The thing that most people don’t understand about the Coronavirus

I am not panicking about the Coronavirus but I am getting a bit annoyed at the people who keep saying that it’s not a big deal. What people don’t seem to understand is that:

  • even 1% is actually quite a nigh mortality rate;
  • it’s been estimated that while MOST people get mild symptoms about 10% ( could be higher ) need medical intervention;
  • if it gets out of control and 10% of people who get it need medical help, there is no way that the NHS could cope.

The NHS is already very stretched but it can just about cope with dealing with medical emergencies. If there was a sudden dramatic increase, there is no way it would be able to cope. There is no health care system in the world that can cope with larger numbers of people suddenly getting sick.

@AutumnRose1 I think the culture of presenteeism, school attendance targets plus a large dollop of 'my child must not miss out' has a lot to answer for here.

80% mild/moderate does NOT mean what you may think

WHO report:

https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-report.pdf

Page 12::
80% mild/moderate disease
13.8% severe disease. These patients need oxygen.
6.1% critical. These patients will die without very extensive hospital care.

Page 13 shows about half are mild and half are "moderate"
where Moderate is defined as 'has pneumonia'

So COVID statistics breakdown, pages 12-13, is:

40% mild
40% pneumonia
13.8% severe disease - need oxygen
6.1% critical - need ICU

Those figures are of those who have tested positive? Is that right?

If a significant proportion of those with mild symptoms and most of those who are asymptomatic are not tested (which is likely)?then they won't be included in those figures. That suggests it's a worst case scenario to me.
