but why loo paper?

Because people are considering what will happen if they have to self-isolate, and so can't leave their homes

Namechangexyz1 · 08/03/2020 16:31

Why is no one panic buying baby food and milk.

You'll be able to wipe your arse but not feed your baby.

That is the toilet roll aisle

Playdoughbum · 08/03/2020 16:33

Prepping isn’t panic buying. Things bought weeks ago will have been reordered and replaced. It’s the last few days that have cleared the shelves.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 08/03/2020 16:35

No. The preppers warned this would happen and there would be a point where people started panic buying and the shelves emptied.

ivykaty44 · 08/03/2020 16:41

The peepers don’t panic but, nor do they buy in bulk. Prepped stick up slowly over many weeks and months.

I’m not a preppier, but I don’t work on a Justin time system either. I have enough in my cupboards to last at least 3 weeks without shopping or going hungry.

I haven’t been in a supermarket since last Wednesday, when I purchased some baking ingredients & saw everyone panic buying - so I haven’t been back

Preppers are so easily led by others. They start with buying a few tins of tomatoes for their cupboards and the next minute they are droning on about "bugging out", knives and hiding gold sovereigns due to getting swept up in online prepping "communities"

nellodee · 08/03/2020 16:45

Aren't preppers, by their very definition, the ones who do things first?

SauvignonBlanche · 08/03/2020 16:45

The photo above is from Waitrose, as is this one that I took this morning
I saw plenty in ASDA earlier (though I didn’t buy any) so maybe it’s a middle class thing Hmm

is the lack of loo paper and soap mumsnet's fault?
ifonly4 · 08/03/2020 16:46

My toilet roll stash was prepped one at a time 2-6 weeks ago. Went to Tesco's yesterday and there was no need to panic - I bought mine when there was plenty on the shelves for every one.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/03/2020 16:47

Which is entirely harmless. Unlike people who don't prep, scoff at those who do then panic buy when they realise they should have, you know, prepared.

In places where there are fires and floods, people think it's irresponsible not to be able to be entirely responsible for yourself for minimum 72 hours. Turns out anywhere can have an emergency.

MortyFide · 08/03/2020 16:51

There was plenty of bread, fart roll etc at Asda (Portsmouth) earlier but there was large crowd lunging like vultures at the passata shelf.

I only saw one lady with a big pile of freezable ready meals, long life milk and bog roll, but to be fair she was alone and advancing in years so her approach seemed sensible.

Other than that the shop was busy, but no one appeared to obviously be panic buying. Didn't get to see what the soap aisle looked like.

Huntlybyelection · 08/03/2020 16:52

I don't think it was caused by Mumsnet but there is certainly a shortage in every place I've been. Our local co-op now has posters up saying they will limit purchases of soap, toilet roll and cleaning products to 3 per person.

When we get snowed in and delivery trucks can't get through, they have to limit milk and bread to max 2x each per customer (and once 1x each per customer) so as to make sure everyone has fair opportunity.

I did put some pasta (shelf almost empty) and soap in the food bank collection though - I can afford to buy it and afford to get to the shops to buy it, it's only fair that I share that relative luxury.

crustycrab · 08/03/2020 17:00

You've misunderstood prepping. This is panic buying. Preppers don't need to

SharpieInThe · 08/03/2020 17:02

You'll be able to wipe your arse but not feed your baby.

You think this prepper hasn't got enough baby milk to take them up to 1 yr old? You underestimate my power.

I haven't bought toilet roll in months.

Preppers don't panic.

Get it roun' ya.

Livpool · 08/03/2020 17:03

Heard about panic buying but not seen anything in the 4 supermarkets I have been in the last few days

dementedma · 08/03/2020 17:05

Can’t get hand gel, but had no problems today buying loo roll, soap etc in Lidl. People are selfish and greedy. buy what you need for this week/2 weeks, and stop denying other people the products they need too.

ivykaty44 · 08/03/2020 17:10

Loo roll made in China
Loo roll factory shut due to corona virus
People add up loo roll factory shut (or rumour) therefore shortages will occur

So people go and but loo roll, which makes others buy loo roll and then others see and think ah we must but loo roll as there is going to be a shortage

Now there is a shortage anyway as everyone panicking is buying loo roll

Twooter · 08/03/2020 17:13

What crustycrab said. If everyone had prepped properly there would be no panic buying.

belay · 08/03/2020 17:18

I am in a large city and there is loo roll in the shops 🤔

LynetteScavo · 08/03/2020 17:19

I thought it was because all the paper pulp was going to be used to make face masks?

Twinkle1208 · 08/03/2020 17:26

Getting ridiculous now. I work at a supermarket and have seen people literally clearing the shelves of toilet rolls Daily!! Had a dear little old lady who asked me where the toilet roll is, took her round and shelves were completely empty!!! I’ve been trying to get hold of ONE soap as mine has actually run out in the kitchen but it’s like gold dust as everyone has gone mad and are panic buying.

DressingGownofDoom · 08/03/2020 17:28

But toilet roll isn't made in China? It's made in the UK.

Wildthyme · 08/03/2020 17:30

My local Superdrug has hand sanitiser in, only 2 per customer though.

Went shopping today and most places were fully stocked. We have no cases of CV yet so that probably helps.
