Chronic illness/immuno suppressed support thread?

ALemonyPea · 04/03/2020 13:09

I'm trying not to get too worried about Corona virus, bit hard when it's all over the place.

I have a chronic illness and taking chemo tablets, so my immune system isn't at its best at the minute.

I've got a head cold which started on Monday, no temperature. I've not been in contact with anyone known to have CV, or not been on holiday anywhere known to have an outbreak. No people in my city have been confirmed as having it. Trying not be silly about symptoms as it's nothing that I've not had before.

Anyone else flapping a little? Could do with some support, if only to mentally slap me.

IMO family’s booking skiing trips and coughing all over my daughter is not ok who has asthma and several other conditions.

It’s like everyone is agreeing with the master race theory like o well it’s only the sick and old. Thanks! And yes it’s not OK.

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 19:51

Hope schools close soon.

dontcallmelen · 10/03/2020 21:02

Hello, I have been lurking as I have been doing my ostrich impression but anxiety has got the better of me today, my Dd has lupus & is due to give birth any day now, she will need to start steroids straight after the birth, which has made me very concerned for her wellbeing, I also have dilated cardiomyopathy with a ejection fraction of 35% also have stealing blood syndrome & have had six stents so have been ruminating on mine & my dds chances of coping with the virus.
Thank you for this thread.

Wheezycheezeball · 10/03/2020 21:17

I take a biologic medication for Arthritis and I’m unable to find any info about it. There is some talk of biologics having the potential to be advantageous because of reduced inflammation but that could equally be a disadvantage and no one in authority can say.

I’m really concerned about my kids getting it as I’ll have to look after them through their illness & I’ll be like a sitting duck.

Flossie44 · 10/03/2020 21:19

Purplewhitelie. Couldn’t have said it better myself!! I’m sick of this ‘oh but they had underlying condition, so it’s fine’ attitude!! No it’s not bloody fine.
My daughter is so weak and vulnerable. She even got cellulitis from a flu jab. She won’t cope. It’s scary

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 21:28

Yeh it’s not ok. What the hell is going on?!

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 21:32

It feels a lot like discrimination against elderly and the sick. I thought this left us in WW2.

Flossie44 · 10/03/2020 21:46

Yes I feel like their looking for a master race. Getting rid of the weak. Despicable!!

EggysMom · 10/03/2020 21:51

I'd like to thank all you ladies for this thread - I have found out more useful information from here than from any of the official NHS bulletins or news articles.

I have hypothyroidism, vitiligo and occasional psoriasis. I'm not on immuno-suppressants - I hadn't realised that was the key factor. Now I am reassured that although I struggle to shift colds, I'm not likely to have complications from Covid-19.

DS only has vitiligo. However his SLD means that he does not understand hygiene measures. We still feed & toilet him. He won't develop complications but we won't be able to isolate him and will most likely cross-infect.

DH has hypertension and has reduced kidney functioning whilst awaiting an op which is optimistically being arranged for this summer. I'm going to presume that he is at risk of complications. But at least he can be isolated if I sleep in DS bedroom.

Purplewhitelie · 10/03/2020 21:55

Well I’ve got a heart problem as well so have both my parents (genetics for you). Plus all the other things I have said. I work and am not a drain or society and nor should I be even having to say this!

AnotherMurkyDay · 10/03/2020 22:16

Hats off to Boris Johnson, I thought something he did as PM would kill me off but I didn't see it happening so quickly. And It turns out it won't be because he did something it will be because he did nothing. There's a certain irony to that that I hope will help soothe me once I catch this virus and am eradicated through lazy social Darwinism.

Either that or the anti bac will save us

aWeaponCalledtheWord · 11/03/2020 18:38

i’m starting to worry a bit today. as i said upthread, i have psoriatic arthritis and am on methotrexate. also hypothyroidism with a massive substernal goitre that needs removing.

today i have a temperature of 99.3, woke up with a banging headache and have a weird runny nose with no congestion.

i am clueless - is this a high temp? should i worry more, or just ignore for now?

i really, really don’t want this virus. i understand that i’m likely to get it (although i am mostly housebound due to pain - the one silver lining of bastarding arthritis) but i’m scared.

