I tried to post this in the Coronavirus section but it doesn't allow you to post images in there - I will ask for it to be moved once posted.

I am not a reader of the DM, however after reading about how certain corners of the media are whipping up a frenzy and encouraging a culture of fear about Coronavirus, I paid a visit to their website this morning.

Just what the hell are they trying to achieve and how are they getting away with this. Never mind the fact that their entire homepage format looks like an extract from a "my first website" manual (just masses and masses of text and pictures crammed into a small space which is obviously to trigger certain sensories in the reader) - but the headline?? Emboldened in white against a black background, font size 50 for extra effect.

"UK DEATHS WILL HAPPEN"

Of course they will bloody happen, why would we be so privileged to not have any deaths, as with any health epidemic (and given thousands die from the flu and we keep getting told that it's worse than the flu). The fact that there will be deaths is not new information , so why the fuck are they publishing such a ridiculous story as their main headline?

If you are overly anxious about Coronavirus, please tell me you are not reading this tripe to get your information?? If so, why would you do that to your mental health?

Par for the course for them I'm afraid. I doubt it will be the worst offence in their daily tripe newspaper today.

HasaDigaEebowai · 04/03/2020 10:53

I don't read it but it's the biggest story in the world at the moment. Are you expecting it not to be a headline?

WaitrosesCheapestVodka · 04/03/2020 10:54

That's the DM, the news with a drooling leer.

Namechanger20183110 · 04/03/2020 10:54

@hasa of course. But is it news to you that there will be deaths from it in this country?

OP posts:
Worriedmom2020 · 04/03/2020 10:54

Well it is true...

Fairyliz · 04/03/2020 10:55

Do you work for the DM? We all know about it now. I find it better to ignore bad behaviour like with toddlers and the fewer clicks they get the less likely they are to post more articles

puds11 · 04/03/2020 10:56

Hasn’t it already caused death in England?

WinterCat · 04/03/2020 10:56

It’s true and it’s a paper that relies on sensational headlines so YABU to expect anything else.

LEELULUMPKIN · 04/03/2020 10:57

For once they have a headline that is actually true. That is shocking, not the story.

Rosehip10 · 04/03/2020 10:58

People who read the Daily Mail are reactionary idiots with a usually a healthy dose of racist views chucked in for good measure.

Namechanger20183110 · 04/03/2020 10:59

@Worriedmom2020 it's true - I said that in my OP. But why run with it as a headline NOW, when we are many days into the containment phase and well into the virus being here. It does nothing but stir up panic for anybody that visits their website. How can people not question their agenda?

OP posts:
PolloDePrimavera · 04/03/2020 10:59

In fairness, the BBC are all over it too. This was on breakfast news this morning and the BBC had a special coronavirus programme last night.

MaccaPacca81 · 04/03/2020 11:00

Apart from the fact that the DM is not fit to use as loo roll, headlines like that sell papers and generate web traffic.

drina27 · 04/03/2020 11:02

That wretched rag are just ramping up the shock factor which is their default position. Body swerving is the answer.

Ignore.

HasaDigaEebowai · 04/03/2020 11:02

@hasa of course. But is it news to you that there will be deaths from it in this country?

Not at all, I'm following it very closely. But there was a massive government announcement yesterday which changed the picture and set out the plans for the coming weeks/months. The WHO also revised the official death rate to 3.4%. That is news.

drina27 · 04/03/2020 11:02

is just

Cinammoncake · 04/03/2020 11:02

DM loves to tell people they're going to die, that and older women bashing are its two favourite things

drina27 · 04/03/2020 11:03

The BBC is not what it once was. Hmmm

icannotremember · 04/03/2020 11:07

It might motivate people who are currently scoffing at the idea of there being any risk to follow advice and wash their hands, I suppose.

potter5 · 04/03/2020 11:24

Even if true, why scare the nation with such sensationalism. People are scared already, much too much hysteria going on.

HairyFloppins · 04/03/2020 11:28

The DM have always loved whipping people up into a frenzy. They had a map of Australia yesterday, Australia was completely red with just a huge skull and crossbones in the middle. No wonder they all went into the shops and panicked.

onalongsabbatical · 04/03/2020 11:31

Where have you been OP this is standard Daily Mail approach and has been for the 124 years of its existence?

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 04/03/2020 11:35

It’s ridiculous - of course a small percentage of people who contract it will die. Same as any other disease or same as say, getting hit by a car.

I’ve had a friend who suffers with anxiety in tears this morning as she’s so worried about corona and her dd is going on a school trip - she wanted to stop her going! People are losing all reason and it’s because of tripe like this.

Wehttam · 04/03/2020 11:44

I consider most news outlets and check up how the reporting to the masses is done. Whilst that is a very alarming headline, unfortunately it does have a ring of truth to it, somewhat exaggerated as it’s the DM. The good thing is hopefully it will wake up the ‘its Only flu’ Brigade and make them realise the true scope of said impending situation.

Could it have been done with more tact? Of course. But many of their readers don’t always grasp tact and often have limited skills to read between the lines. Sometimes you have to yell to be heard.

noblegiraffe · 04/03/2020 11:58

I just saw another story on there talking of ‘warnings of food riots’.

I suspect that the people warning of food riots are the DM hoping to trigger food riots and then sell more papers off the back of photos of people fighting over a tin of beans.
