So I have to drive 275 miles to get to head office for all my training.

I can't understand why

OP posts:
Whitegrenache · 04/03/2020 18:39

275 miles on a Monday will take me approx 6 hours which is unusual to travel in a car in my profession

So you have a train ticket & they'll pay for it-do you also have to hand it in??

If not-how can they stop you using it?

MarshaBradyo · 04/03/2020 18:40

Just make sure the people who have banned it are talking to the people who are arranging the training.

MarieQueenofScots · 04/03/2020 18:42

Just interested really but how are they dealing with any people who can’t drive?

Or are unable to drive that far?

Alsohuman · 04/03/2020 18:42

How are they going to know how you got there? Use the train ticket and claim mileage to cover the cost.

BigFatLiar · 04/03/2020 18:44

1000 miles. Presumably thats with two of you driving? Even at 70mph that would be over 14 hours non stop.

Ohdeariedear · 04/03/2020 18:45

I honestly can’t see an issue with this.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 04/03/2020 18:47

The other day we drove 1000 miles with the children in the vehicle, stopping only to refuel ourselves or the car.

That’s almost a full day of travelling. That’s not nothing. I don’t believe you if you say it’s a doddle.

Have you checked for roadworks? Allow time to stop for something to eat and have a pee.

I used to longish distances regularly and its good to get out and wander every now and then.

coconuttelegraph · 04/03/2020 18:48

its seems a little short sighted. Would be better to pay for first class train

Can the CV not afford first class tickets Confused

Whitegrenache · 04/03/2020 18:50

6 hours would be to include stops and possible road works

OP posts:
coconuttelegraph · 04/03/2020 18:51

How are they going to know how you got there?

Possibly not the best start to a new jobm Deliberately doing what you've been specifically told not to. The lack of arriving at the training in the company car she's been told to use might be a giveaway.

BigFatLiar · 04/03/2020 18:51

coming back Thursday

So training ends Wednesday? If training ends Thursday ask to stop Thursday night rather than travel at the end of the day.

WaxOnFeckOff · 04/03/2020 18:52

We've been told to limit visits to other offices and avoid all non essential travel. The expectation is that all visitors to the offices will be banned regardless.

WingBingo · 04/03/2020 18:53

I would be happy to do that drive.

HeresMe · 04/03/2020 18:53

So they don't want you traveling on public transport in case you get infected, but don't discount someone on the course being infected in the same room as rest of you makes sense Confused.

WingDefence · 04/03/2020 18:55

My departmental head told me tonight that all non-essential international travel is about to be stopped at my multi-national company, and we're going to be asked to consider whether domestic travel is necessary.

I'm in London today/tomorrow already for meetings but we have lots via skype/Teams so it won't be a difficult move to do everything online. Although I think that meetings can be a lot more productive in person, I'm happy to work from home for the foreseeable time.

(Added bonus for the companies is the reduction in T&S costs...)

RB68 · 04/03/2020 18:58

lol re virus and 1st class - no just less crowded no one right in your face more room etc

UniversalAunt · 04/03/2020 18:59

As an aside, travel deemed non-urgent is often clamped down to manage Q4 costs & expenses.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 04/03/2020 19:03

My company is fucking terrible as we make all our money by flying people around the world ! So no stops nothing

Our clients are the ones stopping us !

Zaphodsotherhead · 04/03/2020 19:09

I work in a shop - face to face contact with up to 1,000 different people a day.

I'm basically fucked, aren't I?

(sorry, just to illustrate that a lot of people's jobs involve dealing with members of the public on a daily basis and none of us are being told not to come to work 'just in case')

notalwaysalondoner · 04/03/2020 19:10

They do realise the majority of people in the south east and several other major cities get to and from work exclusively on public transport and many don’t even own cars? I understand flying in a way as it’s a much higher risk that someone on the plane has been to somewhere else in the world with coronavirus, but trains seems unreasonable and a bit of an overreaction unless you’re also asking people to work from home all the time and not go out and interact in the evenings/weekend etc.

My company has a pretty nuanced approach based on what city you’re in, what country you’re going to, and for courses, how many people are coming from different offices. We do a LOT of business travel so couldn’t afford to just ban it unless a pandemic was really rampaging.

rookiemere · 04/03/2020 19:22

I wonder if companies are worried about getting sued by employees who catch coronavirus through work travel.

AutumnRose1 · 04/03/2020 19:23

rookie I think it’s likely they’re more worried about the economic hit of several staff being off.

Yurona · 04/03/2020 19:28

Ours so far just have banned international travel - let’s see when train travel will be banned (And the london office closed)
