Why the water? (Stockpiling)

MyyyyyCorona · 06/03/2020 23:20

Seeing at lot on various threads this week that people are stocking up on bottled water.

WHY?

Am I missing something? Are we going to go full Walking Dead with the fall of society?

I just can't imagine that the water board is going to "fall" and we aren't going to have any running water. Bonkers waste of money.

I've been wondering the same myself. Also milk and fruit - they wont last more than a few days.

Mydogatemypurse · 06/03/2020 23:33

Doubt you need water

Bouncer4me · 07/03/2020 08:50

if the people who carry out routine maintenance at the water processing plants get ill and can’t come to work I don’t know what would happen? Would the water be undrinkable or would there be a way of it being done by computer??

Dennisreynoldsduster · 07/03/2020 08:52

I always get water with my shop because late last year we had our water unexpectedly got cut off for four days and it was a nightmare. Maybe people are expecting the same although not sure why that would happen in regards to the virus

bellinisurge · 07/03/2020 08:53

No need for water. If you have suddenly decided you want to be a general prepper like me you would know to look at likely problems. Water isn't one of them.

yatapina · 07/03/2020 08:54

I'm not stock piling but I do keep a small stash of bottled water in the house just incase there's an issue with supply.

We had a corroded pipe last year and the water was off for 24 hours and it was a PITA - I didn't realise how much we used!

bellinisurge · 07/03/2020 08:54

In this situation, water isn't one of them, I mean.
Spend your money on something else or not at all.

Sparklingbrook · 07/03/2020 08:55

I have no idea. The stockpiling thing is very strange. I have not read anything about water supply being affected. Confused
But if it is people will need some to take their stockpiled paracetamol with and boil their pasta mountain in.

Shandied · 07/03/2020 08:57

We quite often have a day or 2 with either no water or really low water pressure, so always keep a bottle or 2 in. If people are self isolating thats likely to cause delays fixing it due to potential lack of engineers. That said, I haven't got any more in than I usually would. Some people also drink it instead of tap water for a number of reasons and are probably buying a few extra as they see the shelves emptying. If you don't use it and aren't worried then does it really matter to you? There is also the possibility that water treatment plants will be closed, although I am guessing this is one of the occupations people expect to still go to work whilst they stay at home with the children they have pulled out of school.

ineedaholidaynow · 07/03/2020 08:59

My DM only drinks bottled water, so I suppose if other people who are stockpiling do the same they would buy extra.

Also I suppose if we get to the point where 20% of the workforce are off at the same time, water pipe repairs might not get done as soon as possible etc

KitKat1985 · 07/03/2020 09:28

I also find the water thing a bit odd. It's unlikely the water mains will get disconnected, and it's not like we've been short of rain recently!

KatyaZamolodchikova · 07/03/2020 09:37

I work in water. Most of the clean water side of things is computerised with some manual sampling. Basic water supply can be managed in the short term with reduced staffing levels if needed.

Waste water processing may be harder as there is more involved in that and more presence required. Things like blockages, bursts and leaks will most likely be harder to manage but also doable. It will be things that require interaction with the public that will be first to be reduced and those things, while
Important are not likely to affect mass access to clean water or removal of waste. Covid-19 it’s self will not affect processes, as PP said it will be staffing levels that will be the challenge. We have put a lot of support and guidance in place and are continually reviewing it to try and manage as best we can in the circumstances.

vera99 · 07/03/2020 13:53

Water stocking is barmy if our water supply is seriously threatened then we are truly in Mad Max territory and a gun or sword would be more use than 12 bottles of Evian.

Skyejuly · 07/03/2020 13:58

I keep water ready.

iswhois · 07/03/2020 14:03

a gun or sword would be more use than 12 bottles of Evian.

I needed this today GrinGrin thank you

TheWordmeister · 07/03/2020 14:05

People are idiots

MinkowskisButterfly · 07/03/2020 15:10

I have a smallish supply because we had our supply cut off in a bad storm and a near by water facility became contaminated another year so better safe than sorry. My supply is nothing to do with covid.

justasking111 · 07/03/2020 15:16

A friend has a health issue with stones in their kidneys. They were advised by consultant to drink bottled water. Other than that as others said we will need a big gun if water is rationed nationwide.

Bottleofcorona · 07/03/2020 15:21

Long life milk had sold out in our supermarket today along with Hand Sanitiser. The eater shelves were patchy too. Lots of toilet roll though!

Bottleofcorona · 07/03/2020 15:22

Water

cologne4711 · 07/03/2020 17:48

if the people who carry out routine maintenance at the water processing plants get ill and can’t come to work but they wouldn't all get ill at the same time, would they?

A lifestraw is a better option and a lot more eco-friendly than all those bottles!

userxx · 07/03/2020 18:03

Because people are getting super excited... they love the drama

Yes and yes.

Lillyhatesjaz · 07/03/2020 21:44

I think we need to think 2 weeks of self isolation rather than full on zombie apocalypse.
