Any positives that might come out of this?

So, I think going through Covid 19 in the UK is going to suck a bit, but some positives might emerge.

  • Individuals and governments might learn to better prepare for difficult situations and supply chain disruption (or not to panic as much about it, depending on what happens!)
  • Employers who were resistant to home working and video conferencing (rather than travelling to meetings) might get more at home with it, saving lots of travel expense and carbon emissions
  • Partners and kids might realise just how much mum does when she's shut up in a room for two weeks and can't do washing up, laundry, errands etc and will have to damn well step up, which also might relieve mums afterwards from 'Oh God, I'll just do it myself' syndrome.

Any other ideas - serious or silly!

Not having to navigate which of my European colleagues will go in for the kiss/double kiss/triple kiss/hug Grin.

The tories will be over the moon with this.

They can blame all the ills of brexit on coronavirus instead.

And as it seems to be killing the older generation, imagine the the glee on their faces about reduced pensions burden.

larrygrylls · 07/03/2020 07:35

Macca,

No, they really won’t. No one enjoys a pandemic and many of them are in the age range most at risk of actually DYING.

However, any challenge to the system will expose endemic flaws. As Warren Buffet said many years ago ‘ its is only when the tide goes out that you can see who is swimming naked’.

Taddda · 07/03/2020 09:24

@larrygrylls you say 'no one enjoys a pandemic', but there are obviously some already rubbing there hands together hoping for 'More housing, freeing up the NHS, less spend on Pension credit/care for the elderly and as a pp so eloquently put it 'hitting the economically inactive'....'

There is more than a sniff that this will seperate (in their eyes) the wheat from the chaff....it makes me uncomfortable that the more prevalent this becomes it will possibly show a darker side of humanity... 'throw them to the wolves'....?

I sincerely hope it's quite the opposite! It will be the more vunerable effected the most, it might not be as selective as you think- either/or, let's just hope it's not as bad as some forecast-

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · 07/03/2020 09:51

It does feel like a big change could come about socially. I would hope at its peak when we have all got it or have had it, that people will start taking care of each other more, cooking meals for neighbours, sharing their stockpiles with strangers. Appreciating our medical professions more. At the end, even when dealing with personal losses, this could be a positive re-set for our country.

Also, if it took out Trump that would be great.

StealthPolarBear · 07/03/2020 10:10

Improved status, pay and conditions for care home staff and carers in general would be wonderful and long overdue.

exiledfromcornwall · 07/03/2020 13:10

If enough "economically inactive" people die this could end the housing crisis, the pension crisis, the NHS crisis, etc.

Boris, is that you?

SummerHouse · 07/03/2020 13:13

More money into the NHS.

We will gain a new perspective on what's important.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 07/03/2020 13:24

Got told to unify and pull together over brexit. Coronavirus comes along and we get thefts of hand gels from hospitals and people stock piling toilet roll.

Nothing will be learnt from this. It'll just reiterate how selfish some people are.

jackparlabane · 07/03/2020 13:46

Hoping for more investment in the NHS.
Ideally Trump will continue spouting so much guff that no-one will vote for him again.
Though he'll get his wish of banning migrants, if as seems likely other countries ban travel to the USA...

Echobelly · 09/03/2020 22:07

Increasingly thinking/hoping that the wider world will have to consider keeping society sustainable/resilient over and above keeping capital growing and growing. Ancient societies used to keep food stocks in case of famine rather than just selling it all - everyone may need to think about managing societies so we can cope with crisis ahead of profit.

If we have to get used to standing a metre apart in queues, then maybe that'll be the end of impatient buggers ramming me up the arse in the supermarket while I'm trying to pay.

Sadly, it won't change the habits of those who can make a Swiss roll, an iceberg lettuce and the daily express take up the entire belt.

Devlesko · 09/03/2020 22:41

Away with capitalism, more tolerance of how others live, less racism because all countries have been affected?
These are more hopes dreams and wishes though Sad

UnholyStramash · 09/03/2020 22:44

Cleaner hands?!

Exochord · 09/03/2020 22:49

I think there’ll be a trend towards localism and buying British in the wake of coronavirus. Hopefully a review of poor employment conditions that leave people without sick pay. And I pray that the Chinese will be forced to stop their cruel practices towards animals.

happygertie · 09/03/2020 22:51

I hope it will put a permanent stop to the Yulin dog meat festive.

TW2013 · 09/03/2020 23:03

Won't need to buy loo roll for a while!

Devlesko · 09/03/2020 23:25

Another loo roll one.

People won't be so wasteful, especially with loo roll.
See loo roll thread Grin

TrainspottingWelsh · 09/03/2020 23:43

Another peasants revolt. When enough people are caught up in the panic to self isolate on their own unqualified advice, the army of low paid workers they assume will keep them amply supplied and the country running smoothly will be able to demand higher wages and better conditions. Looking at the desperation just for home delivery even now, if every driver got together and threatened to strike unless they got a living wage salary and a normal fair contract they'd stand a reasonable chance of getting it.

Personally I'd really like that to be the case for supermarkets and big food manufacturers, it really would be a positive if farming had the power to make them pay the actual cost of production.

Devlesko · 09/03/2020 23:59

Echobelly

I'm sure it won't come to this but I know how to feed a number of people in a famine. With the right vitamins for health.
It involves wrapping a hedgehog in clay and baking it. One of my ancestors did this and other delicacies and fed a village or two that were starving.
Eh, try telling that to young ens today Grin

PointlessAddict · 10/03/2020 00:01

Something else to blame for the imminent Brexit shitshow

IdblowJonSnow · 10/03/2020 00:13

Climate change might slow down or at least pollution decrease from fewer flights/journeys etc.

73kittycat73 · 10/03/2020 00:16

We will realise that life is short and precious but ultimately we have to let go and embrace our mortality. In the pain and grief, we will find that those who survive feel blessed and that the goal of life is to love and make the most of each special day.

That's beautiful @vera99 and just what I needed to hear, thank you! Flowers

CumbiaVillera · 10/03/2020 00:23

To stop eating animals hopefully. All of them, not just yulin and exotic ones.

Finallyatooth · 10/03/2020 00:43

I'm hoping that it will become standard practice to wear a face mask out in public if you are feeling unwell - like it is in many other countries. Will probably cut down rates of things like colds being transmitted.
