AIBU to want to book a holiday?

Are people still booking holidays? Dp and I just had a disagreement over our family summer holiday. We were hoping to book yesterday but he's now saying we shouldn't because of coronavirus and the Greek island we were looking at could be the next affected blah blah blah. I can totally see where he's coming from but feel really disappointed because it's something to look forward to. We were looking at a popular resort and hotel which might book up. We wouldn't be going until August. Is he right to be cautious or should we be just carrying on as normal?

Are the rest of you still booking holidays abroad for the coming months?

I have 3 holidays booked- Easter, July and October.
All booked last year.
I wish we hadn’t now so I would hang fire if I were you.

PumpkinP · 07/03/2020 15:03

I have a holiday booked for September. I wouldn’t book one if you haven’t already. Wish I hadn’t booked this one tbh.

SnoozyLou · 07/03/2020 15:05

We have a holiday booked for September. Doubt we'll be going. I wouldn't book one now, no.

Khione · 07/03/2020 15:07

So long as you have appropriate insurance in place and are happy to go so long as the foreign office isn't advising against then why not book.

Need to carefully check the insurance though to make sure you are covered as I'm sure some will be putting in avoidance clauses if they can.

beckywiththeshithair39 · 07/03/2020 15:07

Really? Wow. My argument was that if it gets too bad in the particular area the holiday will be cancelled and we will get our money back. But if we decide not to travel or get ill before or during the holiday then we wouldn't be covered so I understand his worries but I just hadn't really banked on it getting this serious so soon

Personally I'd wait simple because I think lots of people will be feeling like your DP and there will be bargains galore in a few weeks' time, unless of course all the airline have gone bust!

I terms of the booking, if you book a package and the govt advice is not to travel to that region, the tour operator will have to refund you. If there is a risk, it's that you end up quarantined away from home, either with or without the illness.

The altruistic thing to do would be to book anyway and support the struggling tour operators and airlines

itsbetterthanabox · 07/03/2020 15:09

Why are you all doubting you'll go on ones in September?

ElderAve · 07/03/2020 15:11

If this isn't all over long before September we have much bigger problems than cancelled holidays Snoozy

DesLynamsMoustache · 07/03/2020 15:13

We are going away in July and I'm not really expecting to cancel. It's to mainland Europe (not Italy Grin) and I'm not really concerned about it. We only wouldn't go if FCO advice said not to, and in that case we made sure we would be covered anyway.

bengalcat · 07/03/2020 15:15

I've holidays in Europe for end March and July . Still going . Only thing that would lead me to cancel would be if the FO advises against travel and / or destinations crop up on the list of countries to self isolate on return and this is known prior to date of travel .

timeforawine · 07/03/2020 15:17

I'm going away May, Sept and November and looking forward to all of them. Booking now things seem to be cheaper, if it got cancelled the travel company would need to refund you.
Make sure you have insurance, ideally one that covers for cancellations in the event of advice not to travel

FickleTickle · 07/03/2020 15:21

Just booked one. I can't see why I'd not. You've got to keep going until you can't.

Seeitsortit · 07/03/2020 15:25

I have one booked for July, dd is away with guides.......if hers gets cancelled and mine doesn’t I’m screwed as it’s adults only!

HoldMyLobster · 07/03/2020 15:36

I'm about to book a trip to the UK in May.

Flights are very cheap right now, and the US airlines (not sure about European) are allowing free ticket changes for up to 12 months so if necessary I'll delay the trip.

IloveJudgeJudy · 07/03/2020 15:38

I just booked a long weekend in Barcelona

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/03/2020 15:42

I already booked them last year. One in the UK at Easter and one abroad in July. I'm not cancelling unless official government advice is not to travel.

Darbs76 · 07/03/2020 15:42

Definitely wouldn’t book now. I’m waiting

99victoria · 07/03/2020 15:45

We're off to Costa Rica on Monday - can't wait! Really looking forward to some sunshine and warmth. We're both 60ish but have no intention of locking ourselves away.

We also have a Greek Island holiday booked for July and a trip to France for September. We are planning to go on all of them. My daughter is supposed to be going to Thailand in a couple of weeks and has had her flight cancelled. We are helping her look for replacement flights.

I can't bear all the over-reaction and dramatics going on online. Fortunately, in real life, most of the people I know seem to be carrying on as normal!

MT2017 · 07/03/2020 15:45

DS1 is due on a school trip in April, I am wondering if that will be cancelled.

We are all going away August and I will be beyond pissed off if that doesn't happen...need sunshine...

FizzyPink · 07/03/2020 15:47

I can’t see why not when there are over 200 cases in the UK now anyway. I’m hoping to pick up a bargain for one of the May bank holiday weekends for a couple of days somewhere sunny

Nandocushion · 07/03/2020 15:47

We're due in Italy in ten days...! Not sure that will happen, but I have zero worries about summer holidays going anywhere. I'd book now while it's cheap.

SnoozyLou · 07/03/2020 15:50

@ElderAve Where did I say we wouldn't?

Spare me your patronism. You can do as you please for me.

RedRec · 07/03/2020 15:51

I was going to book a family holiday somewhere in the Canary Islands just before the cases were diagnosed in Tenerife. Very glad I didn't and would not dream of booking it now. We are going to a cottage in Norfolk instead and I am really looking forward to it.

NoveltyFunsy · 07/03/2020 15:53

you're worried about a holiday in September??

Geoffreythecat · 07/03/2020 15:53

We've also got a holiday booked for September. Why is anyone doubting they'll be going Confused
