Fingers crossed we all stay safe but the odds are shortening..

I think an “I have the coronavirus AMA” would be handy!

Is it a dry cough or a phelgmy cough?

Wallywobbles · 03/03/2020 05:46

The first case in Wuhan is thought to have been 1/12/19. It wasn't reported to the WHO as an issue until the end of December and the WHO declared it as an issue in the 3rd week of Jan.

Some estimates are that it's being under reported by 50000 cases a day in China. If exposure was similar to Spanish Flu it would mean some 300 million people catch it. Death rate is 2.3-2.6%. So potentially these are large numbers. These are reported numbers from the Four Corners documentary, which is Australian and was speaking to their experts.

I work in higher education and have kids in 2 other schools in France. I'm currently getting a minimum of 5 email updates a day.

DH works in research with a massive amount of foreign nationals and they sent an Italian home before he came into contact with anyone and that was last week.

I'm not massively worried but it does seem to be very contagious. I think we as a family are fairly well prepared. And as long as we can get home we will cope.

Bool · 03/03/2020 06:26

My DS went to the UAE 2 weeks ago and stayed in the same bloody hotel as the cyclists - 2 italian cycle staff tested positive. (altho I think they didn’t overlap but who knows). He is home from school with mild fever, sore throat and dry cough. 111 said no test even tho I told them this info and they didn’t even ask me the dates. I oscillate back and forth between ‘this is just too much of a coincidence’ and ‘everything is fine.’

Comenext · 04/03/2020 08:12

It's only a matter of time until this thread is full of Mumsnetters with CV symptoms comparing their experiences.
That's if they are still well enough to type of course.

SirVixofVixHall · 04/03/2020 10:19

Bool I am shocked they won’t test him ! I would call my GP.

Bool · 04/03/2020 22:31

So his fever was low and went very soon (after a day) and his sore throat has gone. Now he has a lingering cough although not as bad as it was. I am oscillating between don’t be ridiculous he is fine and abject panic. They won’t test because UAE not considered a danger zone.

Bool · 04/03/2020 22:32

Ps I called the GP yesterday who was lovely but he was kind of in a well if he has it there is nothing we can do and just keep an eye. I mean he doesn’t have a fever which reassures me and keeps me sane. But yes not the ideal time for him get ill. Bad coincidence

Bool · 04/03/2020 22:33

Oh and nobody else from the trip has any symptoms (he was there with 40 kids and staff) and the school says the cyclists arrived 2 days later. But who knows.

bitheby · 04/03/2020 22:38

I don't have it but I've been glued to the Abels updates on YouTube. They were on the Diamond Princess and have both tested positive for the virus.

Both had pneumonia but both recovering well and are in really high spirits.

Aridane ~ Nah - it will be a ‘I have health anxiety and / or a cold and think I have coronavirus - ask me anything’

I was jut thinking that Grin

A lot of the 'AMAs' are questionable at the bet of times. It won't be long before it's fully apparent CV 'sufferers' Wink

PickleBottomNo3sMum · 04/03/2020 23:48

I’ve just heard they’ve discovered there are two strains! In early Oct we had a nasty virus. I don’t remember feeling that bad but know I had an awful cough. However DD was really struggling to breathe and spent the eve in A&E, she had a nebuliser and was given an asthma pump. Surprisingly, there were a few other kids there were having the same treatment. Probably just a coincidence though as I don’t think the whole family had it so either it wasn’t that contagious or they’d already had it.

DamsonDress · 05/03/2020 07:47

At least 5 children at DD'S school who had been on ski trip have since developed symptoms so have been tested. All negative. Concerning for them but I think it's a reassuring reminder that sore throats and coughs aren't uncommon and not absolutely a sign of coronavirus.

Not suggesting we assume any symptoms are not coronavirus and go roaming the country licking people's faces or anything like that but I'll follow the Public Health's advice and not panic too much.

bitheby · 05/03/2020 13:48

It wasn't circulating in early October. Unless you live in Wuhan and even then you would probably have been patient zero and over-friendly with a bat.

Lovemusic33 · 05/03/2020 15:54

It does make me wonder how many people have or have had It without really knowing, thinking it’s not worth seeing a gp or being told by gp not to worry “it’s just a cold”. I have been unwell on and off for over a week, pretty sure it’s a cold but how would I know? Today I feel pretty rough, have a slight dry cough and slight temp but feeling lethargic and just unwell, if I was to call 111 what would they advise? Probably just to stay at home and drink plenty of water? I haven’t had any known contact with anyone infected but how would I know? I go to the gym every day, lots of people that go there ski in the winter, I don’t know if anyone has been to Italy. We go shopping and probably come into contact with things 100’s of people have touched, share lifts, share toilets, go grab a coffee in Costa where 100’s have passed through, so how are people to know if they have been in contact with it?

Bunnyfuller · 05/03/2020 17:45

Sore throats aren’t one of the symptoms.

To those who think they’ve had it (albeit mildly) then I guess you did! Like all viruses I think it’s going to do the rounds now regardless. Not good for those at more risk, but the horse bolted long ago, the viruses can hang around on things for up to 72 hours.

@WorraLiberty I agree! We need someone(S) who are confirmed to have had it do a full timeline of their illness ‘felt fine when I got home from work, started feeling really exhausted during the evening, had an early night....’. I know it won’t be identical for everyone but it’s a starter for 10. Bearing in mind the number of cases with unknown transmission, we can’t say for sure when/were the next infections will be.

cathyandclare · 06/03/2020 08:31

I think a sore throat has been reported as an early symptom for many. I read that only 1 in 20 has a runny nose- but this guy ( sorry DM link) says it was like a snuffle in the early stages.

To all those saying they might of had CV in December - it is not possible! The first cases in China that came to light in late December were all linked to the wet market where it is thought to have jumped species. Unless you were in that particular part of China in December you definitely didn't have it.

m0therofdragons · 06/03/2020 23:43

@Albatross123 there's some belief that China hid initial cases and it could have been as early as November or even late October.

Albatross123 · 07/03/2020 08:00

@dragons Maybe there were a few cases but not enough to cause all these people in the UK to have already had it. I think there has been a nasty virus doing the rounds here but it is not COVID-19 as we would have seen a huge spike in hospital admissions for pneumonia as is the case in other countries. It would not have gone unnoticed.

Aridane · 07/03/2020 14:32

I'm sure my ds had it in December- he was hospitalised and on oxygen with high temperature, cough and viral wheeze along with just about every other child on the ward, no runny nose or cold though and too young to tell me if he ached or had other symptoms

Don’t be so ridiculous

MinkowskisButterfly · 07/03/2020 15:21

Apprently there are self isolating cases locally, one of my sisters works for a supermarket and they have done a home delivery to them. They had to knock and just leave the shopping.

Wonderland18 · 07/03/2020 20:21

If you read the link posted by cathyandclare you’ll see the first British man with it in Wuhan caught it in November not December.
