I can work from home but not everyone can. It made me wonder how on earth people with sort childcare?

I'm fine for childcare, as not currently working, but I'm really rather worried on daughter's behalf, as she is due to be doing her GCSE's. I'll be stepping up to the plate for friends, to offer to look after their kids though.

annabell22 · 04/03/2020 19:13

The UAE have done the same, day nurseries too.

Rosalo · 04/03/2020 19:15

I would be okay but DS is doing A levels so would be tough on him

TreacherousPissFlap · 04/03/2020 19:17

DS is a teen so would be fine, except it's GCSE's this year (I imagine he would use all the extra time off to revise )
There's absolutely 100% no way either of us could work from home, and my job would demand I go in (emergency services)

LoonyLunaLoo · 04/03/2020 19:19

I work in education but in outreach so I assume we’d be the first to be told to stop working as we visit lots of different places and work with some very vulnerable children. DS would be fine as he’s in year 5 so would just miss SATs (yay) and the end of Primary stuff (not so yay) really. I’d keep him going with a few workbooks, reading etc. In fact I think we’d enjoy it 😂

Letseatgrandma · 04/03/2020 19:22

We would be fine-one who can easily WFH and a teacher who could provide childcare for our own children and others if necessary.

Shamazing · 04/03/2020 19:22

I work in a school so I would be off at the same time as they are if all the schools in the area are closed.

LizziesTwin · 04/03/2020 19:24

I have heard that they are very keen to keep schools open as long as possible so that doctors & nurses can continue to work.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 04/03/2020 19:25

Im a SAHM so would be fine my concern is more that DP is self employed so missing work would mean no income

trilbydoll · 04/03/2020 19:29

Mixture of grandparents if they were happy to come out and us wfh. Kids are only 6 and 4 tho so can't be totally left to their own devices, might end up doing quite a lot in the evenings!

DebbieFiderer · 04/03/2020 19:30

We'd be fine, my parents would have the kids. No chance of my workplace closing (healthcare) and very unlikely DH's will (supermarket).

zafferana · 04/03/2020 19:30

We'll be okay - I'm a PT student with the OU and DH can work from home if necessary - but I really hope it doesn't come to everyone being shut in at home. I'll go stir crazy Sad

FourDecades · 04/03/2020 19:33

My DC are teens so can be left.

Letseatgrandma · 04/03/2020 19:34

I wonder how many cases there would have to be countrywide before they started school closures?

Nicknacky · 04/03/2020 19:35

I will be fine as long as my childminder can step in, if not I’m fucked. Though it will cost me a fortune.

zafferana · 04/03/2020 19:37

Only in the very worst case scenario apparently @Letseatgrandma. I heard on R4 this morning that it would be the last resort and only to protect the vulnerable as anyone under 20 is getting very mild cases and they know the chaos it would cause for working parents and business in general.

IceColdCat · 04/03/2020 19:37

I work at a university so if they were closed as well as the schools it would be ok.

Chocolatedaim · 04/03/2020 19:39

I’m a childminder, I suspect I will be playing fast and loose with the ratios to help out friends 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hopefully it won’t come to that. Just remember to wash your hands!

OntheWaves40 · 04/03/2020 19:42

I work at a school so this would be lovely for me!

newbingepisodes · 04/03/2020 19:43

I work in a university so I'd be ok!

Donkeytail · 04/03/2020 19:44

I'm self employed and work from home. My kids are 10 and 13 so old enough to amuse themselves while I work. Dh can work from home too so it wouldn't be an issue for us at all.

bumblingbovine49 · 04/03/2020 19:46

Well D has been out of school for 6 weeks already. He has SEN and it all Brookes down. He has been doing non-work anyway as he is so depressed. DH and I both work for the same university so would be ok at home. Not sure how.long they could stay shut though

AuntieStella · 04/03/2020 19:46

It'll be a bugger for those in years 11 and 13

But DD is already planning to sell her daytime babysitting services to our neighbours who will need additional childcare during school hours.

BridgeToTerabithia · 04/03/2020 19:47

I would work from home.
