To not send my children to school next week

That's it really. It seems mad to send them and have them inevitably catch the virus when they could stay at home. What are others doing?

It’s not going to save their lives, unless they have a serious underlying health condition. If they are perfectly healthy children then you are being an idiot.

Send them in, you could have them off for 6 months. Has someone been infected in school or in your area?

iheartislesofwight · 06/03/2020 14:03

also meant to say, the dc will probably love being off to start with but it's hardly fair to keep them at home for months on end, if they are going out then they should be at school.

InDubiousBattle · 06/03/2020 14:03

Next week I'll be going about my business as usual, including sending my children to school.

www.statnews.com/2020/03/03/who-is-getting-sick-and-how-sick-a-breakdown-of-coronavirus-risk-by-demographic-factors/

That article has interesting stats for the coronavirus and who has been affected in china. Very very small percentage of children affected. Its adults over 30 who are most at risk, men and people with illnesses already.

I am in no way concerned about my children catching the virus. We have had many viruses before and I didnt keep them off school because they might catch them. Calm down.

DropYourSword · 06/03/2020 14:04

If it’s going to be that widespread, you’d have to keep them off for years!!

Isthistrueor · 06/03/2020 14:04

Oh ffs, this is all getting out of hand. Please stop reading tabloid trash. Coronavirus is not a major threat, we are not all going to die, it’s not the plague.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/03/2020 14:06

And do you intend on keeping them indoors for the duration?

Foobydoo · 06/03/2020 14:09

chng.it/FMLqVQ4BPG
Change.org petition here campaigning to allow parents who can keep children at home do so without penalty.
This should also reduce the risk for children whos parents need them to attend.

TheFairyCaravan · 06/03/2020 14:10

Do you plan on keeping them locked indoors for months otherwise there's no point.

Honestly the hysteria surrounding this is ridiculous

Owlypants · 06/03/2020 14:12

If you're worried enough to keep your kids off school are you going to have your post redirected? You can't be sure the postman is washing his hands, you could end up with the virus being delivered to you. Yes you are being unreasonable

PineappleDanish · 06/03/2020 14:12

"Save their lives".

FFS. Just goes to show the scaremongering newspapers and MN threads are having an effect. And not in a good way.

ItsAllTheDramaMickIJustLoveIt · 06/03/2020 14:12

Mine are absolutely going to school unless they close them or they’re ill. With anything. I don’t feel the need to deprive them of their education and all of us of our sanity otherwise.

BarefootHippieChick · 06/03/2020 14:13

I have a child in year 11. They'll be going to school every day until the end of June, virus or not.
I'm also confused where the statistics are coming from that 80% of the population will catch it?

lurker69 · 06/03/2020 14:13

do yo not think if it was inevitable the school would close down?

Potkettlexx · 06/03/2020 14:14

@TheFairyCaravan

Absolutely agree. It’s beyond ridiculous the way folk are carrying on.

I get it’s not great but folk panic buying all handwash in Tesco’s (not hand gel) people need to get a grip!

PurpleDaisies · 06/03/2020 14:15

Will you be making tin hats with them?

TotesGodsWill · 06/03/2020 14:16

You’re being hysterical

Send your kids to school, encourage good hygiene, live your lives as normal until public health experts advise otherwise

TabbyCatPaws · 06/03/2020 14:16

Yabu. Children are least affected by the virus and lots of people probably have it with mild symptoms and dont even realise.

Far better to carry on as usual and stop being hysterical.

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/03/2020 14:17

Im suprise they have not started making gas masks lol

justasking111 · 06/03/2020 14:18

They will all be off for easter unless the government dictates otherwise.

vhs95 · 06/03/2020 14:19

FHS!! I hope the cupboard under your stairs is big enough for you all to hide in. Please move this to a virus thread then we don't have to keep clicking on such hysterical stuff. What a Biscuit.

Teabunny · 06/03/2020 14:19

80-odd million people in the UK. Only a tiny proportion will contract the virus and a tinier amount may not recover.

Follow Public Health England's advice on handwashing and sneezing.

If you eat well, are generally robust healthwise and follow the handwashing advice it reduces the risk considerably.

Orangeblossom78 · 06/03/2020 14:19

No, I would only consider this if the DC were ill / had compromised immune systems. Also, been reading apparently it is very unlikely schools will be closed at all, even with cases...

More concerned about possibility of them passing any germs onto elderly grandparents or relatives with e.g. cancer, so getting them to wash hands with soap as soon as they get in from school and try not to touch faces etc, not so much for themselves but for more vulnerable others.
