How do I not breath it in?

Lotuscup563 · 03/03/2020 08:00

We are already taking measures at home of anyone who walks in touches nothing and washes their hands, plus I’m doing extra things like removing clothes and getting into pjs.

Any deliveries being bought in are opened outside then wiped down etc etc. So I’m doing what I can.

I’m going London at the end of the month, I’ll be one of those that will be wearing disposable Gloves, so I’m not concerned about transferring the virus from my hands to myself, but I’m worried about breathing it in.

Apparently the masks don’t work? Would a scarf over my face work or something-

How can I avoid breathing it in, I don’t want to not go, I’ve been waiting years and years and years to go, it’s almost pathetic.

Please advice me.

I live in London

Get a grip.

Namechangexyz1 · 03/03/2020 08:01

No one I know is doing any of those things.

GaaaaarlicBread · 03/03/2020 08:03

Sounds a bit OTT Op, if you’re going to catch it you will. Otherwise if we could avoid all viruses nobody would ever get poorly . I work for the NHS and currently have people in the hospital with it but I’m not walking round the office with gloves and a scarf round my face at all times at work. Do you have health anxiety?

GaaaaarlicBread · 03/03/2020 08:04

You probably breathe in a whole lot worse on a daily basis in busy environments and touch worse without even realising before the virus came out

Splitsunrise · 03/03/2020 08:04

Are you particularly vulnerable to catching it, or is someone in your family? Otherwise why are you so paranoid?

And no, a scarf wrapped round your face will not help...

unluckyagain · 03/03/2020 08:05

I live and work in London. Life is going on as normal. A city of over 9 million people. Just go.

carlyclock · 03/03/2020 08:05

Relax a little?

Opening deliveries outside and wiping them is a bit extreme.

I was in London last week, everybody carrying on as normal. There has been one case there or something hasn't there? It's no bigger risk than where you are no I don't suppose.

BadCatDirtyCat · 03/03/2020 08:06

I understood that the masks do work, but only to a limited extent (once they're saturated with moisture they stop working).

Tbh though I think you have to balance out being careful with accepting a certain level of risk. I travel on the tube every day, I'm pregnant and my partner is immunosuppressed.. it's a risk but there's not much I can do - I have to go to work (I am religiously washing my hands).

Tbh if I was you and I could afford it is avoid the most packed public transport and walk/take taxis where you can.. the tube/buses is the biggest risk imo.

You’re overreacting. The official advice doesn’t say to do any of the things you’re doing. Wash hands regularly. Don’t touch your face. That’s it.

FenellaMaxwell · 03/03/2020 08:14

You know if you touch the virus with gloves and touch your face you would still pass it on? And the virus isn’t airborne, it’s droplet borne so you aren’t just going to breathe it in.

You sound very irrational about all this - do you suffer from anxiety?

Lotuscup563 · 03/03/2020 08:16

Sorry, I have breathing problems already and a simple cold can hospitalise me, and recently done so in January. It’s not easy being in hospital and it puts my family under pressure financially when I can’t work and then my husband is off to look after the children so not working too. We don’t have any childcare support.

I don’t want to be hospitalised so doing all I can, I’m not over reacting, a simple cold puts me in hospital thank you very much!!

What precautions do you usually take to avoid catching a cold?

Lotuscup563 · 03/03/2020 08:19

Someone in my local hospital 5 minutes from my home has tested positive, so the whole town is doing what it can to be clean...everyone is taking precautions, although I do admit I’m going beyond as I’m just desperate not to end back up in hospital.

If you had said that in your first post then you would have got different responses.

Splitsunrise · 03/03/2020 08:20

In that case I think you should google the official guidance rather than ask people on Mumsnet, then. WHO, NHS website, government guidance....

But yes masks give a few minutes protection and then become saturated with moisture from breathing - really not worth it unless you are getting a proper professionally fitted one (and I don’t know how you to about that). The main thing seems to be washing hands religiously. Hand sanitiser needs to be above 60% alcohol, and even then hand washing is more effective.

Lotuscup563 · 03/03/2020 08:21

To avoid colds, I take extra drugs throughout winter. We also keep our hands clean and use lots of tissues.

I’ve been on extra drugs all winter.....can I really continue those after already being on them for 4 months? Normally I would stop middle of March.....think I’ll call my doctor today and ask if I can keep taking them.

What drugs help you avoid colds?

gamerwidow · 03/03/2020 08:24

You stay at least 2m away from the nearest person. Hard in most places but impossible in London. As it stands it’s not currently running wild in the community and you’re at more risk from a common cold given how much they affect you. Just use the normal precautions you take as an immune compromised person. Masks stop people with diseases from spreading it as much they do nothing to stop people from catching it.

carlyclock · 03/03/2020 08:24

Extra drugs to avoid a cold?

What kind of cold puts you in hospital?

gamerwidow · 03/03/2020 08:25

think I’ll call my doctor today and ask if I can keep taking them. yes they will be able to give you the best advice for your specific circumstances. Hope they can put your mind at ease.

Lotuscup563 · 03/03/2020 08:27

Am I allowed to list them?

Spelling mistakes coming up,

I take fostair on a double dose, regular dose throughout rest of the year.
Vitamin D
Montelukast
Steroids (really want to stop these and not carry on taking them- normally I take them just for winter to keep my lungs strong)
Antibiotics are on back up and only taken if I get a infection.

given you are vulnerable to illness is it viable for you to walk rather than get the bus or tube? It's a nicer way to see London anyway and would help to minimise your exposure to other people, as would using black cabs

gamerwidow · 03/03/2020 08:27

carlyclock any cold can put you in hospital if you have severe respiratory problems or are immuno-compromised.

Sorry yes I'm being stupid I literally read that as black and white. I realise underlying health conditions exist, just having a mental black this morning really.
