Is anyone avoiding the gym due to *you know what?

I usually have to motivate myself to go. I use the machines and mats. I currently have free time and want to go, but am a little afraid. Could wipe everything I use before and after with Dettol wipes, and obviously was my hands well. But I'm aware that people sweating on machine seats, might make it more of a risky area. Plus, my gym is definitely attracted by people who travel a lot. Think city- centre, corporate hub gym.
Any thoughts? I don't want to be this anxious about normal life for the next 18 months. Do I need to get a grip and carry on as usual?

Oh. I thought 'you know what' was extreme laziness, in which case I was going to say 'yes, I am' :)

Completely up to you but are you prepared to miss out on life for the next however many months?
I’m not!

Extreme laziness or time of the month even? Please, no more virus threads. If you're that worried then stay at home until it blows over.

We're just moving this over to the right topic now. Flowers

No. I was there on Friday. When you consider how many of the dumbbells, kettlebells, rowing machine handles etc etc are covered in germs, piss and general filth from those who don't wash their hands anyway, you'd better just exercise (no pun intended) the same levels of caution you always would.

They're infectious places at the best of times, unfortunately.

Actually yes I am, I really enjoy the gym and I am missing it this week but I feel avoiding right now is sensible. Gyms are germfests at the best of times.

Great excuse to do free Youtube workouts at home or go for a run with the neighbours at the park.

I’m currently still swimming - the amount of chlorine used would probably nuke any germs. Even after a hot shower I still have a faint whiff of chlorine.

Hmm, mixed responses, but mainly everyone is getting on with life, which is what I want to do. Sorry for another thread and didn't realise there was a particular place to put it. To be honest, reading MN and the news this weekend has made me feel a bit anxious, which I didn't feel before. So I'm going to avoid reading for a while and try to go back to business as normal, with increased hand-washing only.

I agree that UK centres use a lot of chlorine, so that's probably a good activity to continue with. Will definitely increase free YouTube yoga and a get in the habit of a jog in the park.

No. And I am pleased to say there has been NO frantic anti-bac wiping of bikes after spinning or weights after pump.

Not at all - go three times a week and just wash my hands and they are providing sanitizer so after working on the equipment I use that or go wash my hands. I also use gloves on the weight machines. Trick is to not touch your face until you've washed your hands.
I've noticed some elderly people are not going to pilates though.

No i was there yesterday and and again this morning but we were reminded after the weights class that gyms are dirty places and to was our hands. There's a noticible change in people's behaviour at my gym. more hand washing and use of the sanitiser plus staff more frequently cleaning the equipment.

Went to the gym last week and intend to go this week too. My gym provides wipes and hand sanitiser anyway. I am also going on holiday next weekend and flying there (as long as guidelines don't alter between now and then. I will be taking my own soap in case I'm somewhere where there isn't any. I would take hand sanitiser for using at the airport or on the plane - but i can't get hold of any! Hopefully the airport and plane will have put their own supplies out for travellers use.

I am avoiding my normal exercise due both to risk of infection on the premises and because of the risks of too much exercise exertion putting my heart under pressure while I'm slightly unwell. One of the bigger risks to fit people is exercising in the early stages of the virus and increasing pressure on the heart.

My gym sent a notice out to wash your hands on entering and exiting the gym. Which I found mildly amusing because all the machines are sticky from other people's gunk and there's never any soap in the toilets

I haven't noticed either my local gym or exercise classes being any less busy than usual. And I am in an area where we have people with corona virus.

I’m not going but I am in a higher risk group. I’m wfh for the foreseeable too. PHE advice for someone like me is to avoid catching it, so I’m going with that.

Unless you are particularly vulnerable I would carry on as usual but ensuring you practice good hygiene. So don't touch your face while there, especially after using equipment, and then wash your hands properly with soap and water when you're finished.

No, I am not avoiding the gym. If I were in a high risk group (elderly male with pre-existing health condition) I would.

Personally, I still go to the gym 6 days per week,
but I wash hands well and use their disinfectant hand gel
skip the coffee bar natters and shower only at home

I'm 63, so in a higher risk group statistically

A doctor on Cosmo commented on the gym and said that CV19 is not transmitted by sweat

So gyms have basically the same hazards as any other space with other people

  • sneezing or coughing with 6 feet of you
  • droplets on equipment getting onto your hands and then onto your face

Still going 3 times a week. Wash hands as I arrive don’t touch face etc do work out then wash hands on leaving.
Exercising is good for MH especially now. Be space aware when there.
Going tomorrow Wednesday and Friday.

Ah, good to know that a scientist confirmed it isn't transferred via sweat.
Highly agree that exercising is good for mental health, so we should continue if we can.