FuzzyPuffling · 11/03/2020 19:21

I hear you....

Oblomov20 · 11/03/2020 19:29

Blimey. Loads of diabetics here. Never even occurred to me that I should be worried.

AmIAPenguin · 12/03/2020 09:10

We’re all ready self isolating from each other. It’s getting scary as Dh is my carer but he’s not allowed in the kitchen etc. We’re lucky enough to use our savings to eat ready meals whilst he can still leave and go to the shops. But I’ve had some scary lack of care times and I’m not sure if I’m going to come out the other side of this very functional.

If he’s infected and we out a gown on him, can he still change my sheets? M
We’ve decided to sit in the garden together 3m apart to still actually see each other

ItsALittleMoreNuancedThanThat · 12/03/2020 09:36

aWeaponCalledTheWord that's 37.4C, which is a raised temperature.

I'm not a doctor (we should shorten that to INAD Grin), but given your illness, I'd at least (try to) call 111 for advice. Hope you're feeling better today Thanks

My first day of homeschooling the children went ok, although it was exhausting. I'm used to having a lot of the day to rest.

Oblomov20 have a look at the 'worried about Coronavirus' threads. The first post of each thread has lots of links explaining everything (in the public domain at least) that's known so far. Diabetes is one of the comorbidities they keep mentioning wrt poorer outcomes.

Don't read the stuff posted at 2am though. (Unless it's from Oz).

dontcallmelen · 12/03/2020 10:29

I’m wondering what if any decisions will be made today after the cobra meeting, I’m trying very hard not to let anxiety get the better of me not sure I’m winning that battle though.
Hope you are ok @FuzzyPuffling

Just found out my new colleague has been taking the piss to others because I wipe down my phone if people use it even though she knows I'm immunosuppressed Angry. People have always found it amusing that I have hand sanitiser etc & I can only assume it's because I don't look sick. Pretty sure no one would be laughing if I had cancer & wanted to avoid illness so why is any other health issue funny to people? I'm so annoyed. I'm as worried about cold or norovirus as I am of covid-19 & have always behaved this way long before this. Why do people have to be such pricks?!

iVampire · 12/03/2020 10:32

I think there will be more explicit guidance on social distancing

  • avoid public transport
  • avoid busy places, particularly indoors
  • stay >2m away from people
  • keep away from all symptomatic people, even when it’s likely all they have is a common cold
ALemonyPea · 12/03/2020 22:01

Lux, people were awful to me when I put a plea for anti bac on my FB. I use it when out and about, have done so for months now, but few people know about my condition. Attitudes are awful.

The piss takers are annoying me, I think I should just come off social media for a bit.

Ankylosing Spondylitis here so on biologic, Sulfasalsazine and usually a whole load of steroids for breathing issues.

On the fb support group it’s being said that biologic should still be taken for now but if you have concerns, speak to your consultant.

Link is to possible claim that a biologic may help with Corona:

Supposed to be going to CenterParcs at Easter 🤦🏻‍♀️

Nomorewine77 · 13/03/2020 16:05

So glad I found this thread, up until now I haven't been unduly concerned ( ostrich, head in sand ) I have Reactive Arthritis and take sulfasalazine, recently had a mega flare at the beginning of the year. Last year wasn't great either as I seem to have caught everything going and then some. Work in a public library and can't seem to find any definitive advice on what to do/ what will happen/ how being immunosuppressed increases/ decreases chance of serious illness with covid 19!

ALemonyPea · 23/03/2020 14:01

How is everyone doing?

I received a text from NHS Corona virus service today to say I am to stay indoors for 12 weeks, so promptly showed it to my manager and got sent home. Feel so guilty as I'm in social care so front line and very much needed at the moment.

I am really nervous because I've had a sore throat on & off, an intermittent dry cough, got really hot last night for a little while (temperature is normal, I think because it's only a little cheap thermometer) & now have abdominal pain. I was calm until reading that my medication makes me very high risk & then the pain along with the reports that gastro issues & abdominal pain are early signs of it. Hopefully it is just because I've eaten crap today & had more coffee than I would normally.
