I tried to post this in the Coronavirus section but it doesn't allow you to post images in there - I will ask for it to be moved once posted.

I am not a reader of the DM, however after reading about how certain corners of the media are whipping up a frenzy and encouraging a culture of fear about Coronavirus, I paid a visit to their website this morning.

Just what the hell are they trying to achieve and how are they getting away with this. Never mind the fact that their entire homepage format looks like an extract from a "my first website" manual (just masses and masses of text and pictures crammed into a small space which is obviously to trigger certain sensories in the reader) - but the headline?? Emboldened in white against a black background, font size 50 for extra effect.

"UK DEATHS WILL HAPPEN"

Of course they will bloody happen, why would we be so privileged to not have any deaths, as with any health epidemic (and given thousands die from the flu and we keep getting told that it's worse than the flu). The fact that there will be deaths is not new information , so why the fuck are they publishing such a ridiculous story as their main headline?

If you are overly anxious about Coronavirus, please tell me you are not reading this tripe to get your information?? If so, why would you do that to your mental health?

I do not read the DM and I agree with the sensationalist nature not really helping anyone ....

But it is true. If the virus becomes widespread, in all likelihood someone you know will not make it out the other side of this.
The steps you take (isolating properly when it's your turn etc) could save lives.

diddl · 04/03/2020 11:59

Well it might not be true, although sadly it more likely is.

Are there figures anywhere for people that have recovered (or is it too early yet?)

NotJustACigar · 04/03/2020 12:01

I don't usually read the DM but have been going on and taking a look at the top comments on the coronavirus stories. They're mostly people saying the DM is fearmongering, it's like the flu, etc. Why is it that pretty much the one time the DM headlines are true is the one time their readers decide not to believe them 🙄???? It beggars belief.

People need to accept that it's true and start washing their hands more thoroughly and more frequently, sneezing into tissues, stop shaking hands, etc and doing what they can to limit the spread. If people just ignore it or dismiss it and don't do these things we have absolutely no chance at containment.

squashyhat · 04/03/2020 12:04

The point that the OP is making is that yes, it will be true - so why is the DM making a scaremongering headline out of it? My MIL who is a DM reader and their main demographic is going into overdrive panic. Headlines like this aren't helping. Shit 'journalism'.

picklebarrelfalls · 04/03/2020 12:12

My fail reading in laws are still denying everything about CV and aren't bothered in the slightest 🤷🏽‍♀️

Tootletum · 04/03/2020 12:18

I have reported another publication to IPSO for completely inaccurate scaremongering on CV. Google it the form is really quick to fill in.

HasaDigaEebowai · 04/03/2020 13:00

This isn't completely inaccurate scaremongering though Confused

poorbuthappy · 04/03/2020 13:01

Probably their first accurate headline in a while....
