AIBU to cancel my cleaner

Because of coronavirus. She cleans weekly for us.
If she is sick we will be too.
I feel bad doing it to her and we need cleaners services badly.
And yet, if she is ill we will be too.

Perhaps you could buy her a hazmat suit to wear in your house?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 07/03/2020 16:33

YABU. It's her livelihood and I am so sick of people getting this sodding thing out of proportion. Are you in a high risk category? If not, you need to get a grip.

Designerenvy · 07/03/2020 16:39

YABU, unless you have been told to self isolate or she has .
I'd imagine a cleaning service would be more important now than ever, seeing ad the virus can live for up to 12 hours on certain surfaces !
Unfortunately I don't have a cleaner , so need to do that myself .

Notonmyshift · 07/03/2020 18:27

Just get a grip!

unluckyagain · 07/03/2020 18:50

I'm self employed and have had all my work cancelled for the next few months. I still won't be cancelling my cleaner as that makes life difficult for her as well as me. I'll tighten my belt in other ways.

Runnerduck34 · 07/03/2020 23:59

Would you still pay her?
If not Yabu, especially if you are not self isolating. You could catch it anywhere and unless you have an underlying medical condition its unlikely to be serious. Your cleaner probably relies on her income , she may well find another client and you'd lose her completely

Growingboys · 08/03/2020 23:35

OP staggered to hear you 'work in academia' - dare I ask in what capacity?

Bakedbrie · 10/03/2020 07:41

Sorry. Going to buck the views here. I may well let my cleaner go, for the simple reason that I’m stuck in the house more and find myself having time to do it myself.

IkeaSlave · 10/03/2020 07:45

If I am on full pay leave, I will keep paying my cleaner as I am not a cunt.

IsisCam · 10/03/2020 10:06

As a researcher.

PILs are socially distancing themselves and so are asking cleaner not to come, but will continue to pay

This thread is a couple of weeks old now I know, but instead of starting a new one I was wondering what people are doing now with the lockdown in place?

Are there any cleaners that have an opinion on this?

Peridot1 · 25/03/2020 15:39

I read somewhere earlier that they are not classed as essential so shouldn’t be working.

thekingfisher · 25/03/2020 15:45

Ive cancelled mine but am still paying her

BlueLadybird · 25/03/2020 15:54

@MrsTumbletap - domestic cleaning is not essential work so they shouldn’t be doing it. Hopefully the government will financially support those self employed.

I already asked mine not to come (pre lockdown) and paid anyway.

I have to say this thread is really interesting. In such a short space of time we have gone from the OP being laughed at for even suggesting her cleaner shouldn’t come to the entire country being locked down.

PotatoesPastaAndBread · 25/03/2020 18:28

Me too, cancelled her but still paying her

BanKittenHeels · 25/03/2020 18:32

We cancelled our cleaner (on full pay) two weeks ago whilst we were symptomatic (I don’t think it was CV) and this week received an email to say the agency was temporarily closing. Issue taken out of our hands. I don’t know if they will take our monthly payments but I hope so for the time being.

SilverySurfer · 25/03/2020 18:36

There have been countless threads on this subject over the last week. The majority of us have cancelled our cleaners but will still pay them, to be reviewed in a few weeks.

midlifeangst · 26/12/2020 18:02

Live in tier 2 but work in tier 4. There’s a lot of implied pressure to go into office despite the fact we can easily work from home.
What would you do? I work in financial services which counts as a key worker

DreamsDoComeTrue1974 · 26/12/2020 18:29

I bet lots of people feel like complete idiots now reflecting back on what they said and what has happened since!!!

Ohbabybab · 26/12/2020 18:38

@DreamsDoComeTrue1974 I came on to say that too!! It is crazy though what’s happened this year and that ‘staying at home’ with schools closed Etc seemed a ridiculous concept in early March. How innocent we were!

Ohbabybab · 26/12/2020 18:40

And genuinely without adding personal blame, posters travelling to multiple meetings over London when in hindsight this was the peak of the virus.

ABigFatCrow · 26/12/2020 18:47

I was just thinking that. Some people were so nasty with what they were saying!

Porcupineintherough · 26/12/2020 19:02

I know 2 people who have caught cv from their cleaners. So yes it's a possibility. And you dont owe her a job so, if you decide for any reason you dont want a cleaner any more, it's fine to give her notice.
