItsFine · 09/03/2020 12:01

Also if London becomes a hot zone, it's gong to spread FAST- so many people commute in and out daily or visit as tourists from all over. It's not the same as a town in the NE that has a limited number of non-locals passing though. It just isn't.
Major cities, like London (and including places like Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester etc too) carry way more risk.
