With alcohol as the highest ingredient but doesn't say how much.
in HOME BARGAINS one per person allowance.
Just seen one staff member verbally attacked really badly, poor man.

People are going crazy and have lost all sense of proportion. I was in the pharmacy yesterday to pick up a prescription. Big line in front of me, all old people. Every single one wanted hand gel. The poor woman behind the counter had to keep repeating herself (and why they couldn't all hear what she said the first time I don't know - I was at the end of the sodding queue and I heard her the first time!). SOAP AND WATER IS MUCH BETTER PEOPLE!

Sakura7 · 07/03/2020 13:14

It's crazy.

Another thing flying off the shelves in Penneys (primark) yesterday were the packs of empty travel size bottles/sprays. I overhead a woman saying she was putting diluted Dettol into a spray and using that instead of hand sanitizer.

Devlesko · 07/03/2020 13:19

Just seen that government are going to ask old people to keep distance next week, and will ask them to visit family and then isolate.
I'm glad consideration is being made for them now, but unfortunately it comes too late, there's no wy to stop worst case scenario now, it should have been contained.

@Devlesko Just seen that government are going to ask old people to keep distance next week, and will ask them to visit family and then isolate.

Where did you see that?

Theresnobslikeshowbs · 07/03/2020 13:36

It’s in the media

Skyejuly · 07/03/2020 13:37

JUST USE SOAP AND WSTER!

idontlike789 · 07/03/2020 13:38

Thing is 1 bottle of hand sanitizer last months even when if you use it several times a day so why oh why are people wanting to buy bottles of it ?
Just wash your hands with soap & water job done.

HotChocolatemarshmallows · 07/03/2020 13:41

Soap & water is fine when you are at home but if you are out & about a lot then hand gel is a must.
It's frustrating for those of us that needs hand gel but can't get hold of any because if the panic!

Sakura7 · 07/03/2020 13:42

JUST USE SOAP AND WSTER!

Yes that's really easy to do when you're on a packed train or bus, or in any place where soap and water are not readily available. How are people still not grasping this? Hmm

bernardswatchplease · 07/03/2020 13:43

@Sakura7 I'm also baffled that people keep stating SOAP AND WATER. They clearly don't use public transport or travel for work etc. Are you all actually saying you are consistently near a tap?! Hand gel is a good alternative to hand washing when soap and water isn't available

tribpot · 07/03/2020 13:44

ITV are saying that the government will advise the elderly to visit relatives ahead of social distancing coming into effect but I think this is a rumour - nothing on the DHSC guidance page, which was updated yesterday.

LittleSweet · 07/03/2020 13:45

What bothers me is that people obviously weren't that bothered about clean hands before. I assumed that everyone washed their hands regularly like me.
I went food shopping this morning and the shop was out of toilet paper, but not flushable wipes, long life milk, ibuprofen and paracetamol. Low on wine, beer, chicken and pizza. I don't understand the panic buying of wine, beer, pizza and chicken. Also I'm guessing that people are buying toilet roll because of the fear of diarrhoea, but in that situation flushable wipes are better. Also there were boxes of tissues, which do flush, but no kitchen roll, which blocks the toilet.

zafferana · 07/03/2020 13:47

I use public transport and hardly touch anything. Yes, if you have to hold onto a pole on the bus/tube, but just wash your hands when you get to work!

EllenRipley · 07/03/2020 13:49

The majority of these hand sanitizers don't actually kill viruses though, just bacteria - am I wrong?

I've always bought the ones that specifically state that they kill viruses. Not had a problem stocking up for myself & family, I've just bought a load online. No way of knowing if they work on this particular corona though.

nomorespaghetti · 07/03/2020 13:49

littlesweet I have recently learned you shouldn’t flush tissues or flushable wipes (which are rarely actually flushable), both cause blockages. Pee, poo, paper only!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 07/03/2020 13:50

Dh is a police officer and often doesn’t see a sink between jobs, he uses hand gel all the time!

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 07/03/2020 13:54

@EllenRipley. You're wrong. Hand sanitizer over 60% alcohol is effective against Coronavirus, which is why the NHS and WHO, among others are recommending its use when soap and water is not available.

It really baffles me that people are carrying on with this smug "hand gels don't kill viruses" thing when it's been made clear, for quite a while, that they do!

Ilikewinter · 07/03/2020 13:56

Peoples attitude to retail staff is beyond pathetic. Yesterday i had a woman ask for hand gel, probably the 30th enquiry of the day, i said we didnt have any, her response was "are you fucking kidding me", throughly pissed off with her i said " no im not kidding, have you been living under a rock for the last few weeks, every where is sold out'". Shes complained to head office about my attitude towards her!

starfishmummy · 07/03/2020 14:00

Flushable wipes cause blockages to the sewage system.
Tissues also should not go down the toilet. Yes they look similar to loo roll: but loo roll is designed to disintegrate, tissues are designed to stay together!!

LamingtonBear · 07/03/2020 14:01

I plan to panic buy pizza, wine and twiglets.

zafferana · 07/03/2020 14:09

A police officer (or anyone else whose job involves them being out and about in the community, dealing with other humans, for long stretches of time), I can understand. All those old people in the pharmacy yesterday? What the hell are they doing that needs gallons of hand gel FGS? They were all retired and I'm will to bet rarely far from a sink and some soap.

redsky21 · 07/03/2020 14:17

@LittleSweet I don't think its necessarily that people weren't washing their hands before. It's that we've been told to wash hands MORE than usual, and that people are panic buying in case they have to isolate themselves. Same goes for loo roll, pasta etc all things that you would want plenty of if you couldn't leave your house for a while.

Dacaday · 07/03/2020 15:11

Yes that's really easy to do when you're on a packed train or bus, or in any place where soap and water are not readily available. How are people still not grasping this? hmm

But why would you need to wash your hands on a train or bus? Just don't touch your face and wash them when you get to where you're going. The only people I can see who have a real need for hand gel are carers/nurses etc who work out in the community and need to wash between patients, and possibly school children due the tiny ratio of sinks to pupils. Most other people can wash their hands at work or home.

And there is no way they can make the elderly stay at home otherwise half the UK workforce will have no childcare and be unable to attend work, including NHS staff. My own parents in their 70's do childcare for 3 grandchildren, one of who's parents is a nurse.

Devlesko · 07/03/2020 15:18

My dd came home from school briefly last night.
I made her promise to keep her hands in her pockets, use them as least as she could, and wash them as soon as inside school. I called her later and the little madam told me she couldn't be bothered washing hands and she'd licked the poles.

Old people go shopping more than anyone, they are about in the community more than many who work. They do voluntary work too and make up most of the staff in charity shops. There are plenty of over 70's serving communities.
OK, they'll do good to stop now, but they need gel the same as others who are out and about.

But why would you need to wash your hands on a train or bus? Just don't touch your face and wash them when you get to where you're going.

You could be getting a bus to go into town to do a food shop, and getting the bus back. Even if you go to a bathroom in a shopping centre you'll still have to touch doors, rails, etc, along the way. Also it's easy to say 'don't touch your face' but people do it hundreds of times a day without even realising. It's an ingrained habit that is difficult to break, even with the best will in the world.
