My company has banned all train and air travel

So I have to drive 275 miles to get to head office for all my training.

I can't understand why

Anyone's else's company done the same?

picklebarrelfalls · 04/03/2020 17:03

Have they not postponed your training too then? Madness at that distance 🤯

MzHz · 04/03/2020 17:03

if they are paying a decent milage rate...

could they do the training on Skype?

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 04/03/2020 17:05

Ours have stopped travel to stop people travelling, driving wouldn't be an acceptable option either. We do have a senior override if the travel is essential and cannot be cancelled.

Surely you shouldn't be going to head office at all in your case???

MaryHerbert · 04/03/2020 17:05

What about people who can't drive there for one reason or another?

TheMemoryLingers · 04/03/2020 17:06

I read something recently about the chances of catching a virus being greatly increased if you travel on public transport, so I can understand this decision. However, I think they should either postpone the training or offer it remotely.

My company hasn't banned travel altogether but a lot of restrictions have been imposed and they're urging people to avoid it where possible.

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 17:07

Question if you have to go. I wouldn’t drive that far.

Whitegrenache · 04/03/2020 17:07

It's a brand new job ...they say I have to be there but can take my time and travel all day Monday with no rush to get there. I'm due to be down a lot the next few weeks

OP posts:
Whitegrenache · 04/03/2020 17:08

Also have a company car

Drive is Newcastle to London

OP posts:
ChessieFL · 04/03/2020 17:09

Yes, we’ve had to cancel all travel for the next few weeks.

picklebarrelfalls · 04/03/2020 17:12

So you're travelling into the capital city where the highest concentration of people are and where CV is very likely to become rife? riiiiiiiiiight? 🤔

Whitegrenache · 04/03/2020 17:13

Outskirts of London - no not central London

OP posts:
picklebarrelfalls · 04/03/2020 17:15

Still!? Seems like they haven't really thought it through .... There's still a hell of a lot of people in Greater London and a high movement rate.

MrsJoshNavidi · 04/03/2020 17:17

My company hasn't said anything. I'm on the train on the way home from a business trip right now Hmm

MrsJoshNavidi · 04/03/2020 17:18

I've been to London Shock

TheSmelliestHouse · 04/03/2020 17:19

I really would not drive that far.

mumwon · 04/03/2020 17:24

so presumably you wont be stopping at service stations for food, petrol & the loo? [&] [mixing] [with] [international] [traffic] [transport] ?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 04/03/2020 17:29

Sounds ridiculous and poorly thought out. They should cancel your requirement to attend head office and do Skype meetings/training where possible.

BigFatLiar · 04/03/2020 17:30

Do you get to travel all day to go home afterwards (assuming it doesn't end on a Friday)?

Comefromaway · 04/03/2020 17:31

My husband can’t drive due to a medical condition.

They either cancel the training altogether or alloW you to travel how you wish.

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 17:32

I just wouldn’t because it’s anti environmentally friendly to get everyone to drive and it’s too far and a strain.

dottiedodah · 04/03/2020 17:33

I can see their point I suppose ,but as someone else said, what about Motorway Service stations ,loos and so on .Seems a bit of a knee jerk reaction to me really .275 miles is an awfully long way .Are you staying in a hotel?(more chances to mix with people!)

AutumnRose1 · 04/03/2020 17:34

OP what does happen if you don’t drive or have a car?

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 04/03/2020 17:37

If everyone else goes the same way, all the London office will have to close down, that could be amusing. It's not even about driving (and that would just be impossible) but there's absolutely no parking in central London Grin

Shame for hospitals like GOSH or the Royal Marsden (to name a few) whose staff has to commute.

kazza446 · 04/03/2020 17:40

My company have cancelled all large gatherings. Meetings to be done via Skype!
