@IToldYouIWasFreaky
It's not me that's being 'smug'; the clue was in my genuine question, "am I wrong?" And I'm glad that my confusion on this issue has been cleared up! Hand gel is much cheaper and more available than the antiviral stuff (that I've previously bought to counteract the norovirus when it's doing the rounds) - at least it used to be. So, noted for future reference 👍

Sorry @EllenRipley, that was harsh of me! I agree, you weren't being smug. I have just seen lots of smug "all you need is soap and water" type posts on here and Facebook and it's frustrating. But not your fault, so sorry!

I use public transport and hardly touch anything. Yes, if you have to hold onto a pole on the bus/tube, but just wash your hands when you get to work!

I commute for over an hour each way across London on a packed bus. There is a confirmed case directly on my very busy route. I get off the bus and nip in the supermarket to get my lunch and then continue into work.

I want hand gel to use in between the bus and the supermarket. I want hand gel in between the supermarket and touching the buzzer and all the door handles on my way to the sink at work.

The chances are that I will get this virus at some point soon, regardless of what I do. I'm youngish and have no health conditions. The chances are I will be fine.

Still, it's a good idea for all of us to do what we can to slow the spread of this virus. If everybody gets sick at once none of our systems will be able to cope and things will very rapidly turn to shit.

I've just made a batch of hand san using isopropyl alcohol and aloe vera gel (both ordered from amazon). WHO publish an instruction sheet for local manufacturers here:

www.who.int/gpsc/5may/Guide_to_Local_Production.pdf

They recommend a splosh of hydrogen peroxide which I didn't use, I don't know how much difference it would make. They recommend the final product should be about 75% alcohol (other sources say 60% is fine, does anybody know of any comparative studies?).

If you are trying this at home get the highest alcohol content isopropyl you can find because that allows you to add a greater proportion of moisturising ingredient.

I got 91% and mixed it 80:20 with aloe vera gel. The final alcohol content is 72.8%. I'm testing it this evening to see how kind it is to skin. So far so good, but I don't have particularly sensitive skin.

If you are trying this at home then remember that alcohol at these concentrations is highly flammable.

  • work in a well ventilated area
  • keep the lid on it as much as possible
  • store it safely
  • clean up spills straight away. If you have a large spill, pour water on it and then clean it up.

I know that there’s high demand for hand gel, but how is it still the case that nowhere has it????

EllenRipley · 07/03/2020 23:09

Aah no worries at all @IToldYouIWasFreaky - think everyone's getting frustrated where this subject is concerned! 🙂Wondering now if I could've saved myself some money and just have had some cheap vodka on standby 🤔

I read that a lot of hand gel comes from China and production has slowed down due to......coronavirus. No irony there!

I am fed up with everyone shouting soap and water whenever hand gel is mentioned... there are limited options for taps and soap on trains and tubes in London, which I spend 2hrs+ a day on. I wash my hands when I get into work, but I’ve inevitably touched lots of pretty grubby surfaces inadvertently, would rather keep my hands clean in case I absent mindedly touch my face! There are many, many situations where people don’t have constant access to taps but come in frequent contact with public areas and people...

You can buy hand gel here. 500 ml bottle plus smaller top up pump bottles of 100ml. It's 60-70% alcohol, tea tree oil and rosemary oil, both of which are anti viral. It smells lovely and doesn't dry your hands out. Mine has just arrived (thank god)
