Do you know what self isolate means?

Wasn't sure if I should put this in general chat or not. Wanted wide spread opinions rather than people on here who are likely to be more knowledgeable 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyway, what is your understanding of this much bandied about term?

I've only just realised I got it completely wrong. Not currently needing to do so btw.

There is a law already: the Civil Contingencies Act.

Not to mention you’d have to wait for the self isolating person to be fully recovered before any trial...!

Well it takes months for trials anyway so no change there but why do you think they wouldn’t arrest you? They could create ”isolation” detention centres easily enough. Of all the things I would be confident about is the governments ability to bang heads when required. But this is extreme tactics we’re talking here ..... given how mildly some people will experience this Virus we probably shouldn’t even be discussing it.

I think the "self" bit means that you manage the isolation yourself rather than being isolated by others e.g. in an isolation facility. So it's not tautological.

Totally agree with the pp saying people are too selfish, individualistic and entitled in the West. It's so true. I saw something on the News thr other night and a Karate teacher was teaching his students in China via video links. They spoke to a young girl and she was very much if the attitude, "We must stay in our apartments to prevent the spread of the virus and that's the right thing we must do for the greater good". You just don't get that mindset here. Makes me laugh when people say they'll just order in, get deliveries etc...Oh yes, right because if we have a widespread outbreak takeaway owners and delivery drivers and people to pick your delivery in the warehouse are all going to be miraculously unaffected. I think the media is sensationaling it with almost a morbid glee. We need to stay realistic and sensible and go about out business unless things change.

That's what I had thought UnaOfStormHold but apparently not!

I think you'd be allowed in your garden, the virus can't jump over the garden fence (and that assumes you've got it).

I did think you could potentially go out in your car to get out of the house but then I thought what happens if you break down or have an accident and people have to come and help you (and you do actually have the virus). So it really is your own home and garden I think, unless you live rurally and know you won't see other people if you go out for a walk.

When the virus was mostly just in China they had some tv footage of people apparently being forcibly dragged from their apartments to be quarantined. Can't imagine that happening here?

In China people were taken forcfully from their homes if they had broken isolation without prior agreement. The autorities put tape on the doors and would check to see if anyone had broken isolation.

*forcefully

even if the army was brought in they couldn’t check every household in case they slipped out to the shops

to top up the key meter for their electric?!

No electric = no hot water for hand washing or washing any other part of the body.
