AIBU to want to book a holiday?

Are people still booking holidays? Dp and I just had a disagreement over our family summer holiday. We were hoping to book yesterday but he's now saying we shouldn't because of coronavirus and the Greek island we were looking at could be the next affected blah blah blah. I can totally see where he's coming from but feel really disappointed because it's something to look forward to. We were looking at a popular resort and hotel which might book up. We wouldn't be going until August. Is he right to be cautious or should we be just carrying on as normal?

Are the rest of you still booking holidays abroad for the coming months?

We’re waiting a couple of weeks until holidays are being nearly given away and then booking. All these cancellations are music to my ears.

Chocolateandamaretto · 07/03/2020 15:55

We’re booked to go to Greece in August. Unless the foreign office say not to travel then we will be going!

beckywiththeshithair39 · 07/03/2020 15:57

Does anyone really know what the outcome or ending of this is meant to be? Surely it won't just disappear? Be September it could be affecting a lot more countries.

If I already had a holiday booked I wouldn't be cancelling it but I'm just wondering if now is a sensible time to be booking a new one.

Well there’s the people who don’t give a damn about others and those who do.

It’s up to you which camp you fall into.

MadamFlutterby · 07/03/2020 15:59

we've booked already for April, may, July and December.

all booked last year.

wish we hadn't been so proactive tbh.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 07/03/2020 16:01

Nobody knows the outcome.

Most probably we are only about 2 weeks behind Italy, so whatever is happening there will be happening here in 2 weeks

We have a holiday booked for May but expect we won’t go (don’t need to pay hotel until 5 days before we go, do I’ll decide later)

TW2013 · 07/03/2020 16:02

get ill before or during the holiday then we wouldn't be covered

Surely that is what travel insurance is for. I imagine by the summer it will have peaked or dissipated.

FrenchyQ · 07/03/2020 16:03

Myself and DH were going to go inter-railing the end of July, thankfully hadnt booked anything yet, so will see how all this pans out really

I dont think anyone knows for certain, but the modelling being reported online in various places is that it will have peaked by May-ish. I'm going with that for now, being an optimist!

Geoffreythecat · 07/03/2020 16:07

Why wouldnt you be covered on if you fell ill on holiday OP? As long as you have decent insurance and there was no advice to not travel, surely you would be covered.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 07/03/2020 16:08

We're just moving this over to the Coronavirus topic.

user1497207191 · 07/03/2020 16:12

There's a cruise firm started offering cancellation refunds to encourage people to book and then only cancel if necessary. Great idea and I think lots of other firms/travel firms/airlines will have to do the same. Far better to have people booking and a few cancelling than no one booking. I think all this "non cancellable" hotel booking etc has gone too far and is putting people off.

Titsywoo · 07/03/2020 16:16

We're booked to go to the Netherlands in August and will still be going unless we are told not to! Just booked Cornwall for the Easter hols.

Figgygal · 07/03/2020 16:23

When would holiday be for?
If it’s later in year I’d just crack on

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 07/03/2020 16:34

I’d read ghe virus will take 3 months to peak then 3 months go subside but until theres a vaccine we’re stuck with it circulating. China is seeing back flow cases as citizen travel abroad and catch the virus, taking it home as a souvenir. Spanish flu happened in 3 waves. Theres so many unknowns. It could be controlled and fizzle out. If I were in the market for a holiday I’d make sure it was covered by hefty insurance covering pandemic/illness cancellation and maybe even a cancellation agreement with the holiday company. If not I wouldn’t be booking.

KenDodd · 07/03/2020 16:40

Have you checked how much travel insurance costs and what it will cover?
I think I'd do that first.

Delatron · 07/03/2020 16:43

I’ve holidays booked for April and May that I won’t cancel.

We’ve held off booked our July one as it was going to be ££ and I don’t want to risk not being able to go (through illness I guess)

But will book something last minute when we see how things pan out.

ineedaholidaynow · 07/03/2020 16:54

I am assuming travel insurance premiums are going to go up hugely or they will excluding Coronavirus, as it will be too costly to the insurance companies soon.

Have any of you booking summer holidays got children who are supposed to be taking exams this year? There is talk that if schools are closed for a length of time, exam dates may be shifted or a second sitting may be done in the summer holidays. Obviously nothing is certain yet.

LittleSwede · 07/03/2020 16:55

The word from the CMO Chris Witty the other day seemed to be that once it's widespread across Europe they won't have any travel restrictions and it will be down to the individual to judge if the country they travel to has a 'robust' enough health care system in case you fall ill when abroad.

So if you don't fancy bring unwell in Greece (perhaps bearing in mind the refugee crisis as well with Turkey opening their borders) then maybe rethink or at least research on hospitals on the island.

welshfishwife · 07/03/2020 17:04

I don't think I'd book anything right now. We've already booked parts of our summer holiday so I'm hoping we can go OR claim back on travel insurance / credit card if we can't. We were supposed to be going away in three weeks too but we've cancelled that as my DF and DM were going to look after the DC's when we were away. They live in a sleepy rural village, we're in a big city with active cases. I want them to stay away from here to try and keep themselves safe so no trip for us Sad

spiffing · 07/03/2020 17:04

I did read somewhere that it's possible that travel insurance may not cover a cancellation as it's “designed to cover unforeseen events,” and Covid-19 is now considered a “foreseen event,” unless you purchased it before a specific date. I was due to be going on a family holiday to Tenerife in April but I've cancelled, luckily I didn't lose much money. I'm a nurse and I personally felt I just couldn't take the risk of being quarantined on my return, and not being able to do my job, or of passing the virus on to vulnerable people. I'm by no means panicking about the risk but I equally feel that we should be doing our very best to contain it.

Verily1 · 07/03/2020 17:11

I’m holding off on booking.

It’s not the virus it’s the thought of being quarantined like those poor people trapped in Tenerife. That sounds hellish.

Geoffreythecat · 07/03/2020 17:14

DH bought travel insurance yesterday and is covered for Covid 19.

GreekOddess · 07/03/2020 17:17

I'm surprised by these responses. My holidays are booked this year if the flights take off we will be on them!

sewingsinger · 07/03/2020 17:27

We are last minute bookers and I am holding off for now to see how this pans out. If I do book anything I will ensure I am insured up to my eyeballs ie. read all the small print. I would also not book to travel anywhere that doesn't have a good healthcare system or where I am likely to get stranded and it not be easy to get home. It's a shame because so many won't be travelling it's a great time to be away without the crowds.
